What, How, Why: Lev Raphael

Lev RaphaelWHAT?

Memoir, mystery, suspense, literary novels, short story collections, a mystery series, vampire fiction, psychology, self-help, biography, belles-lettres, a writer’s guide, a teacher’s guide.

WHY?

So many reasons! I fell in love with story-telling in elementary school. I fell in love with our local library in those same years. I fell in love with imaginary and real worlds that seemedimaginary because they weren’t my own. I fell in love with moving effortlessly from genre to genre in...

Dream Logic and Un chien Andalou

“The night I met Gavin Schirrick, Salvador Dali had already put me in a dark mood. Itwas fall, 1978. Un Chien Andalouwas playing at Cleveland State’s Art Theater, and since I’d heard it was inspired by dream logic, I hoped to get some insight into my own crazy dreams. You would have loved the absurdity of the film, but, if there was any meaning to Dali’s dream world, I didn’t get it.” ~ Angelica, from my forthcoming novel,In the Context of Love.Preorder June 16th!

What, How, Why: Jeanne Hewell-Chambers

nancyjeanne I stitch Nancy’s drawings to give her – this wise woman that society is so quick to turn away from – a voice. – JHC

JEANNE HEWELL-CHAMBERS

WHAT?

Writing :: I write books, stage plays, one-and-two women performances, journals, and heaps of old-fashioned notes and letters.

Stitching :: I stitch the marks made by my developmentally-disabled sister-in-law, Nancy. Hymns of Cloth, I call them.

Performing :: I perform . . . well, shoot. Being a woman who was raised in The South, I could tell you...

What, How, Why: Debbie Ritter

DebbieRitterWHAT?

I am an artist who specializes in creating people and characters of all kinds from a unique combination of wood, wire, clay, and paint.

WHY?

Since I enjoy reading and also people watching, I decided the best way to enjoy my unique art form was to combine what I like to do and use it in my art as inspiration. I love what I do and I hope it shows!

HOW?

I take a basic wooden clothespin and add wire, then I use special clay to shape the character’s features. After that, I use my artist...

The Futon and The Dude

Futons have come a long way in twenty years, since my son had one. His bedroom was small; it had beena good fit, but the frame had so many loose parts it was impossible to keep the contraption in one piece, and the mattress felt as if it had beenpacked with sand. I don’t know how he slept in it all those years. It may be one of the reasons his back bothers him as an adult.

I wanted a futonfor a newly remodeled room. Early onemorning, I visitedMattress & Futon Geeks. The new frames are easy to...

The end would come too soon

“The people of Nopiming were snug and sleepy inside their furnaced homes, feet propped up, ready to watch the weather report on the eleven o’clock news, their children tucked safely in bed. The two of us were driving toward something we couldn’t see. The snow in the yards shone as if coated with glass, the bare branches of the trees were thick fingers of ice. It was the beginning of everything. The end would come too soon.

I wanted to take your hand and put it back between my legs, where i...

Heuer, Lost and Found: the Book Trailer

I love when I stumble across a book trailerthat actually compels me to make a purchase. Fellow writer and Twitter pal,A. B. Funkhauser, made a terrific trailer for her debut book, Heuer Lost and Found, and she did it all by herself. I’m so impressed. She had so much fun making one that she went ahead and made two more, so I’m tripleimpressed.

Her trailer isunder a minute, which I think is the way to go. I find watching a three minute long book trailer about as thrilling as reading a prologue....

Book Promotion for Anxious Authors

anxious authorAuthor Josh Isard got a good laugh at AWP when he described the conference attendees as “a whole bunch of people collectively experiencing social anxiety.” We writers are introverts who sometimes have to be dragged out of the house to socialize. Selling our own books and ourselves as writers is something we find difficult. So what is an author to do?

Finding the answer was my goal at the AWP conference this year, because my debut novel, In the Context of Love, will be published in September.

What, Why, How: Jeff Vande Zande

I’m starting a new series to my blog to feature fiction writers, poets, artists and musicians, by asking three basic questions when it comes to creativity: What, Why and How. What do you do? What compels you? And lastly, how do you do it… do you have a daily routine, or only on the weekends? Enjoy this entry from a fellow Michigander:

JEFF VANDE ZANDE
