Playlist for In the Context of Love
Music plays a minor role in my novel. The storybegins in the nineties, then travels back to the mid-seventies before catching back up to the nineties again, andpop culture referenceshelp set the tone. Just for fun,I made a playlistof the songs that make an appearance in the novel. Afew of them shouldbe familiar to any generation. If not, that’s okay.Maybe you can’t remember, or you never heard “Boogie Oogie Oogie,” but I think the title alone captures the disco era.

When Opportunity Intersects with Dreams
“Outer-space alternative country” musician Jim White wrote an essay titled “Superwhite”about howstumblingacross David Byrne’s music enlightened him when he was a struggling musician, and then years later, how Byrne discovered White and his music…which led to arecord deal with Byrne’s Luaka Bop label. Hisstory of bizarre twists was awarded a2014 Pushcart Prize.

What, Why, How: Kelly Fordon
WHAT?
HOW?I write fiction, poetry, book reviews and nonfiction.
Bird by Bird as Anne LaMott says. When I am writing, I just keep forging ahead until I have something I like. In the case of “Garden for the Blind” for years I thought I was writing eleven separate stories about people who had nothing to do with one another, but then one day it occurred to me that they were really the same people with different names. That was a weird moment! I put the stories together and they formed a novel-...

What, Why, How: Denise Sedman
“I’m a writer.” Those words didn’t come easy to me. Friends would ask what I did for a living and I’d hem and haw and never give a clear answer. I was embarrassed to say I was a writer because I truly didn’t believe it myself. I heard my mother’s nagging words clearly state that I was a simpleton with a limited vocabulary. I took it as a challenge and bought a dictionary.
My pursuit of stringing words together became a passion and a safe way to express my emotions. Unlike a journal, I’d...

What, Why, How: Cynthia Kraack
Author and writer. I’ve written five novels, some speculative fiction and one literary. Before and during my publishing years, I’ve also been a freelance writer in the interactive niche, designing business simulation games and creating content for consumer websites.
WHY?
I’ve been a corporate professional because that was easy. I sing because music is like air. I have come to understand I write because life is so unsatisfying if I don’t. It wasn’t an easy lesson to learn.
In a footlocke...
