What to See in Old Town Gdansk

Gdansk does not have a or main square, as most other Polish towns. Instead the town has a wide pedestrian-only street, Dlugi Targ. Dlugi Targ dates back to the Middle Ages, and has been the center of trade and important decisions in Gdansk. Much of Old Town Gdansk was destroyed during WWII, but buildings are exact reconstructions of the original houses in late Gothic style and baroque. Any building that is brick (or partial brick, since they saved what they could) is likely original; building...

Complex Summer Reads: Anthem Book Review

seven summer reads

Looking for a more complex summer read?

The criteria Anthem Book Review used to choose Seven Summer Books for Women is different than most summer reads. Reviewer Francine Meija doesn’t recommend fluffy romance books. She writers:

I want hard, complex characters. Complexity is fine by me. I keep a minimum of 3 books with me, a fun read, a ‘my choice deep read,’ and a book I am usually reading for a review. Don’t limit yourself to only romance novels during the summer months, nor limit to only...

The Art of Googly Eyebombing

Street art:

Eyebombing is “Humanizing the world, one googly eye at a time.” It’s the art of sticking googly eyes onto an inanimate object in a public setting in a way that creates the appearance of a living creature.

A boost in popularity took place when two Danish eyebombers revitalized this apparently lost form of street art. They say:

What makes Eyebombing different from traditional types of street art like tagging, sticking, and stencils is the purpose. The above forms are largely driven...

Take Control of Your Free Time

How to Gain Control of your Free Time by Laura Vanderkam is possibly one of the most useful Ted Talks I’ve watched in a while. If you can’t spare the 12 minutes it takes to watch it, here are the facts:

Your Time:

You have 168 hours a week to spend. That’s a fact. Subtract how many hours a week you work, sleep, and spend on essential chores. What you have left is “free” time. This is time you can do whatever you want with. How are you using it?

Prioritize:

So how do you figure out what to do...

The Amsterdam Getaway That Almost Wasn’t

Hilton AmsterdamI nearly missed my flight to Amsterdam for a long weekend getaway with my husband, who was working in Poland. He planned to meet me at the Amsterdam airport on Friday. I was terribly mixed up, thinking I would fly out from Detroit on Friday evening and arrive Friday morning; for some idiotic reason, I thought the US was 8 hours ahead of Amsterdam when actually it’s only six hours, and we are are behind in time, not ahead. And because my ticket said I arrived Friday, I assumed I left on the sa...

What, Why, How: Patricia Gapske

What:

I’m an artist who loves to draw, take photographs and create sculptures, and within each of those is a subcategory of different materials and processes that I use. I used to think that I needed to focus all of my energy on one specific medium but that never worked for me. I felt like I was holding my creativeness captive for others’ ideals and not my own. I took an art class in high school then eventually I took a beginning drawing class in college, and I was hooked. I graduated with...

What, Why, How: Dennis K. Hausker

Dennis K. Hausker, epic fantasy writerWhat: I’m currently a fiction writer who started writing after I retired. My favorite genre to write is what I like to read, epic fantasy. That being said, my favorite writer was Michael Crichton. His ability to grab you with his words and keep you spellbound to the end still dazzles me. I’m also a licensed financial consultant part-time. I have two trilogies on the market, a number of standalone novels, two anthologies and I’m a contributing author in four other anthologies. My latest novel...

Listen To Your Mother Metro Detroit Recap

Listen To Your Mother Live Storytelling ShowOn April 30th, 2017, I had the honor of sharing the stage with a dozen other brave and honest women at Saint Andrews Hall in Detroit for the Grand Finale Season of Listen To Your Mothera national, live storytelling event. Unfortunately the budget didn’t allow for the “massive endeavor requiring thousands of woman-hours” for video, but we have pictures… and stories. The stories will live on.

You may tell a tale that takes up residence in someone’s soul, becomes their blood and self and purpo...

Handsewn Treasures

My mother loved to sew

Momwas a saver

Thelma was sentimental. She’dsaved so many of my favorite toys, books, artwork, cards, and dolls… even a confirmation dress and twoprom gowns, in her basement and bedroom closets. When she passed away in 2013, I brought the boxes back to my houseand tucked them away in a closet, intending to go through them later.

Barbie and Midge doll caseRecentlyI pulledout theBarbie suitcase that heldBarbie and Midge and all the wonderful tiny treasures (roller skates, purses, phonograph, gloves, hat...

Crossing the Street, a new novel by Molly D. Campbell

Crossing the Street by Molly D. Campbell My first impression of Molly Campbell, who I met on Twitter through mutual friends was “Damn, this broad isfunny.” Over the years, I’ve discovered we’re both authors, artists, Ohioans, and proud grandmothers. Molly has a brand new novel out, her third, and I’m willing to bet it’s filled with humor, as well as heart. Jamie Ford, New York Times bestselling author of Hotel at the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, says about Molly’s book,Hilarious and full of heartwarming, familial honesty,...
