What, Why, How: Shireen Jeejeebhoy

I write books. My brain injury made it possible because it took away my writing ability, my ability to see and write short stories. My writing returned after relearning, but it wasn’t the same at all as before my injury. At first, I could write only non-fiction, and so I started a political blog to give my angst an outlet. Then in 2009, after months of a story building up inside me, National Novel Writing Month kicked those fictional-story-producing neurons back into life. I wrote my fi...

Live Mannequin Night at Rochester Posed
I made the mistake of talking Clementine with me downtown to see Rochester Posed, where movie and TV characters are brought to life with live mannequins in store fronts. There were so many people, despite a light rain, that I feared she might get trampled by the oohing and ahhing crowd. I had to take her home and return, but least all the walking made my Fitbit happy.
This is the fifth year for downtown Rochester’s Posed event, and it’s clear that many stores go all out in cr...

What, Why, How: Marci Diel

For 21 years, I’ve been “Head of Everything” for MarciDiehl.com as a multi-media writer, editor and producer/consultant for the web, print, video, and social media. Before that, I married during college and had four sons in 8 years. I was a (mostly) stay-at-home mom, writing freelance for national, regional and local magazines — Golf Digest, Golf Magazine, Success Magazine, SCORE (Canada), Jacksonville Today — on lifestyle, golf, travel, humor, and tourism attractions, when I wasn’t...

Taken too soon
Earlier this year I discovered the infant section at Mount Avon Cemetery. Eleven babies in all. They were hard to find because the stones were nearly completely grown over. I imagine the parents have moved out of town and are no longer able to tend to their sites, but they keep their little ones forever in their hearts.
I spent a couple hours cleaning them up.

Love and loss on Labor Day, 2017
Today I tidied the gravesites of Jacob Vaness Young, his wife Leita and their two children, swapping out summer flowers for fall stuff. I took Clementine with me for the first time since late spring, when a cranky cop told me “No pets allowed in the cemetery” In other words, vacate and don’t come back (this, after several other policemen over the years have chatted amicably with me there, never once mentioning pet weren’t allowed).
After that incident with the pesky police...

Imagining Fictional Characters
A series of fun photographs I took with dolls posed behind the partial figure on my book cover got me thinking about faces on book covers, and what we imagine when we read.
What do you see when you read?Think of your favorite character: What, exactly, do you envision? Can you conjure an actual face? A body?
Peter Mendelsund writes in What We See When We Read:
Even if an author excels at physical description, we are left with shambling concoctions of stray body parts and random detail (author...

What, Why, How: Wendy McCance

I am a freelance writer and social media manager with a 6 year old blog, Searching for the Happiness, which can be found in the Oakland Press online. Working as a freelancer has been an ideal career move for me. I am continuously challenged by getting the opportunity to write about a multitude of subjects. It’s wonderful to have a job where I love what I do and rarely becoming bored because there is always a new project to work on. On any given day, I might write a company blog post, we...

Stinky Incidents: How to de-skunk a dog
Dogs don’t have the best of boundaries when it comes to skunks. You think they’d learn after the first spraying to stay away from the lumbering black animal with the white stripe.
Clementine’s episodeA few nights ago, Clementine was going bananas over something she’d apparently pinned alongside the garage. Hydrangea bushes kept the unknown hidden from my sight, but my doggy sure knew something was there. She barked and lunged in full attack mode. She’s never been so savage, and I hesitated...
