Practical ways to get unstuck in your creativity – Create Out Loud podcast with Jen Louden

I had a fun, rich, deep conversation with Jennifer Louden about the potency of creativity. Jen is a super thoughtful resource for all things creative and I love her podcast. It brings so much substance to the conversation about creativity and creative work.

Here’s the full link to the podcast: https://jenniferlouden.com/create-out-loud-2/episode-38/?fbclid=IwAR3yBU0LhYKCAw6JBbH_XEb_kemQcCezyiSGQiK0_cgy0keOUzzKSQPk5SA

Teaching is a point of access to something that lies beyond the teacher.

Teachers have a unique opportunity to:

Embrace the imaginative
Draw on the wisdom in a room
Define your own voice and vision
Create space for inspired possibilities
Support what naturally wants to unfold
Serve something larger than yourself

Teaching is a point of access to something that lies beyond the teacher. It’s a spiritual and creative path that lasts a lifetime.

For more on the spiritual and creative path of teaching, check out my book, Getting Messy: A guide to taking risks and opening the imagination for teachers, trainers, coaches and mentors.

Teachers say that GETTING MESSY transformed their teaching life, giving them the confidence to explore new terrain. Non-teachers say it’s useful and inspiring because the deeper principles of teaching and learning are actually principles of life itself.

Learning isn’t about knowing, it’s about not knowing.

We may think learning is about knowing, but it’s actually about not knowing.

We have to NOT KNOW in order to learn.

And when we admit we don’t know, we open space for a greater wisdom to come through.

What does ‘not knowing’ look like?

1. Be vulnerable – set aside the desire to control.
2. Share what is authentically true, no matter how it’s received.
3. Don’t try to create certain outcomes.
4. Trust the process to show you the next step.
5. Get out of the way of the larger intelligence that’s present.

We humans aren’t supposed to know everything. We’re designed to learn.

When we teach, counsel, or coach, greater wisdom is present.

When we teach, counsel, or coach, there is a greater space of wisdom that’s present.

I call it Third Space.

Third Space is a place of expanded knowing, creative breakthroughs and intuitive wisdom.

Many of us get stuck thinking in black and white categories: “Should I do A or should I do B?”

But there’s another space of possibility that holds surprising answers we would never have come up with on our own.

There’s a whole other reality.

A metaphor gives us an experience.

In my coaching work, I introduce my clients to an ancient, innate, felt sense way of knowing that allows them to enter a potent field of universal intelligence that would otherwise be inaccessible.

It is our capacity for METAPHOR.

Metaphor is an ancient way of knowing that allows us to understand our world through the ‘sensory feel’ of form, shape, direction, size, weight, texture, and movement.

An image gives you something to look at and analyze. A metaphor gives you an experience.

Check out my free PDF, “8 Steps for Inspired Breakthroughs with the Power of Metaphor” on my homepage: https://www.kimhermanson.com

Where can you create a space of possibility?

A hundred years ago, no one thought we humans would ever walk on the moon.

But once it happened, a brand new arena of space exploration opened.

In the field of sports, athletes break records that seem impossible to break. They set a new bar for the athletes that come after them.

In any field of endeavor, a few trailblazers open doors for others to follow in their footsteps.

Where else can we create those spaces of possibility?

“Beauty is the depth at which we see something.”

I once heard someone say, “Beauty is the depth at which we see something.”

What does that statement mean for you?

Does it have any relevance for teaching, leading a group, or working with a client?

What does it mean to see something at a “deeper” level?

I’ve always felt it meant seeing with the heart—seeing by employing our ability to feel.

I would love to hear your thoughts.

“The true work of the mind is to reconnect us with that which would otherwise be out of reach.”

“The true work of the mind is to reconnect us with that which would otherwise be out of reach.” ~ Parker Palmer

In other words, our knowledge and expertise are not meant to lead us to an END POINT.

They’re meant to be CATALYSTS for more learning.

Otherwise we’re simply holding inert ideas.

We’re built to serve something greater than ourselves.

Jacob Needleman said that we’re built to serve something greater than ourselves.

For me, teaching has given me that sense of serving something greater than myself.

Stepping into a new teaching situation, I have no idea what challenges (or gifts) lie before me. But I’m ready for an adventure.

Teaching is the ultimate MEETING OF LIFE.

When we teach, we meet life.

Jacob Needleman said that a sense of meaning is more important than anything else in life.

He said: “We’re built to serve something greater than ourselves.”

For me, teaching has given me that sense of meaning—that sense of serving something greater than myself.

Teaching is deep and rich…it’s the ultimate MEETING OF LIFE.

Stepping into a new teaching situation, I have no idea what challenges (or gifts) lie before me.

I’m ready for an adventure.
