Meu pequeno Portugal / Small Portugal of mine

Meu pequeno Portugal,
que para mim se fez tão grande.
Bem sabes não me estar no sangue
abandonar a terra natal.

Mas as gentes, e seus sorrisos,
e seus pensamentos, e suas palavras,
me deixam com vontade de abrir asas,
trepar montanhas, cruzar rios.

Para Norte, até Viana,
irei para falar de poemas
e do que me deste a escrever.

Para Sul, ao Guadiana,
com a desculpa dos fonemas,
acabarei por te conhecer.

Small Portugal of mine,
so big were you made to me.
You know my blood is free
of the will to leave my town.

But the peoples, and their smiles,
and their thoughts, and their words,
make me want to open my wings,
jump mountains, cross rivers.

To North, till Viana is reached,
I'll go speaking of poems
and of what you made mine to write.

To South, to the Guadiana,
through the excuse of phonemes,
I'll end up knowing you.
