What if humans were livestock?

In this dark romance novel featuring a minotaur, Pele decides to travel to the lands connected to her roots, the lands where her father grew up. However, what promised to be a journey of self-discovery turns into a kidnapping by enormous, hairy beasts.

Minotaurs of all colors and sizes have kidnapped several humans to keep as livestock and classify them according to the Taur's wishes. They can be branded as Grîst (meat), Sark (breeding or food), K'onn (concubines), or Mát (king/queen mate).

Pele has been chosen by Taur as his Mát for the breeding season.

The minotaurs know they must not contradict the king's decisions, but some still dare to challenge him for his new mate, and they fight to the death. The king demonstrates his authority and strength with every test, murder, and word, but two entities still dare to defy him: one who desires Pele and one who wants to rule as the new Taur.

Characters:
Nothing particularly noteworthy. None of the characters have a striking personality or any real development. Pele is the protagonist, used repeatedly by her king for sex, uniting them in mind, soul, and body. What she feels, he feels, and vice versa. She is a weak human, yet she insists on defying the Taur's desires, though she ultimately gives in to each sexual encounter.

Taur is a "slut," but he is above everyone else. What he says is law. If he doesn't object to a rape, no one interferes; if he's in favor of kidnappings, everyone is; if he's in favor of a public orgy with his partner as the center of attention, everyone is in favor. He is a two-meter-tall minotaur filled with obsession, possessiveness, and territoriality. He is not romantic, he is not sweet, and he is not a "nice guy."

The plot is quite simple; it all revolves around sex and how orgasm is what's needed to keep Pele alive (yes, really). It's an easy and quick read, but it's not for minors. Given the nature of bull society, sexual humiliation, public rape, massacres, dubious consent, and other minotaurs getting aroused by watching your partner have sex are all normalized.

I don't know exactly what to think of what I read. It's not the first time I've read a story like this, with monsters or humans, but it felt empty. There are two more books by the author that I'd like to read (Cruel Devotion and Alpha's Good Girl) before deciding whether to give up or continue with this side of Monster Romance.

Long live the MRs, but the Dark MRs... I don't know, I still have to see.

Obvio, especialmente cuando se tocan temas como las pérdidas familiares en la niñez, los desamores en la adolescencia y la falta de autoestima y amor propio en la adultez.

El libro está dividido en tres partes narradas solo desde su punto de vista. Primero, conocemos a una Emily niña que experimenta el fin de la naturaleza: la muerte. No solo pierde a sus familiares cercanos, también a sus mascotas. Después, seguimos con su adolescencia, el momento más vulnerable de una persona. A propósito o sin querer, vemos lo fácil que es para un adulto manipular a una adolescente que tiene miedo de estar sola.

Emily tiene padres que la aman, no está realmente sola, pero ¿qué pasa cuando nuestra idea de vida es casarnos con la persona indicada y tener una familia? ¿Qué pasa cuando siempre fuiste el objeto de burlas de tus compañeros y encontras un refugio en las palabras de extraños en Internet y grupos que comparten tus mismos gustos?

En el transcurso, también vemos la triste realidad de conseguir trabajo cuando no se trata de lo que te gusta y te motiva. Qué fácil es pasar una entrevista y ser aceptado, pero qué difícil es romperte en pedazos, haciendo algo que no te hace feliz, solo para sobrevivir como se espera en la sociedad, para cumplir con la autoexigencia de la sociedad del cansancio.

Se espera de nosotros que seamos autoexigentes, obedientes y prácticos en muchas tareas a la vez, pero dejamos de lado nuestra felicidad, nuestra salud física y mental, y los vínculos emocionales se deshacen por la poca calidad y tiempo que le damos. ¿Cómo seremos capaces de sostener el amor, la unión y nuestro deseo de tener una familia, si ni siquiera tenemos tiempo de organizar nuestros pensamientos?

Emily dio mucho de sí misma por un montón de parejas que no resultaron, que no valieron la pena para ella, porque cada chico tenía otra visión de vida. Ella se ilusionó muy fácil y por miedo a perder sus únicas oportunidades, le costó aprender a soltar, pero lo hizo.
Emily, después de tanto llorar, se dio cuenta de que la vida no termina cuando no tenes pareja.

Si bien el libro nos dice que son vivencias partes del proceso para fortalecerse como mujer, también son cosas que pasan los hombres y que les duele; muchos de ellos también tienen el mismo objetivo de vida, sufren acoso escolar por ser gordos o menos masculinos y también son pisados por mujeres que solo los usan. Y, a mí parecer, este libro es una reflexión para todas las personas, hombres o mujeres, que todavía están buscándose a sí mismas y creen que una relación llenará ese vacío.

Creo que este tipo de libros tiene que ser elegido en un momento específico. Personalmente, no conecté con ninguna experiencia, salvo la muerte de las mascotas, porque tuve más suerte o porque no tengo la necesidad de compañerismo, pero me sirvió para entender a las personas que conozco que sí son como Emily: en extremo cariñosas y que esperan mucho de los demás.

Es una lectura corta que sirve para reflexionar y encontrarse con uno mismo si estás pasando por eso. A veces, no somos conscientes de que estamos en una relación tóxica hasta que vemos los mismos gestos o las mismas discusiones en otros, ya sea en conocidos, libros o películas, y algo nos hace clic en la cabeza.
