The recipe for success

Do you know the recipe for success? The 4th century B.C., Greek playwright, Sophocles, did…and he was right!

I’ll explain in my video below.

Remembering that God is Love

This article appears in the Austin American Statesman – August 8, 2015

Witnessing the reactions of those who are opposed to the Supreme Court’s ruling on gay marriage has been very interesting and has certainly sparked a debate on the role of religious beliefs in one’s life. For me, it really comes down to body versus soul and ego versus love. In other words, it comes down to whether or not you believe you are a body with a soul or a soul with a body. The difference being which one is the dominant force in your life? Body or soul?

I teach my clients that all problems are the result of the ego, and a lack of living a life of presence. All conflict occurs when individuals lose sight of their true nature as spiritual beings. We are not men and women, we are not our bodies, we are not our minds or thoughts—we are souls. Your body is mortal and the time it spends in the physical, material realm is brief and transitory. Your soul, however, is eternal and divine.

When you believe the illusion that you are your body and mind, you begin to believe your thoughts are real and your opinions valid and correct. As a result, you become ego-driven. Your thoughts, decisions, and actions become based on the intellectual, emotional, and instinctive wants and desires of your mind and body.

Where the soul is divine love, the ego is fear-based. The fear-based mentality of the ego views its environment and the world as “man versus man”, “me versus you”, and “us versus them.” Hence, the ego-driven individual is selfish, fearful, and focuses chiefly on his or her self-interests and ultimate survival.

An ego-driven individual is usually void of any relative thinking, and typically views life and the world in extremes. Their speech is characterized by fear and often contains absolutes, such as: all, always, everything, every time, never, no one, nothing, etc. To the ego-driven individual, shades of gray do not exist. Their world is black or white, good or bad, us or them. An ego-driven person may say, “All Arabs are terrorists.” “Never trust someone you don’t know.” “Poor people are lazy.” “Take what is yours, otherwise, someone else will.” “You are either for me or against me.”

On the contrary, the soul knows that everything is divine and connected, from insects to whales, and grains of sand to stars in distant galaxies. The soul practices acceptance, sees itself in others, and loves all unconditionally.

I believe it is imperative we make the effort to remember our spiritual nature and gain a sense of spiritual unity. We must remember that while our country consists of many different races and religions, ultimately we are one—we are all Americans.

We must love one another regardless of race, sex, or social class. In harming others, we harm ourselves. In depriving others, we deprive ourselves. We must remember that, at our core we are souls connected by the infinite Spirit. As such, there is not one person on Earth that is more important than any other person.

We must respect one another. The simplest way to do this is to treat others as you would want to be treated. This maxim exists in all the major, world religions. Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Taoism, and Judaism all contain a variance of the golden rule within their teachings.

Another way to remember you are a spiritual being and to live a life in conscious harmony with the infinite Spirit is to be Present—to make the constant effort to live in the eternal Now.

The Present shatters all of the illusions of the ego. The Present reveals the eternal Truth. The Present will remind you that you are ultimately the loving, radiant, divine energy that is God.

When you have fully realized this, and you can no longer deny that your true destiny is to live this eternal Truth every waking moment of your life, the idea of loving one another unconditionally and respecting one another as you respect yourself, will move from your mind into your heart, where the thought will translate into action.

It is not enough to talk about how wonderful the world would be if we all could just love and respect one another—we must take action. We must love unconditionally with all of our heart and soul.

If we can love each other with the same love the Infinite Spirit has for us, a genuine concern and respect for each other and all that exists will naturally occur, and, we will be in unity and conscious harmony with God, who is Love. And we won’t care whether or not gays can or should marry because we will recognize that love, be it between homosexuals or heterosexuals, is simply a gift from God. And no one should be deprived of the expression, acceptance, and recognition of their love for another.

10 Life Lessons I Have Learned

I recently had the honor of being the commencement speaker at the graduation ceremony for the Austin School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Austin, TX.

In my speech, I shared 10 life lessons with the graduates. I wanted to share them with you, too.

10 Life Lessons I Have Learned

1.  Don’t live your life making choices to please others. Do what makes you happy.

2.  When opportunity strikes, take it.

3.  You will never know what is possible if you don’t try.

4.  It takes 15 years to become an overnight success.

5.  Try to be as present to your life as possible. The Now is the only moment that truly exists.

6.  Everything happens for a reason. There are no accidents.

7.  Miracles are happening all around you if you just stop to notice them.

8.  Our souls are God and our spiritual work is to express the God within us. We do this through Love.

9.  Don’t keep your message or your art locked inside you. You must release it to the world. Otherwise, those who are meant to benefit from it will never find it.

10.  Success is 10% talent and 90% hard work. If you can set a goal, create an action plan, believe in yourself, work hard, and have the determination and persistence to meet your goals, then you can achieve anything you desire.

Those are just 10 of the many lessons I have learned throughout the years. I hope you find them beneficial in your personal and spiritual growth.

Please let me know what you think and write a comment below.  I do read and personally respond to all of them. And feel free to share one of your own life lessons!

Peace and blessings,

Sullins

Your Life is Your Work of Art

Life, when lived well, is a work of art. I believe to live well is to be present to your life and to attempt to do everything to the best of your ability. If you do things to the best of your ability and fully experience them, you will not be left wondering whether or not you lived life to the fullest.

When you do something to the best of your ability, with presence, intention, and purpose, you create something beautiful, you create a work of art.

If you are a chef, aim to cook to the best of your ability. If you are a dancer, aim to dance to the best of your ability. If you are a teacher, aim to teach to the best of your ability. Whatever you do, be it an accountant, surgeon, or bricklayer, strive to do it with presence, intention, and purpose. Those in your field will recognize your efforts, your passion, your artistry. Isn’t this one of the ways in which we feel fulfilled? Knowing that we performed to the best of our ability, that we gave it our all?

If you can live each day with presence, intention, and purpose, you will see that each day is more fulfilling and meaningful, and that life becomes easier. It is a conscious choice to live to the best of your ability. Otherwise, you risk going through life on autopilot, going through the motions but not consciously engaged.

Each day is a canvas upon which you can create beautiful works of art if you desire. In this way, we are all artists. What will you create today?

Peace and blessings,

Sullins

Open Your Heart

I recently watched a YouTube video in which an individual stated why he was an atheist. I found it interesting that his argument was based in his intellectual center, his mind, where the ego resides. My experience is that God, the Infinite Spirit, cannot be grasped by the intellect alone. To know the existence of the Infinite Spirit is to experience it emotionally, with your heart and soul, for the mind cannot comprehend what the heart understands.

For example, have you ever been in love? Truly, in love? I’m referring to the type of love that knows no boundaries. The love that, if the world were to fall apart today and you lost every possession you had, it wouldn’t matter. The love that, if you had to, you would sacrifice your life in an instant, no questions asked, for your beloved? When you experience this type of love, you feel it in every cell of your body and your heart feels as if it could explode in the abundant bliss of unconditional love it is experiencing. What if you had to explain this type of love to someone who had no knowledge of its existence?

I don’t believe this type of love can be fully comprehended by intellect alone—it must be experienced. The mere knowledge that it exists is not enough. You must experience it to fully grasp all that it contains; you must open your heart and experience it with your emotional center, where it will be understood.

My teacher used to say, “You can teach a parrot to say E = mc2 but it will never understand it.” The same is true for living in the Now. You can know about the Now intellectually, but to fully understand it, you must experience it.

In the Now, you will observe that your soul is the bridge connecting you with God. As you delve deeper and deeper into the Now, you will understand that your soul is God.

Peace and Blessings,
