Chapter 1

On Bourbon Street, nightfall had brought music and drunken laughter. A block away, Giovanna stalked her prey. She’d followed the man for over an hour, waiting for the opportunity to judge and, perhaps, to kill.

“Where are you?” Gia whispered.

Mortals always had an aura. Immortal members of the Order of the Sinistra Dei could tell the evil ones by the black streaks in the otherworldly glow. This one had more darkness than most, making him the perfect target.

“I’m right here.” A man stepped into the dim light. Shadows deepened his gaunt features, accentuating the hollows of his cheeks.

“You selling?” She feigned a nervous catch in her voice.

“Naw, but I’m buying.”

Gia caught the gleam of metal in his hand. Even from six feet away, the sour scent of chemicals, mingled with sweat and liquor and stale cigarettes competed with the heap of garbage at the mouth of the alley. The man before her was dangerous—by human standards.

Gia took a step in the addict’s direction. As expected, he lunged for her. Also expected, she sidestepped his advance and shoved his head into the wall. She’d practiced the choreography so many times her muscles moved without thought.

The smell of human blood assaulted her. She covered her nose and pressed a hand to her churning stomach.

Torben leapt from the rooftop and landed a foot to her right. Her hunting partner still looked every bit the part of a tenth century Norseman—dark blond hair, blue eyes, well-muscled, and a scruffy, pointed beard. He could’ve stepped off the cover of some cheesy Viking romance novel. Even his name added to his allure. Torben, the Bear of Thor.

He hoisted the human from the ground and held him at arm’s length while the little bastard flailed in midair. Torben’s height gave him the advantage. The mortal struggled, kicking and stabbing to no avail.

“Drop it.” Gia laced her words with compulsion.

The addict renewed his effort to break free when the knife clattered to the ground.

Torben wrapped an arm around the man’s midsection. “Be still.”

He stopped moving. “I got money. You want cash? Take it. Got drugs, too.”

Gia would have preferred more of a challenge, a chase to get the blood pumping, anything to stave off the boredom. “I miss the old days when we had wars to fight. Hell, I wouldn’t even mind an assassination order. At least I could have some fun, get creative, you know?”

“Peace never lasts.” Torben adjusted his grip on the human.

“Ever the optimist.”

If Torben caught the sarcasm in her voice, he ignored it. “Do you want to read him, or shall I?”

“I will.” Gia stepped in front of her would-be assailant. She pressed her fingertips to the exposed flesh of his wrist and closed her eyes.

Her mind exploded with images of the human’s life, memories, emotions, and regrets—evidence of past sins laid out for her judgment. He preferred the intimacy of killing with knives and took trophies from the bodies; a finger from one, a pretty blue eye from another. She counted four female victims.

Gia detected no remorse. If he regretted his sins, she could choose to release him unharmed, or perhaps release him with the knowledge of the pain he’d brought to others in hopes that he would choose a different path for the future. The monster in Torben’s arms laughed as he relived the worst of his crimes.

There would be no mercy.

Torben met her gaze. “Verdict?”

“Death. He had only pride in his skill. He was nostalgic for his kills.”

“I’m not surprised.”

Without a word, Gia rose to her tiptoes and wrapped her hand around the man’s neck. She opened a link between herself and the human, feeding from his energy, his prana. As she fed, her pale skin illuminated. Gia dipped her chin to hide the light with her hair.

“I love it when you glow.” Torben chuckled and began to feed.

“It’s fun in private, but it draws too much attention on the streets.”

“I remember how fun it was in private.”

Gia narrowed her eyes. “What has gotten into you? Are you flirting with me? Again?”

“What if I am?”

“It’s been a century or so since you have.”

“Have I told you lately how beautiful your eyes are? Like icy blue jewels.” His grin brought out his dimples.

“Have I told you lately that you’re a class-A pain in the ass?” She cut off the energy flow from the human but maintained the mental connection.

“What are you doing?” He took a step back.

“I want to read his thoughts as he dies.”

Torben’s eyes widened. “That’s rather morbid.”

“It’s fascinating. Sometimes I can see a light. It reminds me there’s more to this world than we can see.”

“You need to read a human to believe there’s more than the physical world?”

Gia ignored him. The connection between herself and the dying man flared to life. She not only witnessed, but felt his terror as the ghosts of the women he’d murdered crowded the alley. Through the killer’s eyes, Gia watched the spirit of a young blonde smile at her and Torben. That glimpse of gratitude eased Gia’s conscious. Killing was a sin, but serving justice offered atonement.

The murderer gasped for breath as some of his victims cried for justice while others simply observed. Even his mother came—not to comfort, but to condemn. He struggled to escape as they pulled at him with cold, dead hands. The man’s heart convulsed, and he clutched his chest. The women called for his soul as he died.

Gia broke the link, dazed. No longer in his head, she couldn’t see the spirits. “I wonder if the ghosts are still here.”

“They’re manifestations of his mind. There are no such things as ghosts.” Torben eased the body to the ground.

“How can you be certain?”

“I can’t.” Torben slid his arm around her and led her out of the alley. The farther they walked, the more his shoulders tensed.

“What’s wrong?”

“We need to talk.” He nodded to the knot of people ahead. “Alone.”

As usual, the crowd from the piano bar had spilled onto the sidewalk. Gia stopped walking and stepped out from under Torben’s arm. “I’ve noticed you seem more attentive toward me. But we can’t cross that line.”

“This is far more serious than our relationship, or lack thereof.”

“That sounds ominous.”

Torben met her gaze. “It’s Lochlain. He’s—”

“He’s worried about Marin. It’s been a long time since he imbued a human. He’s fine.” The look in his eyes and tone of his voice tightened Gia’s throat.

“He’s not fine. The day is coming when I’ll be forced to take control of the clutch.”

She’d suspected as much for nearly two decades, but the repercussions were too much to consider. “You’re wrong, and that’s treason. Lochlain won’t let you take the clutch.”

“He may have no choice.” Torben took her chin between his forefinger and thumb, forcing her to look at him. “I’m worried about your safety, Giovanna. Lochlain isn’t in his right mind. He’s losing himself to the darkness. You of all people have to know this.”

Having heard enough, she pulled away. “I need to get back to work.”

“I’ll go with you.” Torben fell in beside her as they walked to the bar on Bourbon Street.

Gia lost herself in her thoughts. What will become of the clutch if Torben forces Lochlain to step down? Can we survive it?

She stopped outside the entrance of the bar, not caring if the humans overheard. “Torben, you’ve been by Lochlain’s side since you joined the Order. What? A thousand years ago?”

 He glanced at those within earshot and lowered his voice. “Something like that.”

“If what you say is true, you need to help Lochlain. You two are like yin and yang. The clutch will fall apart without that balance.”

“I know you love him, but it may be too late.” He spoke as if the words tasted foul.

She ran her hands up his chest, flirting partially to get her way and partially because she needed to touch Torben to anchor herself. He was the one steady thing in her world. “Lochlain has a quick temper and loves the sound of his own voice, but that doesn’t mean he’s evil.”

“There’s more to it than that.” Torben put his hands over hers and removed them from his chest, though he didn’t release them.

“You’re scaring me. Not many of us remain in the world. Letting even one slip into darkness, or be put to death by the Order—”

Torben released her hands and folded his arms. “I’ll do what I can for Lochlain.”

“Thank you.” She believed him, and prayed it would be enough.

Son of a bitch, he couldn’t do it. Couldn’t, didn’t want to—there wasn’t even a difference anymore.

When he left the house, Gabe convinced himself he just needed to find some nameless, faceless woman and screw her, quick and dirty. Against the side of a building, in the back seat of a car, in a fucking bathroom stall. Didn’t even matter at this point. He just needed to take the edge off and appease his damn dragon, who was more determined to hook up with Talia than he’d ever been about anything in Gabe’s entire life.

Except sex with a random woman wasn’t what his dragon wanted. Hell, it wasn’t what he wanted, not anymore. Apparently he and his dragon were of the same mind in this respect. For once.

Which wasn’t helpful. Because sex with Talia was off the table. Not happening. Not possible.
After a frustrating hour of sitting at the bar in his favorite hookup joint, drinking beers and not finding any damn woman in the place interesting enough to even strike up a conversation, Gabe called it a night and headed back home.

His dragon had taken control at the top of the stairs, had led him straight to Talia’s door.
Or maybe it was him. He couldn’t tell anymore.

He stood outside her door, his hand pressed to the wood. But surely she was asleep, and if he snuck into her room, she’d probably shift into a dragon and burn him to a crisp before he could open his mouth to explain.

So he slunk back to his own bedroom.

Now he lay in bed, naked, both his eyes and his hardened shaft staring at the ceiling.

She’s down the hall doing the same damn thing you’re thinking about right now, his dragon whispered, the bastard.

Gabe grabbed his shaft, used the precum gathered at the tip as lubricant, and stroked a couple times, easing the pressure. A bit.

It’d be more fun if you were down the hall.

“For the love of the gods, shut up,” he muttered while trying to get himself off. But it wasn’t working. It was like his damn dragon took control of his dick and was refusing to allow him release.

Go to her.

He’d heard of dragon shifters going insane. In the history books, there were tales of dragons who couldn’t shift back to their human forms, who were forced to live out their lives as the giant, scaly beasts. Which meant they were cut off from society, since they had to go live in places that weren’t inhabited by actual humans.

Was that what Gabe’s dragon was trying to do to him?

I’m trying to give you pleasure. To give us both pleasure. To give her pleasure.

With a huff that pushed a stream of smoke from his nostrils, Gabe released his member and climbed out of bed, stalking out of the room and throwing open her door before he could give himself time to think about his actions and maybe talk himself out of it again.


His damn dragon cheered him on the entire way.

A nightlight was plugged into a socket in the hall, in case Ruby needed to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. The weak light spilled into Talia’s bedroom, illuminating the floor, the rug, and part of the bed. Enough for him to watch as she jerked her hand out of her shorts and scrambled into a seated position on the sheets.

Her chest rose and fell in rapid succession with her heavy breathing. He could smell her arousal. He sucked in air, unabashedly savoring the scent. His cock swelled, bobbing against his abdomen and reminding him that he’d walked in here naked.

Oops. Well, couldn’t hide his intent now.

“Um, what are you doing here?” she asked, her voice cracking, her gaze dropping to his groin. Her nipples were like erasers under her thin top, stabbing at it, almost begging him to tug it over her head so he could get his mouth on them.

Maybe this could work after all. Maybe they could find a happy medium. His dragon, of course, wanted him to leap into that bed, to charm her into having sex with him. And since the scaly beast believed she was his fated mate, Gabe worried it might actually be true.

If they didn’t have sex, that wouldn’t happen. Sex was what sealed the deal, what made the inevitable true. It was like a human wedding ceremony, except way more satisfying.

If one wanted to be mated. Which Gabe didn’t.

But mutual pleasure? Definitely wasn’t opposed to that. If she was interested, at any rate.
He waved at his member. “I’m having a hard time sleeping.”

Her lips quirked, and he responded with a sheepish grin.

“Did you, um, get lucky tonight?” She was having a difficult time pulling her gaze above waist level.

That was good.

“Not yet.” He stepped into the room. “Nobody interesting at the bar.” Go for honesty. “Because I couldn’t stop thinking about you.”

“Oh.” The word was a gasp, her eyes widening, her hand lifting, squeezing into a fist and pressing against her chest, between her breasts.

He took another step toward the bed. “Maybe, you know, maybe we can…” He’d never had a difficult time with words before, but then again, he’d never proposed not-quite-sex with a woman who may or may not be his fated mate, either.

“Do you think it’s wise?” she asked. “Sleeping together, I mean.”

He shook his head. “No sex. Just…everything else. Anything you want. Other than sex.”

She stared at him, her breathing coming in short pants, the scent of her arousal strengthening. His offer was tempting her. Thank the gods.

“Why?”

“Because I’m so fucking attracted to you I can’t even think about anyone else. And I think you feel the same.”

“No, I mean, why no sex?”

“I…” What the hell did he say? She didn’t seem to be aware of the fact that they may be fated mates, and he sure as hell didn’t want to bring it to her attention.

Clearing his throat, he said, “No, uh, condoms.” Female dragons couldn’t take human birth control. The hormones or whatever screwed with their heads, made them a little crazy, and half the time didn’t work anyway. So the only way to prevent baby dragons was condoms. Or not actually penetrating.

Brilliant.

“But all the other stuff, that’s the fun part anyway.” He quirked a brow. “I assure you, my tongue is an expert at pleasuring females.”

“Oh.” She squeezed her thighs together, probably imagining his head down there between them, his tongue lapping at her juices. Or at least he hoped that was what she was thinking. It was definitely part of his game plan for this evening.

All she had to do was say yes.

Her gaze darted to the open door behind him. “What about Ruby?”

He took another step closer. “She’s asleep.”

“I mean, what about her as far as…us.”

Not what he wanted to think about. He just wanted to ease the ache in his balls. Give her a handful of orgasms. That was it.

“Maybe we keep this between us. Not tell her. Or anyone.”

She frowned. “That’s for the best.”

Did that mean yes? He took another tentative step. He was so close his shadow fell across her legs and he could reach out and touch her bare shoulder. As soon as she said yes.

“Let me show you what it’s like, Talia.” His voice was gravelly, low, needy. “I have a few ideas. I promise you’ll be pleased. And exhausted. Sated.”

She didn’t say anything. For long moments, there was only the sound of their individual breathing while the anticipation in the air grew until it was damn near suffocating.

“Do you…do you have a couple of silk ties?”

Tibor yanked her by her hair.

Pain jolted through her scalp, her teeth snapped together so hard, she saw spots of black. Tears squeezed out of the corner of her eyes. Still, she refused to let go of her mate.

"So strong," Tibor leaned close enough for his breath to graze her cheek.

She shivered. The hair on her forearms grew hard. Sickness bubbled up her throat. She stayed where she was. Holding on to Axel.

Tibor pulled at her.

The force was strong enough for her hands to slide down to Axel's forearms. She held on there, feeling the strength of his muscles, the curve of his biceps. The feel of his skin against her's. "Axe" she cried out.

His head twitched. He gritted his teeth and raised his head. Sweat poured down his forehead, dripping down his throat. His features were ashen. His eyelids fluttered open and locked onto her's.

She gasped. They were completely dark. She'd never seen them so perfectly black like his iris was dissolving into himself. Like his emotions were eating him from the inside out. He was trapped in a personal hell. What was he reliving right then?

Tibor let go of her hair, only to wrap his fingers around the nape of her neck.

Terror squeezed her chest. Her throat went dry. She tried to keep the fear from her face, kept her features calm, and her emotions from showing. "Axe," Her voice was strong when she spoke. "Get up, break through his hold."

Some of the darkness in his iris receded. The black lightened to dull gray. "Freya," His voice came out on a whisper.

"It's me. I'm here." She dug her nails into his skin.

His muscles jumped.

She was hurting him. But if that's what it took to get through to him, then that was fine.

Tibor hauled her up by the scruff of her neck. His lips were close to her ear. "You love him." His voice rippled over her, echoing through her head. "You can't let him die for you. Your life is over, you are tainted, you may as well give yourself to me. Release him Freya. Release Axel so he can live."
