~ EXCERPT ~ Barely out the kitchen door, he shifted into the form of a sleek black panther. These woods were part of Josh’s property, so it was highly unlikely anyone but other shifters would be wandering around out here, leaving Matt free to be whatever form he wanted. And if there were humans out here, well, they were trespassing, and they deserved to have the shit scared out of them by a massive cat one didn’t normally see in the ’burbs.
He prowled for a bit, sniffing around, pouncing on a frightened rabbit and then letting it go because he wasn’t really hungry at the moment. He shook his entire body as if shaking water away, and was about to break into a full out run, when something small, bright, and jittery caught his eye. He watched as a cluster of sparkling lights danced around near a tree.
It was something supernatural. Matt knew there were other magical beings in this world; shifters and Lightbearers did not own that market. It was just that shifters tended to be exclusive creatures, and as a rule didn’t have much desire to intermingle with other beings. As a result, he knew precious little about most of the other creatures out there.
He considered Josh’s arguments as he continued to watch the dancing sparks. His shifter urges–so primal in this form–were pushing him to take a swipe at the dancing lights and then lay chase if they dashed away. He didn’t know what he would do once he caught them–as he was certain he would–but it was the chase that was the exciting part anyway.
He wasn’t particularly worried that this magical creature might be dangerous to him. Shifters had always considered themselves to be at the top of the food chain, and no other beings had ever stepped forward to refute that claim.
The shimmering, sparkling lights darted to the right and then the left, and Matt’s gaze followed, as he stood perfectly still, poised, every muscle tensed. Prepared to give chase.
And then he could have sworn he heard a feminine giggle a scant second before the lights suddenly darted away through the woods. He started running before his brain even comprehended what he was doing.
They zipped through the undergrowth, the dancing, floating lights keeping just out of Matt’s reach as he lunged once, twice, three times unsuccessfully. The attempts only spurred him to try harder. Defeat was not an option.
The lights zoomed over a small stream, and Matt knew the magical creature expected the flowing water would slow him down, but he was smarter than that. He kicked up his speed and then at the last second, soared over the brook, easily clearing it, and then he leaped again, capturing the bundle of lights in his front paws.
The lights danced and wiggled in protest, and when they could not escape, he felt something pressing against his paws, harder and harder, and then his paws were forced apart as the lights transformed into the shape of a female—although slight—in human form. With the shimmering sparks, her dainty, petite build, and pixie-like features, she reminded him of Tinkerbell with pink hair. Even as a kid, he’d had the hots for the tiny faery from the old Peter Pan movies, although he never believed itty bitty faeries were real, until now.
The weight of his panther’s body pushed the tiny female into the bed of fallen leaves, and he found himself standing over a highly agitated and quite beautiful creature, lying on her back, struggling to get out from under the massive paws that had her pinned to the ground.
She had hair that was short in the back and long in the front, one thick lock draped over her left eye. It was a fascinating shade of dark pink. The one eye he could see was big and blue. Her dainty features included a pert nose and tiny pink rosebud lips that were currently pursed in agitation. Her cheekbones were high, her skin creamy alabaster, her neck slender and long. Despite her petite stature, she had the right amount of feminine curves for most males.
Except Matt. He preferred his women to be more… sturdy. This creature looked as fragile as a twig. And as mad as a cornered wolverine.
He shifted into human form, which left him straddling her hips with his hands pressed against her shoulders. He sat up, crossing his arms over his chest, but remained where he was. Although he wasn’t normally attracted to such tiny females, this one fit quite nicely between his thighs.
“What are you?” he asked curiously.
She gave his chest a shove. He didn’t even blink let alone budge.
“Get off me.” Her musical voice was loaded with indignation.
“How do I know you don’t mean me harm?”
“Oh get off it. You’re a shifter. You could eat me in two bites if you were so inclined.”
He cocked his head and let his gaze travel the length of her body, lingering on the slight curves, the soft mounds under the gossamer dress she wore. His cock gave a stir of interest.
“I could. How do you taste?”
She screwed up her face into a look of distaste. “Is this your idea of flirting? No wonder you need help.” She used a burst of magical energy to push him away. He rolled to the side and she leaped to her feet, as limber and agile as a gazelle.
Maybe I’m hungry after all. Why did he consistently view this creature in terms of prey? Watching her brush grass and dried leaves from her dress, he reached over and plucked a twig from her hair. She reacted as if he’d burned her. He showed her the twig and she rewarded him with a frosty glare. He almost laughed, but was too distracted by the feel of the spun silk of her hair. He looked, but there were no more twigs to give him an excuse to touch it again.
“That was completely unnecessary,” she said tartly.
“Which part?”
“Pouncing on me the way you did.”
“You just said you knew I was a shifter. What did you expect? We’re animals. And I was in the form of a cat when I saw you. Dancing sparks, bouncing around like that, it’s like shining a flashlight in a dark room. I was only doing what came naturally.” He shrugged.
“It’s natural to give chase,” she retorted, “but not to pin me to the ground and not let me up.”
“I’m not sure what type of shifter you normally hang out with, but frankly, it would have been more natural if I’d taken a bite out of you instead of letting you go.”
She sniffed and lifted her chin. “That’s not what the handbook says.”
Matt laughed. “The handbook? There’s a handbook about shifters? Really?”
The petite being crossed her arms and thrust out her tiny, elegant chin even farther. Visions of licking his way from that chin along that neck and down to points south filled Matt’s brain. He shook his head to rid it of such crazy thoughts. He wasn’t that sex starved, was he? It hadn’t been that long since he’d last gotten laid.
“We have a handbook on practically every species of living creatures. At least, all the ones we work with.”
“We? Who’s we? What are you, anyway?” Matt leaned against the nearest tree, crossing his ankles and arms, as casual as she appeared tense.
That adorable chin lifted another notch. “I am a Cupid,” she announced.
Matt blinked. “A what?”
“A Cupid,” she repeated, clearly irritated at his lack of reaction to her announcement.
“What the hell is that?”
She cocked her head and regarded him. “You’ve never heard of Cupids?”
Matt shook his head. “I guess your little handbook didn’t mention that shifters don’t really associate much with other beings.”
She nodded slowly. “Yes, actually, it did mention that. It’s just that I assumed… I mean, I figured you would at least be aware of other beings, even if you never associated with them.”
Matt shrugged. “Nope. So what’s a Cupid? And what’s your name, anyway?” If they were going to carry on a conversation, the least they could do was make introductions.
She dipped into a curtsy that would make a seventeenth century princess proud and said, “I am Adora Adone, Cupid Level One. Pleased to meet you.”
“Adora Adone?” he repeated. “As in love and desire?” He may not know of her kind, but he knew a little about other languages.
“Yes,” she said brightly. “That is exactly how my name translates. Clever, don’t you think?”
Matt didn’t respond to her question. “I’m Matt Tigre,” he said, offering his own introduction.
“I know. You are the one I was sent to help.”
He cocked an eyebrow. “You were sent to help me? I didn’t realize I needed help.”
She nodded solemnly. “Few do, when they are at the point where they require our assistance.”
“Our? There are more of you?”
Another nod, still solemn. “Oh yes. There are quite a lot of us. And despite our numbers, we stay constantly busy. Few people are successful at finding love without our interference.”
“Finding love?” Matt repeated, and then he shot up straight, staring at her as if she’d sprouted a second head. For all intents and purposes, she had.
Cupid. Little cherub with a bow and arrow. Matchmaker. He knew the legends, had always assumed they were a human’s made-up tale. It never occurred to him that the tales might actually be… real?
He backed up a step, needing to put space between himself and the crazed woman standing before him. “Wait a second. You think you’re going to–you mean–all that crap about bows and arrows and love and shit really exists?”
Her face screwed up with righteous indignation again. It was really quite an adorable look for her, despite what she claimed to be. “What a crass way to describe what I do. And for your information, we no longer use bows and arrows. Most have lousy aim, and we were forever accidentally hitting the wrong person.” She shook her head at some memory. “It’s highly difficult to undo the connection once it’s been made, accidental or otherwise.”
Matt took another step backwards. “And you think you’re going after me now?”
“You are my latest assignment,” she confirmed.
“Assignment? Who determines this assignment? And how the hell do I get unassigned?”

*EXCERPT* Pirate's Passion by Lisa Kessler
NEW
Samuel Keegan used to man the wheel of the Sea Dog over 200 years ago, but these days his crew is back together searching for the Holy Grail. The quest leads him to Dr. Charlotte Sinclair, an expert on ancient pirate wrecks. She's smart, stubborn, and free-willed, but in the end her life might depend on one Pirate's Passion...

~ EXCERPT ~ “What shall we do with the drunken sailor early in the mornin’?” Keegan held the last note over the roar of the crowd at the pub, and finished with a flourished bow.
It was a Scallywag tradition to end their concerts with a pirate shanty. Course no one in the band, or the crowd, knew he’d been singing the salty tunes for more than two hundred years now.
Keegan scanned the pub for the raven-haired beauty who had caught his eye in the front row. When his gaze met hers, her full red lips curved into a sexy welcoming smile, and his heart hit a familiar rhythm. She’d be his tonight.
The world had changed around him over the years. He no longer piloted a pirate ship. Instead, he carried a cell phone and fronted a southern rock band, but raw passion, the animal attraction between a man and a woman, that magic remained untouched.
He couldn’t say the same for the woman in the front row.
After he stuffed the mic back into the stand, he approached her and knelt down, shouting over the noise. “What’s your name, lass?”
She grinned. “Char.”
“Meet me backstage. I’ll tell the crew to expect you.” Her eyes sparkled, wild, and damn did he want to taste those lips. “Say yes.”
“Maybe.” She backed up into the crowd as Keegan rose to his full height.
He chuckled and straightened his leather frock coat. Saucy. Usually women were eager for him back stage invitations. He followed the band offstage, grabbing one of the security guys on his way. “Hey mate, if a gorgeous woman named Char comes looking for me, let her through.”
The man at the door agreed, and Keegan headed for his tiny green room. He loved playing at the Moon River Brewing Company. The place was haunted, but hell, so was most of Savannah. That was part of why he stayed. While the rest of the world moved into the future, new buildings, new transportation, and new technology, the historic heart of Savannah, Georgia did its best to remain the same.
He didn’t feel out of place here.
After hanging up his coat, he ran a comb through his hair and grinned when a knock sounded at his door. He opened it and stared down into a pair of fathomless dark eyes. “A woman of her word. I like that.”
“I didn’t give you my word, just a solid maybe. Call me…curious.” She smiled, her hip jutting to the side. Her stance was nothing like the giddy groupies he usually entertained after shows. “Are you going to invite me in?”
He nodded, taking a step back. Most of the women who came backstage had their lips on his before he could speak, and he carried them inside.
Pleasantries. This was new.
As he closed the door and turned around, he found her inspecting his coat. He chuckled, raising a brow. “Didn’t realize you were a costumer.”
“I’m not.” Her gaze snapped up to meet his, a smile replacing the contemplative stare from a moment before. “Just don’t often see that kind of workmanship unless it’s in a museum.”
He glanced at his coat. The same one he’d worn the night he stood at the helm of the Sea Dog gripping the wheel as they smashed into the rocks. He’d mended the coat over the years, but the majority of the leather was older than the historic building they were standing in.
“It’s been passed down in my family for generations.” He focused on her again, shoving away thoughts better left under the sea with the remains of the ship. “Did you enjoy the show tonight?”
“I did.” She nodded, coming closer. “You don’t usually end your sets with such a well-known shanty.”
She was a fan. He shrugged, an easy smile curving his lips. “Nothing wrong with an old favorite.”
“I guess not.” She shrugged.
Keegan moved a little closer, intrigued by this woman who seemed more interested in his coat than the body that was recently inside it. If he didn’t already know better, he might’ve worried he was losing his touch with the ladies. Usually women who visited his dressing room were sauced from the bar and rubbing all over him. He didn’t need to converse much.
Char’s cheeks were flushed, but she was nowhere near shit-faced.
Her voice was rich, velvety, and thick, like her long hair. “I’ve never come backstage before.”
“I’d love to change that…” A smile teased the corners of his mouth as he took a step closer, reaching for her hand.
She chuckled with a playful spark in her eyes. “Do lines like that work for you?”
He raised a brow. “Often.” He pulled her a little closer, aching to taste her lips. “But I must admit, you intrigue me. Why did you come to my door?”
She wet her lips and whispered, “I promised my friend at work that tonight would be a night of yes.”
Her final word carried a breathiness that had his blood rushing to his groin. His voice dropped to a raw growl more than a whisper. “What if I asked if I could kiss you?”
Her eyes searched his as she whispered, “Yes.”
His pulse hadn’t raced like this in lifetimes. He bent to kiss her lips and coaxed her to open to him, groaning with desire. She tasted like spiced rum and pineapple. Her tongue tangled slowly with his. He couldn’t get enough. Her hands slid into his hair; her full breasts pressed tight against his chest.
He needed much more. Keegan backed her toward his dressing area and lifted her onto the counter, without ceasing his delicious assault on her warm mouth. She tugged his T-shirt free of his jeans, breaking the kiss long enough to pull it off. She dropped it to the ground as he fused his lips to hers again.
Her fingers explored his chest, her touch setting him on fire. His erection ached for freedom from his jeans as she wrapped her legs around his waist.
He wanted her naked. Now.
Sliding his hands underneath the back of her top, he kissed his way down her neck when something buzzed between them.
“Shit.” She gasped, digging into her pocket for her phone.
Fucking cell phones.
She raked a hand through her hair, then pulled it back from her face. God, she was beautiful.
A crease formed between her brows as she stared at the screen. She shook her head, meeting his eyes. “I’m sorry. I’ve got to go.”
For a second, he couldn’t understand her. “Go?”
She nodded. “Yeah. I don’t want to, but this is really important.”
Keegan stepped back, shaking his head, struggling to rein in the yearning she’d kindled inside him. He needed a cold shower. Maybe two.
“Pity,” he muttered.
She hopped off his counter, her gaze wandering over his bare chest as her teeth caught her lower lip. “Damn.” She cleared her throat. “I’m really sorry.”
He took some solace in the way her skin flushed, at the hunger in her eyes. She’d wanted him, too.
He yanked his cell out of his pocket. “Maybe I could call you later.”
She ran her fingers back through her long black hair. “Probably not. This…” She gestured at his dressing room. “I don’t do things like this. Rum always steals my better judgment.”
“Good to know.” He smirked.
She reached for the door and stopped, glancing back over her shoulder, that wicked smile curving on her lips again. “I’m glad I said yes.” She straightened her top and flipped her hair behind her shoulder. “It was great meeting you, Keegan.”
And just like that, Char walked out of his dressing room, leaving him behind with a raging erection. For a moment, he toyed with the idea of trolling the bar for another willing fan, but when he picked up his shirt from the floor, he realized sex with someone else wasn’t what he wanted.
He wanted her.
Odd.
He needed something else to think about. Keegan grabbed his coat and bag and headed out the back door for home. There was definitely a cold shower in his future.

“You don’t fight fair,” I stated flatly. “I can barely resist you.”
“Then don’t.”
An arm snaked around my waist, pulling me to her so that her front pressed against my back. She slid her hand under the hem of my shirt, her nails gently scraping my skin. I closed my eyes and didn’t move away like I should. Instead, I turned my head slightly and breathed in her scent: Magnolias and wine and sugar and cocoa from that cake she’d eaten earlier. I wasn’t hungry; I’d indulged in a courtesan only last night, but I still wanted a nip, a taste of her blood. There was no better dessert than my precious Abigail.
She swiveled her hips, rubbing against my ass, while her hand travelled south. When her fingertips grazed my erection, it was like she’d flipped a switch. I was gone. I couldn’t say no any longer. I needed this as much as she seemed to.
One night. I could handle one more night, couldn’t I? Letting her go the first time had nearly broke me, so I should know better, but clearly, she was a master at seduction. Or perhaps it was my obsession for her. I’d had far more skilled women in my long existence, and none made me remotely as lust-crazed as this one did.
Wrapping my arm around her back, I twisted us both, switching our positions so that her ass now rested against my throbbing erection. Dipping my head, I nipped at her bare shoulder, sliding my fang back and forth over her skin but not penetrating. Yet.
She cupped my backside and her other hand threaded into my hair. I pressed my hardness against her ass and gathered the hem of her dress in my hand so I could get to what was underneath. Her naked flesh, the gathering wetness and heat that was all for me.
“One more night,” I said, vocalizing my thoughts, as if that would somehow give me strength to follow through on the promise. I slipped my hand under the elastic of her panties; my fingers found her shaved mound.
“What?” she said, wiggling, which I took to mean she wanted more. So I pushed my hand lower until it slid through wetness. She arched and moaned and then said, “What did you say?”
No idea. I couldn’t even recall speaking at this point. My entire focus was on the task at hand. She needed an orgasm, multiple ones. I needed to ensure she never forgot this night when I sent her back to her human life.
“I want more,” she said, shifting her hips.
“I’ll give you more. We’ve all night, love.”
“No.” There was a touch of impatience to her voice now, and I finally realized she wasn’t struggling for more, she was trying to get away from me. I tugged my hand out of her panties and turned her around to face me. Her eyes were bright, her color high, her hair mused, and she looked so damn fuckable, I wanted to pick her up and toss her onto the bed and ravish her for the rest of our time together.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, my impatience matching hers. Now that I’ve made this decision, I didn’t want to waste a single moment.
“This.” She waved her finger between the two of us. “This isn’t just one night. I don’t want one night. I want all of eternity.”
All of eternity?
She wanted me to turn her.

“Take off your T-shirt.” Her voice was rough. His eyes widened. She’d surprised him. Good. She had to keep one step ahead of him. He looked at her from under hooded eyes. “You got it, babe.” Oh, she hated it when he was all flippant. That careless charm hid a far more complex man, one whose feelings she was just beginning to sense. Reaching down, he grabbed the edge of his T-shirt and began to peel it off. The scent of him grew stronger, hot and heavy with an undercurrent of spice that hinted at his desire. It curled around her, pulled her, and tugged at her core. She grew wet. She wanted to mirror his actions, draw her dress down her shoulders, bare her breasts, and rub her aching nipples against his hard chest. She took a step forward in his direction, as if drawn by an invisible thread. He dropped the T-shirt on the table. The whisper of cloth on the surface rasped over her skin. Her nerve endings seem to come alive all at once. She drank up the sight of his bare chest, the tendons of his neck that stretched and bowed with each breath, the sculpted beauty of those hard planes, the rounded nubs of his male nipples…and oh! A pleased smirk jerked at his lips. “Like what you see, babe?” She sensed he knew exactly the kind of impact he was having on her, but she nearly forgave him his cocky assurance. He was magnificent. She could almost understand where that self-confidence was coming from. She should step back and turn and leave and get away while she could… Her fingers twitched, ached to reach out and touch the object of her fascination. She simply had to. “Can I?” “May I.” “What?” She sounded drugged, almost pleading. “Grammar, babe, grammar. My adoptive parents were of Italian origin, but don’t forget I grew up in New London, went to a public school after all.” A bead of sweat slid down the line that demarcated the perfection of his pecs. “May I…please?” Without waiting for his response, she slid forward into the space between his thighs. She reached for the ring that threaded his left nipple and dragged it down slightly. His shoulders bunched. The muscles of his stomach drew in. His chest planes seemed to harden even more. He froze. “Does it hurt? I didn’t mean to…” Even as she said it, she knew that wasn’t the case, and she really didn’t want to know the effect of her little experiment, and really, she had no idea what she was thinking anymore. She’d lost all capacity to string a coherent sentence together. She straightened and made to step back. His palms landed on her hips, and he held her in place. The heat of his fingers burned through the thin cloth of her shirt. “Don’t do that again, not unless you want to finish what you started, not unless you intend to replace your fingers with your mouth, got it?”

~ EXCERPT ~ Morgan studied the island through the pair of binoculars she'd packed in her bag. The boat rose and fell with the waves, but the motion didn't bother her. The water did. The lake lay like a mirror, the gray sky a perfect reflection on its surface. She watched the boy try to skip stones, but he wasn't coordinated enough yet, and the stones sank rather than skipped. The water absorbed the ripples before they got too far, the liquid more like quicksand. The heaviness of the humid air didn't help the sense of oppressiveness and only confirmed what she'd been thinking—she needed to escape Avalon. Morgan blinked the memory away. The past liked to intrude when she felt unsure of the present. The trick of the water had been Merlin's, and indeed, rather than the usual tumble of waves along the shore, the sea only lapped at the edge of the sand.Getting past that would be her first challenge."There's a defense spell at the shoreline." She lowered the binoculars and looked at Elric. "Remind me what's so special about…?" She inclined her head toward the island.Elric only shrugged. "Maeve wants him. That's all you need to know."Morgan raised the binoculars again. She caught a glimpse of something moving in the foliage. They'd had the captain drop the anchor and shut off the engines and lights so no one would know they were there, but the tingling feeling at the back of her neck told Morgan they'd been spotted. A twin pair of red lights appeared."Crap, he's hungry." And there was no telling what a starving young vamp would do. But there was something strange about how he moved. He reeled, almost drunkenly, or that's how it appeared from the motion of the lights. She lowered the binoculars and shook her head. There was definitely something weird going on."I've inflated the raft." Elric gestured to the rubber dingy that now floated next to the boat."Right." Morgan put the binoculars back in her bag and walked to the rail. She dropped her bag into the flimsy-looking vessel and took a deep breath, ignoring the chemical-plastic smell. Next to still water, she hated small watercraft the most. "And I have to bring him back alive?""Yes." Elric's mouth had almost disappeared into a straight line, and a tiny muscle danced along his jaw. "You can't collect on a pile of ash.""Damn." Flimsy boat, hungry vamp, secured island… What could go right? She swung a leg over the rail, followed it with the other one, and then climbed down into the raft. The oars were inside. With a sigh, she took off toward the island. After about ten minutes of rowing, the momentum of the surf took over, and she floated closer and closer to her target. Then the raft bumped into something that allowed the water to pass through, albeit in a muted fashion with smaller waves, but stopped her progress. An almost electric buzz hummed beneath her, and fog rolled in from both sides, obscuring her vision.Ah, at least that felt familiar. Merlin had modernized his spell, but she guessed it was similar to what had protected Avalon. Not that Merlin had come up with that one—it had preceded him by centuries—but it hadn't taken long for him to figure it out and refine it.Morgan whispered the Celtic phrase that had parted the mists at Avalon, but of course it didn't work. She needed a modern phrase for a modern spell. Merlin had always had an ego, so she searched her brain for phrases he would appreciate in reference to himself."Merlin, greatest wizard of all time." The fog rolled, but it didn't part."Merlin, he who must be obeyed." Okay, she didn't really think that one would work, but it was worth a shot."Merlin the Magnificent, advisor to kings and head of the Truth Seekers."A keypad made of mists appeared in front of her. Aha, so she'd summoned the lock. What would Merlin use as his password? She thought about trying 1-2-3-4, but while she would've appreciated the irony, she didn't know how many shots she'd get. So she tried the one date Merlin would always cherish—the date of the coronation of Arthur, when Merlin had secured his own place of power. Calendars had changed, but Morgan had a good sense for when dates were and had been. She punched in the date, and the fog rolled away and allowed her little dinghy to proceed."One down," she muttered. The water guided her vessel to bump gently against the sand. She pulled a stake crossbow from her bag. She loaded it with what she called her baby stakes—non-consecrated wood and without a silver core. If the vamp charged her, she'd at least be able to slow him down without killing him. At least not before she could deliver him to Maeve. If he died soon after, she'd at least have met her part of the bargain. The sound of crashing in the foliage just beyond the shoreline made her duck into the boat. Then she remembered it wouldn't provide much of a shield. She jumped out and ran along the sand so she'd at least not be in direct sight of whatever it was when it emerged. She crouched behind a fallen tree and watched. A figure stumbled out of the forest and sprawled on the sand."Fucking birds with your fucking berries," a male voice slurred. The creature lifted its head and looked around, the dim red of its eyes illuminating the sand around it.
Morgan's jaw dropped. A drunken vampire? How in the world could that have happened? Then something smacked her in the back of the head.

~ Goldilocks and the Bear ~
Ramsay snorted, unable to blame his guest for bypassing the other two bowls. After wolfing down his portion and Heldreth’s serving, he made his way into the bedroom. It wasn’t until he reached for his blankets that he noticed the golden head peeking out from beneath the covers.
Had they sent him entertainment instead, deciding the best way to coerce their new Father Bear into a vacation would be for him to take his comfort in a soft woman? The plan seemed devious enough for Little Bear, with a hint of Heldreth’s busybody nature. Hadn’t she been the one to suggest for him to claim a mate and do it soon?
Ramsay grunted. Had the others not preferred their beds to be unsuitable polar opposites, he would have crawled into one of them instead. For a moment, he didn’t know what to do, confused by the girl’s presence. She didn’t smell like bear or have the broad shoulders and muscular physique of a shifter woman.
Peeling back the blankets for a look at her confirmed his suspicions. Her slight frame, fragile and fine-boned, would have broken beneath a bear woman’s fists. Her blonde hair spilled as gold as the sun over his pillows, and freckles stood out against her fair cheeks.
Not knowing what to make of it, he admired her longer. The fact that she’d chosen his bed couldn’t be a coincidence, so he threw caution to the wind and crawled in beneath the blankets.
Her hair smelled like lilacs, and when he curled his arms around her, she snuggled in closer against him. While she’d gone to bed in too much clothing—her simple nightshift interrupting the skin-to-skin contact he would have preferred—she was still an improvement over sleeping alone. He nuzzled her once or twice but found her sound asleep, unresponsive aside from a content, indiscernible murmur.
The peaceful rhythm of her breathing lulled him to sleep. With his arms around her, he held her safe and secure.
An explosion of pain in the abdomen jerked Ramsay awake. He tumbled back and out of the large bed, landing on the wooden floor.
Ramsay’s mind jumped to a dozen possibilities, the worst of them being that they were under attack. He got his bearings and prepared to shift, leaping to his feet before he realized the girl was crouched above him on the bed with a dagger in her hand and fire in her eyes.
“What in the stars was that about?” he roared. The pain rapidly faded, but the bewilderment only worsened with each passing second.
“Who are you?” his assailant questioned in his language, her Oclander flawed but understandable. “How dare you welcome yourself to my bed as if I were some strumpet to be fondled in sleep?”
“Your bed?” he growled low, the noise rumbling through his chest. “You invade my lodge and my bed, then have the sheer cheek to pull a knife on me?”
“Do you often crawl into bed with strangers?”
“When I’m tired and want my bed, yes,” he snapped back. When he moved closer, the girl feinted with the blade and warned him back again. It made him want her even more. For a human, she had nerve. A spine of steel, something he wouldn’t have expected of a fragile non-shifter. “Come back to bed with me.”
“No. In fact, I think I’ll be leaving.”
Thunder cracked overhead and shook the cabin, making them both glance toward the nearest window. Another booming roll soon followed.
“You won’t be going anywhere in this weather. Now, who sent you, girl? Was it Talbot?”
Her brow creased. “No one sent me here at all.”
Studying her long enough to take in her state of partial undress, his eyes swept the dimmed room until he located travel leathers and a cloak. “So you’re an intruder who chose to help herself to my lodge.”
“I didn’t mean to,” she said in a more apologetic tone. “In fact, I’d planned to beg your kindness to escape the storm.”
“But I wasn’t here.”
The knife wavered and lowered an inch as indecision furrowed her brow again. “I will leave if I must. Putting you out wasn’t my intention.”
Ramsay ran his fingers through his short blond hair. A beautiful woman had landed in his lap by chance, and she couldn’t wait to be away from him. “You haven’t put me out. If you must know, I’d expected the company of my fellow clansmen, who won’t be joining me after all. I’d say help yourself to my lodgings, but you’ve already done that.”
Hot color spread across her cheeks. “I planned to leave some coins if no one showed up before I left, and I did clean up my mess.” Her gaze drifted lower and passed over his chest, only to jerk upward again to his face.
“Coin isn’t necessary. I’ve plenty of my own. Ah… listen. Stay the night then, and we’ll call this a misunderstanding. The storm is raging out there, and your poor horse doesn’t deserve the punishment.” He gestured to the bed. “Go on then.”
