I want to welcome Mohana to my blog! She has given us a portion of her life story that is relevant to me and maybe to you as well. Don't think that it may not apply to you because you don't write or don't self-publish, rather think about it as she dared to open the door to her dreams. I have too. Have you? If you haven't, I hope that you will...soon.

From Me to You (or Why I Went Indie)

By Mohanalakshmi Rajakumar
This time last year I was in New York City, that metropolis of culture, entertainment, and commercial publishing. As part of a literary festival, I pitched my novel, then a work in progress, to over 30 agents. This was the first time I had spoken to agents face to face. One said they didn’t know how to sell a novel with a male protagonist to female readers. Another said that a foreign setting didn’t appeal to US readers and asked me to change the places where the story took place. People I talked to in line said they had come to this event last year or the year before, and they were back after making changes to their projects.
I vowed there in line that I would not be back next year, spinning my wheels. I would rather try the indie route, the one I heard so much about in other sessions at the same conference.
“Don’t tell them that,” one of the organizers said, inclining her head towards the seated agents.
Twelve of them said yes, they’d like to see more of the story as it was. Armed with these signs of encouragement, and it must be said, the human contact, I returned to our home in Doha, Qatar, to send the manuscript off.
Sure enough, as I kept working on the manuscript, and sent out samples as requested, the personal touch I had received at the conference (doled out in three minute segments) evaporated. In their place were the form rejections that I had received in the ten or so years I had been writing.
“We regret that we cannot represent your work and are returning this to you as someone else might feel otherwise.”
I did what I had promised myself (and threatened to do at the conference), I self-published. Not just the one I had gone to New York to sell but five others. I started with the oldest and worked my way forward as a way of trial and error in the e-pub world. I learned a lot: a made a few mistakes.
Here are my top two rules for success:
One: Get your network ready long before you need to use it. This means make friends, gain followers, give reviews, and re-tweet. You get what you give and you give what you get. So give a lot in the ramp up to your own work and the community will embrace you.
Two: Explore the range of services available for indies including editing, cover design, proof reading, formatting of your ebook, and book trailer creation. You may find people you like working with immediately; you may want to do a few of these tasks yourself.
Now, a year later, I am ready to launch the one book that triggered it all: Love Comes Later. If you have a story and the time, grit, and determination to get it into the hands of readers, then epublishing is for you.
Description of Love Comes Later:
Hind is granted a temporary reprieve from her impending marriage to Abdulla, her cousin. Little does anyone suspect that the presence of Sangita, her Indian roommate, may shake a carefully constructed future. Torn between loyalties to Hind and a growing attraction to Abdulla, Sangita must choose between friendship and a burgeoning love.

A modern quest for the right to pursue love and happiness, even when it comes in an unconventional package, LOVE COMES LATER explores similarities between the South Asian and Arab cultures while exposing how cultural expectations affect both men and women. Identities are tested and boundaries questioned against the shifting backdrops of Doha, Qatar and London, England.Show More Show Less <font face="Verdana, sans-serif"></font>

Remembering Independence Day

We all remember our independence differently. Because of my history and English background, I chose to recall it through poetry. The beginning of the American revolution gave us a couple of famous phrases from noted authors that are often quoted but actually came into our conscious at a much later date.

One of the most recognizable is "The British are coming! The British are coming!" This is attributed to the silversmith Paul Revere. He did not actually shout it but rode to notify the waiting American militia that British forces were approaching. Paul Revere was not the only one to ride out with the news, for instance Israel Bissell also rode out, but his name wasn't easy to rhyme with. We remember Paul Revere so successfully because of  Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem, "Paul Revere's Ride."

Listen, my children, and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere...

Then we have "the shot heard around the world" in various forms, which is actually from the opening stanza of Ralph Waldo Emerson's "Concord Hymn" (1837):

Here once the embattled farmers stood,
And fired the shot heard round the world.

He referred to the battles of Lexington and Concord which began the American Revolution in April 1775 when the British tried to seize the weapons store located there. Why did the world hear it? Royalty in many countries were worried about the outcome of any conflict, rightfully so because the American Revolution inspired other revolutions, most notably the French Revolution.

So congratulations to all those who have since gained independence!

Now three-quarters of the runway were left behind; the far end was expanding sideways as it drew closer, with huge snow-covered boulders beyond. Forty knots... thirty knots... The end of the runway was now only six hundred feet away, and still coming on fast... Now the plane began to bounce on the rough dirt at the end of the runway; five hundred feet... four hundred... The boulders were looming ominously ahead, like a shark's teeth; the plane was heading straight for them. When a routine scientific mission in the Canadian Arctic goes terribly wrong and one of the men is badly hurt, his only hope for survival is to have a surgeon airlifted to the remote, deserted island where he is located. With a fierce polar cyclone closing in and the Canadian helicopters grounded due to bad weather, it is up to the rescue pilot Heather Mallory of the US Civil Air Patrol, and her husband Rick Floyd, a field surgeon in the Army, to carry out a desperate plan: they must fly in a twin-engine light airplane to the very limits of its maximum range, where Rick is to parachute to the island in high winds and perform the life-saving surgery, while Heather tries to find a nearby airfield in heavy fog and with her fuel supply nearly exhausted. Will they succeed in saving the man's life... or will they, too, end up dead?

Nobody at Bristlecone High School has ever paid attention to William Rose. Since the day he arrived in the small, mountain town years ago, he's blended into the background. Quinn Robbins never noticed William at all, until the icy Friday night he suddenly appeared directly in the path of her car, and just as suddenly vanished. After that, she found herself noticing him constantly, seeing for the first time just how different he was. First were the books he always had his nose buried in. Why would a senior in high school always be reading medical journals? Then there were his habitual appearances down by the river every Friday night, just like the night she almost hit him - not to mention his odd habit of disappearing there, with no place and no reason to hide! Overtaken by a sense of curiosity that she just can't seem to shake, Quinn finds herself trying to figure out exactly what is going on with him. When he starts to show up in her dreams, she can't decide if her curiosity has become too much of an obsession ... or if there is something ... more. Finally it becomes clear that the answers she seeks might only come from finding out what is happening at the river. But on the night Quinn decides to follow him, her very new mystery draws her fatefully to a very old mystery. To a discovery she thought could only exist in a fairy tale. Uh oh, Quinn. 1st Period History will never be the same! In the Dusk Gate Chronicles, you'll meet characters who find their way straight into your heart, on a journey you'll long to join. Formatting in Word

I've been getting quite a few questions about formatting lately. Even I have to admit, it can be a tricky sucker. For many years (many, many), I've dealt with formatting documents in Word and various other word processing software, including teaching people how to format. One key thing that few realize is that every key stroke you make adds code to your document. Now in the old days, that was extremely important because we had very little space to save documents. So you didn't want your document bloated with unwanted code.
For instance, many people like to hit the space bar 5 times to indent a line. Big no no and one of my absolute pet peeves. Use the tab key. One code versus five codes. Saves space and makes it neat and tidy. Also, with trying to line text up with the space bar, printing becomes an issue. The text might appear straight on the screen, but sometimes when you print, it is a wavy vertical line down the page. Some letters take up less space on a line than others, i.e. a W takes up more room than an I, causing the text to shift on a line. If you don't use a code such as a tab to line it up, then it's not necessarily going to be straight.
Now today with our huge hard drives and big flash drives, we have a ton of storage space and saving documents from bloat took a back seat. Of course, many people are self taught in Word and don't even realize what all the functions and key stroke saving abilities are in Word. Trust me, there are five different ways to do everything and quite a few of them will save you time in the long run!
However, if you are going to load a document into a Kindle format, then you want to have as small a document as possible because of download size. You want your reader to have the smallest possible file size. For Kindle formatting you especially have to use the functions of Word. For instance, to indent a line, you need to use the Format, Paragraph, Indent function rather than a tab or spaces. You also need to turn off page numbering. An ebook is a flowing document that shifts with all the different screen sizes out there...what is on page 35 for one reader is on page 20 for another, becasue people can re-size text and some are reading on a tablet, some on a computer. Another tip is to have a consistent font. Different font colors are really not a good idea as colors appear different on different systems.
There's a lot to consider when formatting a document, but it's nothing you can't handle. If you get in a bind or have a question, just let me know!

Indie Author Book Hop

Welcome to the Indie Author Blog Hop!June 13 - June 19

In America we admire independence, but unfortunately, for some reason, there is a stigma that attaches to authors who publish their own work. Which is odd to me because all authors are self-publishers at the beginning of their careers. (Or they never publish.) So this post is a celebration of independent authors who have had the courage to publish their own work.

To celebrate Indie Authors I have 3 Giveaways to offer you!

1. A signed copy of Vengeance of the Wolf (Domestic Only -- to be shipped by Author)

Vengeance of the Wolf Detective John Yardley and FBI agent, Frank Williams are on a quest. Awaiting them are unbelievable terrors, chilling twists and turns, and a scope of destruction that they would never have believed possible.

Write What You Know

Everyone is always saying, "You should write what you know." But what is that? People know a ton of information and can look up gobs more on the Internet. I suppose most of the information we know is quite useless or so common that everyone already is aware of it. So that leaves us with the question, What should we write about?

For me, I am most familiar with MS Word (and other MS software), since I taught adults to use the products for many years; I have excellent editing skills honed from years of working in the legal field; and I'm an avid reader. So should I give tips on using MS Word? Should I offer editing services? Or should I complete book reviews for your edification?

I've only been blogging for a few month, and this has been very much a work in progress. I like to help indie authors, so I began by featuring various authors and their books that appealed to me. I don't have the time to read right now due to my extreme schedule finishing my second novel, and, well, life, so I haven't completed many reviews. Instead, I have been reviewing books that I've read over the years. And I have began offering my editing skills (cheaply too, if I do say so myself).

So I've come to the decision to focus this blog on those three faucets, that to me are irrevocably intertwined: working in MS Word, editing, and reviews/features of books that appeal to me. Of course, I'll have to add in a little twist here and there, because that's just me. I hope you enjoy.
