BOOKS FOR FANS OF CRIMSON PEAK

Best described as a 20th Century Gothic Romance, Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak follows aspiring aristocratic author Edith Cushing as she falls madly in love with the penniless Thomas Sharpe.  Whisked away to his dilapidated estate, Edith soon learns that not all is as it appears to be when ghostly apparitions begin to haunt the corridors of Allerdale Hall.  With nightmares lurking around every corner, a house that seeps blood red clay from every orifice, and a spellbinding cast of characters, Crimson Peak is shaping up to be one of the best films of the year.  Below are a combination of classic and contemporary Gothic inspired titles that embody a similar atmosphere to Guillermo del Toro’s haunting and phantasmagorical cinematic creation.  If you enjoyed the film and want to know what to read next, then this list is a great place to start.

Delia’s Shadow by Jaime Lee Moyer

This House is Haunted by John Boyne

The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Ward Radcliffe

The Silence of Ghosts by Jonathan Aycliffe

The Damned by Andrew Pyper

The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins

The Witch of Painted Sorrows by M.J. Rose

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier

Beware what lies in the halls of Crimson Peak…

And, even if you aren’t the biggest horror fan, there’s always Tom Hiddleston’s charming smile to comfort you if you get too scared.

As a kid I decided that a Canadian accent doesn’t sound tough. I thought guys should sound like Marlon Brando. So now I have a phony accent that I can’t shake, so it’s not phony anymore.

“Kids love black holes the way they love T-Rex. And I think it’s because each of these entities can eat you. And anything that eats you, you give your highest respect.”

Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on
it. I loved it. I answer all my children’s letters — sometimes very
hastily — but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a
picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, ‘Dear Jim: I loved your card.’
Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, ‘Jim loved your
card so much he ate it.’ That to me was one of the highest compliments
I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice
Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it.
