Today in ‘Shit, lets be Satan.’
I’m a catholic christian but this made more sense than some of the stuff in the bible does!
I don’t usually post things like this on my blog but I thought it’d be important for people to know that:
Satanists DO NOT worship Satan. “Satan” is the latin root for “the one whom opposes”. The name was purposlly chosen to piss off Christians. Satanists are opposed to everything religious, which means that they do not believe in God, therefore, they do not believe in Satan either. The misconceptions of Satanism come from the movies where you see people sacrificing goats and all that stuff, but it is not true. I have read the Satanic Bible. I can assure you that they do not believe in anything religious.
Well, I mean, sort of. There are multiple kinds of Satanisms. There’s LaVeyan Satanism, which is what this post is discussing - the quotation is from The Satanic Bible by Anton LaVey which is absolutely about opposing Christianity, walking the Left-Hand Path, worshipping oneself, all of the rules and sins mentioned above… And honestly it’s a fantastic read, a bit too sexual at times but otherwise I love it a lot.
But there’s also theistic Satanism, which does worship Satan as a deity. Some theistic Satanists worship Satan from the perspective of Christianity, where Satan is a figure of supreme evil, and others worship ha-Shatan, the figure from a Jewish perspective, who is more of a judge and opponent, not necessarily evil. Yes a lot of the goat sacrificing and stuff is media sensationalizm, but there are people who worship Satan as their religion.
Neither “kind” of Satanism is better or worse than the other, and I’m sure there are even more kinds than the two I mention. It’s great to be interested in LaVeyan Satanism but let’s not shove the theistic Satanists under the bus for it…
Also, Satan isn’t a Latin root at all. In fact, the FIRST place the word is found in Latin is in the Vulgate Bible (and later Christian Latin texts), as a Latinization of the Koine Greek version of the HEBREW root Shatan, which means, yes, adversary. It’s not native to either Latin or Greek, but was adapted from the Hebrew to for the Bible.
And if we get clear back that far then we get into other odd biblical theories, like the one that Lucifer, the Serpent in the Garden of Eden, and Satan/Shatan may be completely different beings and so on….
