...and they laughed...and smoked ?

My list crowded the small slip of paper I clutched. Stopping to draw a line through another completed task, I paused...(yes, I write lists)
Yesterday, I attended two meetings in Jefferson, Texas.
This morning I finished errands in Longview, Texas...early...and here I sat at a doctor's appointment in Marshall, Texas at 10:30 am.
Tomorrow I am thankful for a book signing in Tyler, Texas, at Caffe Tazza from 2-6 pm, and the following day, Sunday, I attend church,in Karnack, Texas, attend a pastor search committee meeting, go home and have birhday cake and gifts (it's my husband's birthday), and be in Waskom, Texas at the library at 2pm... for my friend Patty Wiseman's book launching party, and book signing from 2-4 pm!
Love these busy days!
It didn't take long to decide on carry out and bringing lunch home for Mom and myself. (I am her caretaker. She is 84 yrs. old, she can't drive, and can't hear very well, but can that lady ever cook!)
We both enjoy seafood, and after the doctor appointment, I swung over to the mall and ordered two dinners of fried jumbo shrimp to go, called Mom, said I was bringing a surprise home... and for her not to fix lunch.
How much happiness can you stand? A shrimp dinner is the ultimate for us!!!
I talked a mile a minute to other customers, and within five minutes, my order was ready.
Sailing out the door at the mall, I noticed a group in their early 20's. All were laughing and talking and clearly having a great moment, when I suddenly saw the cigarette they each held in their hand.
This placed me in total shock. I stared, trying to decide what to do.
If I approached them and told them my opinion about smoking, they probably wouldn't pay any attention to me. I could easily be told to "mind your business."
I slowed my walk past the group and my heart ached. They appeared so happy.
I wanted to tell them about my brother-in-law. He recently was diagnosed with throat cancer. Surgeons removed, in several hours, the cancer from his throat. They also removed a spot the size of a quarter from the back of his tongue, and the little flap that hangs down your throat. He can't swallow anything, it hurts too bad. He lost over 30 lbs. He now has a feeding tube.
No, he does not smoke cigerettes anymore. He has to learn how to swallow. If he swallows wrong, the fluid will go straight to his lungs and he could drown.
A therapist comes to his house and teaches him how to strengthen his throat muscles.
My sister uses the blender and feeds him 6 times a day, through his feeding tube. Even his pain pills have to be smashed and liquified. My sister cares for him 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and he will tell you he couldn't make it without God and her.
He is improving. He recently swallowed a whole pain pill, completely intact. They still have to add a thickener to his blended food, so it doesn't slide down his throat to his lungs.
We all thank God he survived the surgery. So does he.
You probably know someone like him in your own family. He is the one that is always there to help, he loves to cook on his grill and invite friends over, and yes, he belives in tithing at church.
A doctor once told me that with each cigarette you smoke, a tiny layer of lung tissue dissolves in decay. Those happy, light-hearted young people would not think that could ever happen to them.
Reality has a way of jumping at us. I treasure scripture from my Bible to make sense of everything.
Matthew 26:41, "Watch and pray, that you enter not into temptation, the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
I pray you are not drawn into the programmed commercials by all forms of media...to further their income at your own risk. Personally, I'd rather not smoke.

Stay True To Form

I heard the fabric rip as I walked past the climbing rose bush. Several willowy branchs of rose buds and thorns protruded the lattice openings. One stuck in the material of a side pocket on my favorite pair of jeans.
How did that happen? Frowning, I stopped and carefully grasped the thin branch with my finger tips and got stuck again. Ouch! Another look at the culprit, and I gently held on to a few tiny leaves, managing to pull and remove the entire object from my clothes.
A quick examination of the jagged tear proved the damage wasn't so bad after all.
I can sew this. Memories of handmade quilts I had made years ago, flooded my mind. I pictured  all the hours of tiny stitches that were all uniform and double knotted to ensure years of service in the quilts.
My fingers twitched as I recalled each one I'd made by hand.
Is that reflex or anticipation? I had to smile at the thought.
I went inside my house and climbed a set of stairs making my way to the sewing room. Rummaging through countless boxes, I finally spotted the package of self-threading sewing needles. Thread was next, and I selected the right color from many spools I had kept from quilting days.
Something flashed from the box and landed on the floor.
It was a two by three inch bluejean iron-on patch.
Yes, the repair could be made quicker than sewing, but would it last very long? Probably not. The edges would eventually ruffle each time the garment went through a cycle in the washer and dryer.
I continued my original plan and finished mending with needle and thread.
How often is life like that?
You set out on one course only to have something distract you. Stay true to yourself, your beliefs, and your convictions.
Hebrews 12:13 "And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way, but let it rather be healed."

Give Thanks!

I had a busy and fun Monday putting flyers out with Patty Wiseman in Daingerfield, Texas  for our book signing with Ann Everett and Eddie Hancock II, on Friday, May 25, 2012. Such friendly people all over the town! Everyone we asked about placing a flyer in their business window, were happy to talk to us. We placed a lot of flyers!
The book signing will be at a wonderful shop called 'Something Special by Nan & Jan' at 111 Coffey Street, Daingerfield, Texas 75638 from 10 am until 2 pm. May 25, 2012.
Yes, I will shop there also. Won't be able to resist! It is a boutique that is full to the brim of great finds; you have to stop and look carefully to not miss anything.
Frances Kersey lives in Daingerfield and treated us to an awesome lunch. What a great visit with friends! :)
Ever notice how Christian friends have so much to talk about and bounce ideas around, happy to share opinions and encourage each other? That is the kind of day we had, and it went on for hours!
I enjoy treating others as I want to be treated.
Sometimes it doesn't work out like that. Sometimes we run across people who would never help anyone. Sometimes they are self centered and focus on promoting themselves first. Sometimes they take from us, use what they can and go on their way.
How sad! They don't know what they are missing!
I pray for them and ask for Christians to be placed in their pathways. After enough encounters with being treated well, they have to notice and feel the difference!
As for me, I give thanks for days such as I have experienced today. I give thanks for the doors God is opening for me and the opportunities offered to me.
No, pretentious people won't get me down. I have too much to be thankful for!
Psalms 118:29 O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good; and His mercy endures forever.

God Does Provide!

In the middle of book signings and writing the next novel, I was finally scheduled for a long needed total knee replacement surgery on my right knee. It has been six weeks of healing and therapy, since that day in late February. Needless to say, I cannot drive yet.

Roles are now reversed. I am caregiver to my 85 year old mother, who cannot drive, and has a balance problem due to inner ear issues.

She moved in my home, and is now taking care of me. Cooking, washing clothes, etc., you name it - she does it.

Yesterday, web worms had three sudden nests in my apricot tree. Mom walked to the garage, found a long pole, tied newspaper on one end, and burned the webs to a crisp.

When she had to have an emergency root canal at the dentist, my friend Patty Wiseman took her there and helped Mom, comforting her during a bout of dizziness.

Patty drove Mom with my ledger, out of town, to drop off my tax information to be prepared for IRS. Hopefully, that will be completed before April 15, or get an extension. I will not worry. It is in God's hands.

Patty also takes my books and poster with her to book signings I cannot attend, and sells mine right beside her's.

My son, Jeff, and his wife Jannis, have gone above and beyond in helping. Coming from out of town for quick weekend visits - three in a row - buying groceries, cooking meals to put in freezer, sweeping, etc.; Jannis even stayed day and night with me at the hospital while I was so nauseated.

My son Mike, and his wife Katheryn, were so encouraging to me with their visits. She could not get off work, but one day Mike had to. He brought me a shower chair from a medical supplier that my doctor had written a prescription for. Mike took Mom to buy groceries after Jeff and Jannis had to leave, and has been great in helping me with tasks here.

Virginia Summers and Ann Harliss have also taken Mom to town for errands.

Barbara Miller has been my driver to the doctor. Her van has room for my leg; it is still swollen and bent, though not as bent. It is not straight but exercises in therapy are stretching muscles, and it's getting there!

Also thanks to Jan and Mead Bramlett for taking my trash off every week.

All of these family members and friends are such a big blessing to me! I have learned to turn everything over to God, and I enjoy not going through the "what if" scenarios.

Just last night I had to schedule another doctor appointment and was thinking of who to call, when my phone rang. It was my friend, Sandra Colley, offering to take me anywhere I needed to go. Yes, we scheduled the date and time of this appointment!

God does provide! I give Him all the Glory! No matter what your situation is, He will be there for you, too. The power of prayer is so strong, and I thank everyone for their prayers!
