October – A Month of Awareness

Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence Awareness

The Pink and Purple ribbon, representing Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. After finding the strength to move on from over a decade of physical and emotional abuse from the hands of an ex-boyfriend, I decided to share my story of survival in my co-authored book, "Pursuing Your Destiny"; where I emerge from a victim to a victor of domestic violence.

For years I hid the scars of this painful relationship from co-workers and friends – even family. Then I came across the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence site, and realized – I would never be able to leave unless I found the confidence and acceptance of inner strength to finally walk away  -  for good.

There is no secret to the suffering domestic violence brings, but awareness of one's ability to move forward with peace and understanding will always reign over ignorance and judgment.

A Visit to the 9/11 Memorial – A Decade Later

After years of healing after the tragedy of September 11, I made the conscious decision to visit the 9/11 Memorial, where the Towers once stood.

My husband and I met with Alex, a curator for the Memorial and presented her with the original photo I had taken of the Towers just days before the attack, along with our book, "Pursuing Your Destiny".  As promised, Alex gave us a pass to visit the site. We needed to act quickly; the rain clouds began rolling in and I wasn't going to miss this opportunity.

Our guest passes enabled us to get us past the visitors standing in line, and by 1:15pm we were at the entrance of the memorial. Just then, the sky opened and it began to pour.

As I beheld the beautifully engraved names of friends who perished a decade ago, my heart began to beat uncontrollably. Tears of sorrow flowed down my cheeks as I ran my fingers across their names. "Eileen…Ivan…Robert…Ryan," I sobbed. I stood there, in a place I had not been in ten years, but at a place of peace. It was finally time to move on.

BBC RadioToday I appeared on BBC Radio for interview hosted by Richard Cartridge, Radio Solent. In all the times I've been asked to tell my story, it was comforting to hear others tell their story as well.

My interview with Mr. Cartridge begins around the 15:00 mark. A BIG thank you to BBC Radio for giving me the opportunity for my voice to be heard around the world.

Speaking for the first time on a 9/11 Anniversary…

Elm Ridge MemorialAs a professional speaker I've had the opportunity to share my message of hope, peace and awareness with audiences around the world. One day of the year of which I never professionally speak is on the anniversary of 9/11/01. As we approach the 10th anniversary of the tragedy, however, I've made the conscious decision to break the silence.

Cultivating, Creating, Discovering…

Pursuing Your Destiny

Pursuing Your Destiny - How to Overcome Adversity and Achieve Your Dreams

In the last few months I've engulfed myself into spirituality, continuously in search of a way to "discover" enlightenment by reading books such as "Zen Miracles," by Brenda Shoshanna and,"The Heart of the Buddha's Teaching," by Thich Nhat Hanh, just to name a few. What I did discover, however, is that all the content in the world will never amount to the wealth of knowledge obtained by one's own life experience. Read more…
