Book 2 in the Cherokee Series, ‘Losing St. Christopher’ Due Out in May!
In 1953, Albert Speer, Germany’s Minister of Armaments & War Production during World War II, wrote from a prison cell in Nuremburg, that study of the treatment and eradication of the American Indian was an element in the plan for the final solution. Speer, Hitler, and others in the Third Reich who administered the Nazi Holocaust, had looked to the Indian Removal Act of 1830, and the subsequent actions of the United States Government, as a blueprint for the annihilation of a people, a culture, and a way of life.
In Losing St. Christopher, Totsuhwa, the revered shaman of the Cherokee Nation, struggles against the assimilation of his people into the white world of men he sees as invaders. The colonists, along with Cherokee who are trying to bridge both worlds, see him as a barbarous threat. When Totsuhwa’s visions show him the outcome, it is as black as his deep set haunting eyes. Chancellor, his son, takes a white wife following study at a missionary school and the shaman’s fears seem realized. Conflicts between cultures and within the family erupt when Totsuhwa’s only grandchild is forced onto the Trail of Tears. In the chase that follows, an estranged love fights to stem the ugly flow of racism that is moving in two directions.
“History is written by the victorious, but when almost forgotten historical characters are brought to life, and their stories told, they are preserved through the ages, and in this preservation David-Michael Harding has succeeded.”

Not the Super Bowl, But I Got a Ring!
Seeing all the Super Bowl traffic made me pause and rummage through some old pictures… In ’73-’76 I played a few unremarkable years for the perennial STC (Bi-State) Champion red & white Wolverines of Waverly. Eddie Richardson, Billy Bostwick, and David Scrivener had all the talent, speed, and strength. But it was a great group of young men. Somewhere in the ’70s we used to watch the big guys in the semi-pro leagues play in the venerable Waverly Memorial Stadium and in Binghamton, NY. After playing a few later seasons at the unique ‘Dannemora State University’ (Class of ’96), it was nice to play with rules again! So over 20 years after watching them play, I got in a few seasons with the semi-pro Binghamton Jets. It was a thrill and I played with some great athletes – Tioga County’s Wayne Aman was one of them, until I blew out one knee and Wayne two. In 1997 we won the Empire League title and the NYS Championship (I think this picture was in ’97). I’ve since given the ring to my grandson, but I still own the memories. I’m a Giant fan to the core, but “Thank you, Jets!” And let’s go Seattle (sticking with the NFC)!!

Happy New Year!
I’ve waited 2 years to pop the cork, but with the recent release of The Cats of Savone, Cherokee Talisman continuing to pick up traction in anticipation of the sequel, Losing St. Christopher due out soon, and How Angels Die continually surprising me in the European markets, it’s been a great year and I’m ready to celebrate. I have to give Casa Larga Winery a plug. Located in Fairport, NY their wines are fantastic – especially their Cabernet. Thank you all for a great year and your continued support.

Merry Christmas!
I don’t want to brag here, but I think I’ve gotten the best gift an historical fiction writer could receive!
My great grandfather (Alonzo Harding) served with Company I of the 5th NY Cavalry, during the Civil War. War department records indicate he saw intense action through Virginia until his regiment was forced marched west into the Shenandoah Valley in early 1865. Alonzo, just twenty years old, was eventually wounded so badly he was transported back to Washington and admitted to Lincoln Hospital. His Discharge Papers referencing ‘surgically disability,’ stamped March 9th, 1865, were recently uncovered.
Kate was able to locate a stunning antique frame circa 1860. With the help of the local museum curators, the document has been mounted in this unique frame (astounding in its own right) beneath UV protective museum glass – front and back, so the reverse of the document can also be viewed. It is an amazing piece, remarkable piece of Americana, and priceless addition to my family’s history.
Christmas is about family, as we all recognize. This piece reminds me to remember and recognize all those that have gone before us who have helped shape us into who and what we are, or labored in our corner of the world in ways big and small in order for us to enjoy the benefits and liberties we so often take for granted.

FLASHBACK! Where were you in early November 1999?
Cabaret (musical) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

FLASHBACK! Where were you in early November 1999? I hope you were one of the lucky ones who could get a ticket to one of the sold-out shows of Cabaret, presented by the Elmira Little Theater at the Clemens Center in Elmira, NY. That’s your author in the back row 2nd from the left with the battered eye – compliments of a pair of Nazi boots as they took Berlin and my girl! It was a great show with a very special cast and crew. If ever there was a true ensemble production – this was it. As I recall, our show was also the initial production in the newly renovated Clemens Center.
