Florida Writers Association Award!

fwa-logo-1Good afternoon, FB Team & friends!  I’ve just returned from a great conference presented by the Florida Writers Association.  My feature length screenplay, St. Aldens, which readers (YOU!) selected from The Cats of Savone Collection , had been selected as a Finalist in the prestigious Royal Palm Literary Awards.  But alas, a bridesmaid not a brirpla_2ndpl_badgede.  *:) happy

St. Aldens earned the 2nd Place Award and while there is always disappointment at not ‘winning,’ I know the script outpaced countless others.  I’ll take my runner up award this year, continue to work on marketing the two newest novels, The New Illuminati & Return to Power , as well as another novel already underway, AND another screenplay.  Hopefully, I’ll be back in the Finals next year with enough for that last push!  Thanks for all your continuing support!

This is me on the big screen at the ceremony!

Check out this amazing dessert served at the banquet.  The Florida Writers Association is truly an amazing organization.

INADVERTENT BOOST FROM BRANGELINA!

brangelina-brangelina-30322330-1280-800I don’t wish what Pitt & Jolie are going through on anyone, but their exchanges gave my new book, The New Illuminati , a boost via the search engines with their references to ‘Illuminati.’ Coupled with the ‘thank you’ give-away, we reached the top 5% in the Free Kindle store. To everyone who has left thank you messages for the freebie, “You are most welcome! Enjoy!”

The Breakthrough Continues!

My screenplay for the feature film, St. Alden’s, has been selected as a finalist for the prestigious Royal Palm Literary Awards. If it wins, our chance of production goes up dramatically (think street cred & professional validation of the writing). Thanks to everyone who has supported me along the way. If you haven’t visited my FB writer’s page, please do. I don’t inundate you with posts – promise! If St. Alden’s makes it to the silver screen I think there may be fierce competition between the Kardashian sisters and the back stabbers of Downton Abbey as to who gets the roles of the wolves!

If I Had to Sing for my Supper, I’d Starve!

There are street musicians throughout Madrid.  Some are fantastic and others skipped some lessons.  I dropped euros in everybody’s open case or tin cup.  They were all fun to chat with whether we completely understood one another’s language or not.  Music is universal, right?  This duo in the Plaza de Mayor were great!  They sang songs in the language they heard the people (purses & wallets) nearest them speaking.  They may not have known WHAT they were were singing, but they had songs in German, French, Italian, English, and something else I didn’t recognize.  Quite the entrepreneurs!   The funny part is they only new 2 or 3 songs in each language.  For Americans they did Kansas’, “Dust in the Wind,” and Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water!”  They may have a limited repertoire, but they choose a couple classics.  I sat in for a while and showed them some old blues riffs.  Great fun, but I only made one euro which I promptly invested in a very good beer & a tapa!  “Salute!”

Ancient Artifacts I Found in Spain!

I found a couple things in Spain, we don’t see in the United States much anymore.  Both were surprises in their own way.  The 1st are cigarette machines. (PIC 1)  In every restaurant, diner, cafe, store, etc.  Sometimes two machines.  An awful lot of smokers which stands in sharp contrast to much healthier diets, fresh food, and trimmer waistlines.  #2 – public pay telephones. (PIC 2).  I don’t think I could find one in Tampa if I had to.  Maybe they’re relics over there, but they still work and still get used.  And yes, I still checked the coin return slots as I went by.   Some things don’t change, I guess.  *:) happyCig Machine Pay Phone

Day Hiking in Barcelona!

I spent some time in Barcelona, Spain recently.  If you ever go, be certain to visit Sagrada Familia (a church that has taken almost 150 yrs to build and it’s not done yet!).  Like Sagrada FamiliaParc Quell was designed by Fransico Goya.  Other  interesting sites were Palau de la Música where I saw a flamenco show and Hospital de Sant Pau .   Lastly, If you’re up to it, hike the goat trail – not the domesticated wide and winding manicured trail – 4000 ft up to the Montserrat Monastery.  It’s an investment of a couple hrs w/ no shortage of scratches & nicks, but worth it.  Be sure to pack water – there’s no tourist traps on this hike!

The View from Hemingway’s Seat @ Plaza de Toros, Madrid, SPAIN

May 2, 2016Plaza de Toros

May 2nd of each year marks the Corrida Goyesca, a special bullfight held in Madrid‘s famous Plaza de Toros.  It commemorates the work of artist, Francisco Goya.  I was fortunate to get front row seats behind the matadors where Hemingway famously sat on many occasions.  Regardless of your sentiments toward bull fighting, I was in awe of the history, art, and spectacle. One cannot help but admire the athletic prowess of the men that wield the capes as their only defense in front of the raging toros.
