Went to the American Girl Store today since we were nearby one for a comic...
Went to the American Girl Store today since we were nearby one for a comic convention and it was awesome to see happy black girls with Gabriela. Like in our criticism of things (cheaper packaging, ugh another dancer!, she looks like a retired Truly Me doll) we forget how important representation is for little girls. These girls couldn’t care less about packaging or even if she was the same mold as the Truly Me doll all they saw was a girl that looks like them that was being celebrated and I couldn’t stop smiling in that store. You know that clear my acne, cured my depression meme? It was exactly like that. There were older black girls that were getting her, there was a birthday girl that was just clutching Gabriela with the biggest smile on her face. Everyone was there for Gabriela. I saw so many little girls absolutely in love with Gabriela. I know I should still be able to criticize certain aspects of Gabriela like her cheap packaging, but I just think about those girls and I can’t. I have to actually say well done, American Girl. I’m not saying you can’t criticize, I just mean that there are happy black girls out there hugging their Gabriela and that is very important.
