HOW I EASED MY PTSD IN FIVE NOT-SO-SIMPLE STEPS
When I first learned about PTSD, I was 25 years old and in my first year as a doctoral student in the Michigan State University Neuroscience Program. I read that rape and abuse can lead to PTSD and the symptoms read like a definition of my life. I realized that I’d been living with PTSD for over eight years. I finally felt like maybe I could get help—that there wasn’t just something inherently wrong with me. Until then, I didn’t even recognize that my rape and abuse were “traumatic events” in my life. I thought that’s just what happens to people and how I “let it” affect my life was my own failure to stop dwelling in the past. After years of alcoholism, drug addiction, eating disorders, suicide attempts, self-loathing, self-blame, and panic, I finally sought professional help and devoted the remainder of my dissertation research to studying the effects of trauma on the brain. The first step in my healing process was to acknowledge that what happened to me had a profound impact on my life and to call it what it was—sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and rape. After that, I embarked on a whirlwind of therapy, support groups, medication, mindfulness, neurofeedback, you-name-it, and after several years of searching for answers and for healing, I can look back to see what really helped me.
