Countdown to a Small Town July 4th Parade

The Fourth of July Fun Continues: Staking a Spot for the Parade

Kids need seats too…

When I set my summer love story, LOVE DELIVERED, in a small town, I knew it had to have a July 4thscene. In my hometown of Catonsville, MD, the parade is such a big deal, that people actually stake their spots along the 1.1-mile route two weeks in advance.
Some people didn't believe that residents would set out chairs that far in advance. Here's proof!    From now until parade day, I’ll be posting pics sent from Catonsville residents, about the growing lineup of chairs.  Remember to send your photos to joya@joyafields.com

Stake Your Spot Early For July 4th Parade!

I have proof!    These next few days, I’ll be posting pics sent from Catonsville residents, about the growing lineup of chairs. Here are the first two photos. Enjoy! Remember to send your photos to joya@joyafields.com
Thanks to Debbie Hardee Kingsbury who sent this pic from last July 4th.  "My brother in law made this , they called her Shirley! Poor Shirley and her dog kept getting moved from one place to another in the week or so before the 4th of July," she said. We spotted 2012 Shirley yesterday around 5 p.m. but ten minutes later, Shirley was gone. Have you seen "Shirley?"

Thanks to Erica F. for this photo of someone who wants to be in the swing of things while they watch the parade. (Note the yellow "caution" tape. Another way to stake your spot.)

Thanks for sharing your photos. Keep ‘em coming and stop back every day between now and July 4thto see the “lawn chair updates.” Click Here for Joya's Amazon Author Page

In this snippet from LOVE DELIVERED, my recently-released novella, it’s Fourth of July and Pete and Bianca are ready to celebrate.    She pulled into his driveway and parked her car on the grass as he instructed. Looking up, she spotted him carrying cases of sports drinks out his front door. She smiled, and her whole body warmed at the sight of him. The muscles in his tanned arms bunched and flexed as he set the drinks on a cooler at the bottom of the steps.    He spotted her and jogged to her car with a wide smile on his face. Her heart skipped a beat.

An Almost Kiss on the Front Porch Swing #SixSunday

Happy Father’s Day!!   Welcome to Six Sentence Sunday: Where writers share six sentences from their published or unpublished books.    In this snippet, from LOVE DELIVERED, it’s a hot summer day and Pete and Bianca finally find time to sit on the front swing with a cool glass of iced tea.
“You look beautiful,” Pete whispered, turning to face her.     She gazed into his blue eyes, and her pulse kicked into high gear. “Thanks,” she said. Then she frowned and looked down at her spackle-covered shirt and cut-off jean shorts. She tugged a piece of spackle from her shorts.     He gently lifted her chin with his fingers.

Making Love in a Thunderstorm #sixsunday

Welcome to Six Sentence Sunday: Where writers share six sentences from their published or unpublished books.
What is it about a thunderstorm? So electric, so passionate. A great background for making love. There's a storm brewing (in more than one way) in these six sentences from my debut novel, BENEATH THE SURFACE.

The search might take longer without Brooke, but it could be done.    Rain beat strong and heavy against the bedroom window panes. Brooke moaned in her sleep and pressed against him. No, she wouldn’t admit she needed protection. But he had to admit it for both of them. For now, he buried his head in her hair, and let himself fall asleep to the soft fruity smell of her shampoo.

A trip to Flagler Beach, FL! Visit the pub that inspired the restaurant in Beneath the Surface!

Good thing I don't live closer, or I might
visit Finn's every day for lunch. Here's the
rooftop deck. Can you hear the waves?    A lot of authors visit fun places, and include those places in their books. In my debut novel BENEATH THE SURFACE, Garrett’s family owns a pizzeria with a rooftop dining area that takes Brooke’s breath away.   If you’ve read BENEATH THE SURFACE, the scene takes place on pages 68 through 77.   The real-life inspiration for this restaurant is the rooftop view from Finn’s Beachside Pub in Flagler Beach, FL.Just last week, I visited Finn’s again. Grant, the manager, welcomed us with open arms, the staff was charming, and the food was great. Finn’s isn’t a pizzeria, but you'll find all sorts of delicious menu items.   If you’re in Flagler Beach, be sure to take in one of the best ocean views in town at Finn’s…who knows, maybe you’ll spot Garrett and Brooke there. One glance at these pictures and you'll see why I fell in love with this place and had to use it in a story. Check out Finn's website for more information: http://www.finnsflagler.com/ If you dine on the rooftop, this awesome table
overlooking the Atlantic Ocean could be
yours. The tables and chairs aren't handmade
like the ones in Beneath the Surface, but
they sure do offer a magnificent view.

When Bad Guys Prey on Good Intentioned People #SixSunday

Welcome to Six Sentence Sunday: Where writers share six sentences from their published or unpublished books.
In this snippet from my debut novel BENEATH THE SURFACE, an elderly man has pulled his boat next to Brooke’s, and asks if she’s seen his missing granddaughter. Hard to resist helping someone, isn’t it? But could it cost you your life?
Brooke took the flyer, and her heart pinched at the photo of a happy, girl-next-door-like smile on the teenager’s face. The girl’s dark hair, straight white teeth and giant smile made her wish she could help the man. She stared at the photo and shook her head, then held the flyer out to him.
“No, sorry. I haven’t seen her, or heard about it. I didn’t get a chance to watch the—”

Would You Be Able to Save a Life? #SixSunday

Welcome to Six Sentence Sunday: Where writers share six sentences from their published or unpublished books.    In this snippet from my debut romantic suspense, BENEATH THE SURFACE, Brooke has just witnessed her best friend’s boat explode. What would you do? How would you react?

On shaking legs, she ran to the end of the pier and snatched the emergency life preserver ring. She headed to the edge of the pier amidst a shower of tiny red embers and whispered a heartfelt prayer.   Please be alive.   “Whoa. Let’s take a skiff.” Running footsteps vibrated the dock and she turned as a gray-bearded fisherman grabbed her elbow and pulled her awayfrom the ledge.

Journey to the Bottom of the Ocean #SixSunday

Welcome to Six Sentence Sunday: Where writers share six sentences from their published or unpublished books.
Thanks for stopping by! Today, I'm sharing six sentences from my debut romantic suspense novel, BENEATH THE SURFACE. Dive into the ocean with Brooke, who is an amputee. She hasn't been scuba diving since she lost most of her leg two years ago. She's about to find out how much she's missed it.

Three minutes later, Brooke found herself surrounded by bubbles as she bled off some of the air in her buoyancy compensator and descended. She shut her eyes and the water caressed her skin. Its coolness wrapped around her and settled her nerves.    She missed being in the water more than she’d realized. The fact that she couldn’t flutter kick— she’d end up going sideways—wasn’t a problem. She quickly discovered that pressing her thighs together and doing a butterfly kick worked just as well as fluttering and wasn’t nearly as awkward as she’d expected.
