B & N Reads: 5 Cuban American Novelists You Should be Reading

One of the most magical aspects of literature and art in general is that combination of attitudes and backgrounds that occurs in your head when you read something written by a member of another culture—which is even more powerful when the writer is combining different experiences themselves. The Cuban-American diaspora in America has influenced every aspect of our culture, from food, to music, to literature, birthing stories flavored with Cuban-specific experience that make their tales unique. The work of these five Cuban-American writers represents some of the best work coming out of that community today.

Sleuthsayers Interview

I don’t remember how I met Alex, but when we did meet, over Twitter, we clicked immediately. We both wrote PI novels and shared a love of the Talking Heads and the Replacements. So when he invited me to read at Noir at the Bar (a series I have desperately wanted to be part of for years) I felt like I had finally made it as a mystery writer.

South Florida Sun-Sentinel on BLACKOUT

Segura, a former South Florida journalist, knows the region well, and he imbues “Blackout” with an insider’s view, as well as familiar scenes such as Vizcaya, the Biltmore Hotel, LeJeune Road and the restaurant Islas Canarias. Although “Blackout” occasionally goes over the top with its action, Segura keeps it believable. It is, after all, Miami. Segura is just what South Florida crime fiction needed.
