Ink Inspired: The Story Behind the Story

With the first full length Montgomery Ink novel set to release in a month, I thought I’d go back and talk a little bit about what brought about the series. Delicate Ink is book 1 in the series and had always been in my mind as such. I actually hadn’t planned on writing prequels, but ended doing two because opportunities and characters that wouldn’t shut up. So how did Ink Inspired come about?

Well it all started with a phone call. RG Alexander called me and asked me to be part of Midnight Ink. I said yes before they even explained the rest of it. She said New Orleans and tattoos. What more did I need? You see, since RT 2014 was going to be in New Orleans, we wanted a fun promo book that could be connected to the largest conference ever. (We set a Guinness World Record! LOL)

I told her that I actually had a tattoo/construction worker/sexy series set in Denver coming out in 2014. FYI, we had this conversation Sept 2013. So yes, it was WAY in advance for the series, but I couldn’t help myself. I KNEW the Montgomerys had cousins. In fact, of my original 8 siblings in the series, there are 9+ cousins out there in the world. (Can you say MORE stories if you want them?) From there, Shep Montgomery was born. He was all bad boy, loved the work f*ck (just ask my editor!), and had a soft spot for a certain dainty accountant.

Midnight Ink came out in Nov 2013 and did amazing. I was so freaking happy about it. I got to work with great friends and talented authors and stretch my limits. This was my FIRST contemporary story. And it was my FIRST time working in a world built with others. Each of us had to write about someone in a tattoo shop and have it be cohesive. We also had our characters show up in other books and tease each other. So Shep is actually in 5 of the 8 Midnight Ink novellas!

From there, I wrote another novella in the world (more about that later this week), and got to know more about ink and my love of the Montgomerys.

Midnight Ink and Montgomery Ink Questions Answered

Q: How are Midnight Ink and the Montgomery Ink Series related?

A: Midnight Ink contains a prequel to my series, Montgomery Ink. Midnight Ink is a boxed set that has 7 other authors I love so freaking much. RG Alexander-Rachel Grace asked me to be part of it and I might have cried a bit. Ahem. Anyway, Midnight Ink is a fictional tattoo shop in New Orleans. Each of our books is set in that shop. We have tons of cross over and fun times. My hero, Shep, was in 4 (I think) of the stories since we all decided it would be fun for cross over and Shep was one of the tattoo artists. He was in Jayne Rylon’s novella as well as 3 others (I think. LOL).

Shep is a cousin to the main Montgomery branch. Austin Montgomery is in the novella called Ink Inspired (Shep’s story found in Midnight Ink and on it’s own. Montgomery Ink Book 0.5). Austin is the hero of Book 1 of Montgomery Ink called Delicate Ink (Out Oct 14th and up for pre-order now).

So with MY series, Montgomery Ink, I’m bringing the focus to Denver, rather than New Orleans. That is because the 8 Montgomery siblings live in Denver.

Shep has a subplot in Delicate ink, so you will see him again. And since Shep’s part starts in New Orleans, you will see a couple familiar faces if you read Midnight Ink. Jayne Rylon and Sidney Bristol let me use their characters for a scene. There might be more, so you’ll have to read LOL.

Now, once Delicate Ink starts, I will be in Denver for a few books. (As long as that’s where my characters what to be. So book 1, Delicate Ink, is about Austin and Sierra.

Book 1.5, Forever Ink, is in the HOT INK anthology with Cari Quinn and Sidney Bristol. Forever Ink is about Austin’s apprentice, Callie. Callie is 25 and her hunky hero, Morgan is 40. Tee hee. LOTS of fun there. This comes out Nov 11th and is available for pre-order.

Book 2, Tempting Boundaries, is about Austin’s sister, Miranda, and one of Austin’s best friends, Decker. That comes out Dev 9th and I’ll have a pre-order link for that next week. (BN is up now).

As an aside, I also wrote ANOTHER Midnight Ink novella called Ink Reunited. In EACH of the 8 Midnight Ink novellas, there was one character that showed up all the time. Her name was Sassy. Readers begged and I gave in. She got her HEA with TWO men. LOL So that is called Montgomery Ink 0.6.

He grabbed her wrist, and she started. He inhaled again and growled. “You’re a wolf.” A statement, not a question.

“So astute. I’m surprised you could even tell that with all the liquor running through your system.”

He gave a laugh then took another swig of his drink, the sweet, spicy taste mingling with her scent and causing a dynamic that made him want to bend her over the table and fuck her right there to see how tight she was.

She turned and raised a brow. “Excuse me, why do you think it’s okay to touch me?”

“Maybe because I don’t want you to go.”

She let out a sigh. “Really? That’s the best you can do? That was just pathetic. Though at least you didn’t ask me if it hurt when I fell from heaven or something. God, I swear, you’d think after all these years men would get better at pickup lines.”

“Maybe they just needed you to teach them.” He groaned inwardly at that, knowing that even though he was drunk, it had to be worse than what he had said before.

She threw her head back and laughed. “Oh, honey, that was just bad. But, I’ll tell you what. I’m off my shift in ten minutes. Why don’t I pick up another bottle or two and we can drink our worries away?”

“What type of worries do you have?”

She shook her head and grinned ruefully. “We don’t know each other enough for that, but I will drink with you, and then we’ll see what happens.”

His cock twitched, and he smiled. “Sounds good to me.”

He indulged himself and the rest of the bottle and waited for her to return. When she was done working, she came back with two bottles, one in each hand, and the seductive grin on her face. Hell yeah, this is just what he’d needed, a way to forget and indulge.

She sat down next to him in the booth, not across from him. He wrapped his arm around her shoulder, liking the way she felt against his drunk self.

“Do you know what bottle you’re on now?” she asked, pouring a glass for herself.

“Does it matter?”

“I just don’t want you to die on me.”

“I think I’m a little far away from that, but thanks for worrying.”

“Good.” With that, she tossed back the shot and poured two more. He took a drink, letting it roll over his tongue as he inhaled her scent. She smelled of wolf, but also of something…more? Maybe it was the drink talking. He took her free hand in his and rubbed his fingers along her wrist. Her pulse raced, and he looked down at her eyes, liking the way she looked back at him, eager, wanting.

They finished the second bottle not really talking, just letting their arousal fill the room. The others filed out and the bartender called out, saying he was closing up and Bay knew what to do.

“I guess we should leave?” Adam asked, not wanting to let her go right then.

“My apartment’s upstairs,” she whispered, her words floating over him and making him growl.

“Sounds like a plan to me.” He wanted to get in her quick and hard, and maybe slow and leisurely later. Maybe this quick fuck would drown away the pain more than the alcohol had.
