See the Best of Washington State’s Orcas Island at This Treehouse Airbnb

In northwestern Washington state, poking out of the Salish Sea near Vancouver Island and British Columbia in Canada, lies an archipelago called the San Juan Islands that’s considered to hold some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Pacific Northwest. The second-largest island, Orcas Island, plays host to the tallest peak in the archipelago, Mount Constitution, and has become a must-visit destination for outdoor lovers on the West Coast and beyond.

If you, too, love the outdoors and are planning on visiting Orcas Island to explore its woodsy forests, scenic hills, hidden coves, and rugged coastline, where better to spend the night than a treehouse Airbnb that’s equally as rustic and beautiful as the island itself.

We hope you love this Orcas Island treehouse Airbnb! Just so you know, Matador may collect a small commission from the links on this page if you decide to book a stay. Listed prices are accurate as of the time of publication.

@epic.stays #Airbnb details 👉📍Orcas Island, Forest House #283 in #Washington 🎥 @annsvan #airbnbfinds #pnw #orcasisland #cabinlife #treehousestay ♬ Overcome – Skott

Listed as the Orcas Island, Forest House #283, this stunning one-bedroom treehouse Airbnb is a bit of a local celebrity, having been featured on both the King 5 Seattle Evening News and season 11 of the Animal Planet TV show Treehouse Masters.

For a rustic accommodation, this Orcas Island treehouse Airbnb is flush with amenities, including a fully equipped kitchen with a four-burner gas stove and oven, a washer and dryer, an indoor fireplace, a deep soaking tub, a smart TV with various streaming services, and a gorgeous deck where you can revel in the forest views that surround you. The bedroom has a comfortable queen mattress alongside skylights that allow guests to gaze at the stars.

Two things to keep in mind: Children under 13 are not allowed at the Orcas Island, Forest House #283 due to the deck railings, and because of the treehouse’s location, internet speeds and connection can be spotty. But that just leaves time for forest bathing. Outside the treehouse, exploration beckons, from hiking and sailing to kayaking and fishing. If that’s not your thing, you can also head down to Eastsound where there are plenty of restaurants and shops.

6 International Direct Flights From Chicago, Starting Under $300

One of the biggest benefits of being a Chicago-based traveler is having access to two international airports. Many Chicagoans don’t realize how many airlines and countries have direct flights out of either O’Hare or Midway International Airport.

The direct flights from Chicago below go to six international destinations – and because you don’t have to make any stops, you’ll arrive at your destination as fast as possible. It also means you don’t need to worry about getting stuck in a long customs line and potentially missing a connecting flight.

The two massive airports also have other amenities that frequent flyers will appreciate, including lounges, shopping, dozens of restaurants, and public transportation. If you fly a lot, you’ll definitely want to sign up for TSA Precheck or Clear to skip the long security lines – one of the downsides at large international airports like Chicago’s.

And some of the direct flights from Chicago below don’t have to cost you an arm and a leg, meaning you can travel around the world without breaking the bank. Want to fly to Asia, New Zealand, the Caribbean, or Europe? Below are some of the best and most popular direct flights from Chicago to international destinations. And not all of them cost buckets of money, as long as you can be a bit flexible with the dates you fly. In fact, they start under $300.

Direct Flights from O’Hare International Airport

O’Hare International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world. People from all over the country make connecting flights here, but for Chicagoans, there are plenty of direct international flights.

Reykjavik, Icelandpuffin in iceland - direct flights from chicago

Flight time: 6 hours, 5 minutesAirlines: IcelandairLowest round-trip price in 2023: $599 (May)Where to stay: The best boutique hotels in Reykjavik

Iceland is the closest European destination to Chicago, and the flight flies by compared to other transatlantic flights. Even if you prefer warm destinations, Iceland is a spectacular destination to visit.

Reykjavik is full of friendly people and interesting museums; for such a small country, there’s a lot of history. Reykjavik is also near the famous Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa, and one of the country’s must-see destinations, even if it is a little crowded. Reykjavik is also a great place to stay if you want to take day trips to other parts of the country with or without a car.

When you leave the city, you can see volcanoes, waterfalls, black sand beaches, and glaciers. The country is small, so you can see many popular places (including famous national parks like Thingvellir and Snæfellsjökull in a relatively short time. You can rent cars just for the day or find any number of private and group day trips.

If you travel between September and April, you’ll have a great chance of seeing the northern lights. And since the country has 60 percent of the world’s arctic puffins, you can spot the cute black-and-white birds year-round. It’s a fantastic adventure for a mere six-hour flight.

Flight time: 8 hours, 20 minutesAirlines: Scandinavian AirlinesLowest round-trip price in 2023: $572 (October)Where to stay: The best hotels in Europe for getting cozy this winter

Copenhagen is one of the most popular destinations in Scandinavia, probably because there’s so much to do near the city. Tivoli Gardens is a vintage amusement park where you can let out your inner child on rides like the death-defying Sky Tower. And make sure to spend time walking around Copenhagen (perhaps via a free walking tour) so you can see the colorful buildings and learn about Danish culture.

The city is beautiful and feels like being in a fairytale. But if you want to make all your prince or princess dreams come true, make sure to visit Rosenborg Castle and the Christiansborg Palace. Both are architecturally stunning and have a lot of interesting history.

The flights to Copenhagen are relatively cheap compared to many nonstop flights to Europe from the US, especially during the peak summer season. You can use one of the direct flights from Chicago to Iceland and Denmark for anywhere you want to go in Europe, even if Copenhagen or Reykjavik aren’t your final destinations.

Tokyo, Japandirect flights from chicago - person at bar in tokyo

Flight time: 12 hours, 45 minutesAirlines: ANA, JALLowest round-trip price in 2023: $1,194 (Autumn and winter)Where to stay: 12 Tokyo Airbnbs in the heart of the city

Tokyo was closed to tourism for years due to the COVID-19 pandemic but now seems more popular than ever. It’s a long flight to the city from Chicago, but not having to transfer flights makes the journey seem more doable – especially if you’re the kind of person who can sleep on planes.

Tokyo is one of the best cities in Japan for learning about both modern-day and ancient Japanese culture. From the temples and gardens to the museums and viewing decks atop skyscrapers, you can spend weeks in Tokyo and not experience close to everything the city has to offer. You could also fill a whole trip just seeing the city’s modern attractions, like multi-story gaming arcades and the “Golden Gai:” row after row of tiny, late-night bars that seat only six or eight people.

Tokyo’s restaurant scene is also amazing. Some serve traditional foods like soba, ramen, sushi, and gyoza, some are internationally inspired, and the bakeries have colorful and highly Instagrammable pastries and sweets. Shopping is also very key to Tokyo’s culture, and you’ll find hundreds of stores selling clothing, souvenirs, and toys, plus quirkier stores, especially in the trendy Harajuku District.

Thanks to the country’s bullet trains, you can also easily access the rest of Japan from Tokyo. Other popular destinations in Japan include Kyoto, Hiroshima, Osaka, and Mt. Fuji. You can reach all of them by train in a few hours or less (and cover your tickets with one JR Pass).

Auckland, New Zealanddirect flights from chicago - auckland island and beach

Photo: krug_100/Shutterstock

Flight time: 16 hours, 25 minutesAirlines: Air New ZealandLowest round-trip price in 2023: $1,667 (Autumn and winter)Where to stay: The 6 best luxury resorts in New Zealand

The direct flight from Chicago to Auckland is one of the longest nonstop flights from the midwestern city (and one of the priciest). But if you’re trying to fly halfway around the world, you’ve got to expect that it’ll take a few hours – though you can’t get there any faster than by taking a direct flight. And since it’s a long flight, you’ll get a meal service and have plenty of time to sleep (and adjust to the time change, ideally).

There are a lot of different activities in Auckland, most of which revolve around adventure travel. One of the most well-known is bungee jumping at the Sky Tower, where you’ll jump from the tallest building in the country and fall for 11 seconds. Not an adrenaline lover? Auckland has plenty of museums, parks, and hiking trails, and you can easily take a day trip to Waiheke – Auckland’s “wine island.”

From Auckland, it’s easy to rent a car and explore the country. Auckland is on the northern part of the North Island of New Zealand, and you can easily spend a couple of weeks road-tripping around the country from the city. No matter what you choose to do, spending a few weeks there is worth it after the long (and pricey) flight.

Direct Flights from Midway International Airport

Midway, Chicago’s smaller airport, also has some nonstop flight options, primarily to the Caribbean. But don’t rule it out just because it’s a little older: if you’re looking for warm weather, you’ll find great direct flights from Chicago.

Flight time: 3 hours, 30 minutesAirlines: SouthwestLowest round-trip price in 2023: $129 each way (April)Where to stay: How a Marriott Resort became Cancun’s best spot for mezcal

Cancun is one of the most popular spots for Americans for a warm, relaxing vacation. There are dozens of all-inclusive resorts in Cancun and the surrounding towns like Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen. At these resorts, all your food and drinks are included in the price of your stay, so you just have to relax by the pool or beach and enjoy your vacation. It’s an ideal direct flight from Chicago if you just want an easy, relaxing vacation for a few days.

However, Cancun is also the entry point if you want to go to the increasingly popular Tulum. Tulum is well-known for its beautiful cenotes, great food, and energetic nightlife – not to mention jaw-droppingly beautiful hotels. You can head to Tulum to party on the beach or have a wellness experience and learn to meditate. There’s a lot of variety.

From Cancun or Tulum, you can also visit Chichen Itza, the Mayan ruins dating back to 400 CE. It’s one of the largest archeological sites in the world, and it’s easiest to book a tour that includes transportation and your guide. Some tours also visit cenotes where you can snorkel and swim. There are also plenty of smaller Mayan sites in Cancun and Tulum, including the ruins at Tulum Archaeological Park (which is also near some hip eco-hotels).

Another popular warm-weather destination you can reach on a direct flight from Chicago is Montego Bay, The nonstop flight is only a little longer than the one to Cancun, and Montego Bay also has plenty of all-inclusive resorts.

But if you want a relaxing vacation without an all-inclusive, you’ll find plenty of budget-friendly hotels and unique lodging options. Fortunately, it’s easy to reach gorgeous public beaches, including the beautiful Negril Beach. You can also book Airbnbs easily, some of which are walkable to top beaches.

Montego Bay has a lot of outdoor activities, such as horseback riding, zip lining, golfing, and biking. Or, head to a beach where you can find a lot of water sports, like kayaking, sailing, snorkeling, fishing, and scuba diving.

You can also find some great restaurants and bars in Montego Bay, where you can taste Jamaican food and get a taste of the island’s nightlife (and live music). You can also use it as a gateway for exploring other towns like Portland or Kingston. Be sure to find somewhere to listen to live music, as Jamaica has some of the catchiest music in the Caribbean.

The Complete Guide To Paris’ Train Stations

There is not one main train station in Paris, but multiple ones, each linking the French capital to a specific region of France and Europe. From Gare de Lyon, you can make your way to southeastern France, as well as Barcelona, Zurich, Geneva, and parts of Italy. From Gare du Nord, you can easily catch a high-speed train to Amsterdam and London, or simply make your way to the north of France. Paris’ train stations are well-oiled systems that keep the railway network organized in a city and country where traveling by train is always preferred to any other modes of transport.

What are the six railway stations in Paris? What is the main railway station in Paris? What is the nicest train station in Paris? What is the difference between Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est?Is it safe to walk around Gare du Nord? Why is the Gare du Nord famous?Which train station is TGV Paris?Where to stay in Paris near the city’s six train stationsWhat are the 6 railway stations in Paris?

There are six railway stations in Paris:

Gare du Nord: Gare du Nord is for trains that serve the north of France, England, Belgium, the Netherlands, and parts of northwestern Germany. Address: 18 rue de Dunkerque, 75010 ParisGare de Lyon: Gare de Lyon is for trains that serve the southeast of France, Switzerland, parts of Italy, and parts of Spain. Address: Place Louis Armand, 75012 ParisGare de l’Est: Gare de l’Est is for trains that serve the east of France, Germany, and Luxembourg. Address: Place du 11 novembre 1918, 75010 ParisGare Montparnasse: Gare Montparnasse is for trains that serve the west and southwest of France, including the Atlantic coast, and all the way to the Spanish border and beyond to parts of Spain. Address: 17 boulevard de Vaugirard, 75015 ParisGare d’Austerlitz: Gare d’Austerlitz is for trains that serve central-western France. Address: 85 quai d’Austerlitz, 75013 ParisGare St. Lazare: Gare St. Lazare is for trains that serve Normandy and the west of the Île-de-France (the region surrounding Paris). Address: 13 rue d’Amsterdam, 75008 Paris

All six train stations in Paris are linked to the metro system, and/or the regional express trains (RER) that serve Paris and its near suburbs, and/or the Transilien trains, i.e. the commuter rail network that serve the Île-de-France .

Note that there is a train station inside Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport, allowing certain travelers to catch their train directly from the airport without having to use the RER and metro systems to cross the city to get to one of the train stations mentioned above.

What is the main railway station in Paris?Paris Train Stations: Gare du Nord

Gare du Nord. Photo: EQRoy/Shutterstock

There is not one main train station in Paris, there are six of them. The busiest of them all is Gare du Nord with 220 million travelers passing through every year. Gare du Nord has the heaviest railway and passenger traffic in all of Europe and is one of the biggest train stations in the world.

What is the nicest train station in Paris?

Photo: V_E/Shutterstock

Photo: EQRoy/Shutterstock

Besides Gare Montparnasse, a structure of glass and concrete that is rather unsightly, the other five Parisian train stations have beautiful architectures. That said, Gare de Lyon, with its Belle Époque style and its famous four-dial clock tower, might be the nicest of them all — inside and out. The iconic bar and restaurant Le Train Bleu, with its amazing 1900 decor is located within Gare de Lyon, and it’s a sight to see even if you don’t have a train to catch (make a reservation). Note that going inside the train station’s 220-foot tall clock tower is only possible at certain times of the year.

What is the difference between Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est?Paris Train Stations: Gare de l'Est

Gare de l’Est. Photo: Richie Chan/Shutterstock

Even though Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est are very near each other (only a seven-minute walk apart), the two train stations serve different areas of France and Europe. Gare du Nord is for trains that serve the north of France, England (London via the Eurostar), Belgium, the Netherlands, and parts of northwestern Germany (all three destinations are served by the Thalys high-speed train). Gare de l’Est, however, is for trains that serve the east of France, Germany, and Luxembourg.

Is it safe to walk around Gare du Nord?

Despite receiving nearly 700,000 travelers per day and having a heavy police presence, Gare du Nord is generally considered unsafe. If you travel via Gare du Nord, watch your belongings, do not linger, and try to not travel via this train station at night or on your own. Avoid the area in front of the train station where many ill-intentioned people hang out and do not go in the street right behind where drug users and sellers have set up camp.

Why is the Gare du Nord famous?

Gare du Nord is famous for being the arrival and departure train station of the Eurostar, the high-speed train that connects London to Paris in just a few hours via the world’s longest underwater tunnel.

Unfortunately, Gare du Nord and its surrounding neighborhood are also infamous for being one of the most dangerous areas of Paris. Do not linger around Gare du Nord and avoid this area if at all possible.

Which train station is TGV Paris?

There is no train station named “TGV Paris” in Paris. That said, the TGV area of Gare Montparnasse is often referred to as “Montparnasse 2 – Gare TGV”.

Note that TGV is an acronym that means “Train à Grande Vitesse”, i.e. high-speed train, and that TGVs serve the four following train stations in Paris: Gare du Nord, Gare de Lyon, Gare de l’Est et Gare Montparnasse.

How do you transfer from Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon?

The easiest way to go between Gare du Nord and Gare de Lyon is by using the line D of the regional express train, also known as RER D, going towards Melun or Malesherbes. The journey is direct, takes less than 20 minutes, and costs $2.25 (2.10 €). The RER D is colored in green on the public transport map of Paris.

Your Dream Lake Como Villa Is an Attraction and an Accommodation

For some travelers to Lake Como, getting a peek at George Clooney’s personal villa is probably the coolest thing you could see in Northern Italy’s Lombardy region, breathtaking scenery aside. Clooney’s not the only one with a majestic villa on Lake Como, though. At least one allows visitors to tour the property to get a feeling for what it might be like to live the lavish yet simple Lake Como life. It’s called Villa Monastero, and it’s located in the town of Varenna.

@epic.stays POV: your boat is pulling up to📍Villa Monastero on #LakeComo in #Italy 🤩 🎥 @lakecomoboat #italytravel #hotelguide #italy🇮🇹 #traveltiktok ♬ O Sole Mio – Music of Italy

Villa Monastero was originally built as a convent in the 12th century but was later renovated and transformed into a private residence. The grounds feature a Botanical Garden and a House Museum, both of which have incredible views of Lake Como from their waterside perch. The villa has 12 rooms in total — four single and eight double — that are decorated with frescoed walls and antique furniture. Gusts of Villa Monastero also have access to luxurious amenities such as a private pool, terrace cafe, and nearby trails.

In the summer, Villa Monastero hosts cultural activities such as music concerts, as well as year-round art exhibitions and film screenings. The estate is open to visitors from between April and December. Note that certain areas may be closed on certain days due to events or maintenance. General admission to the House Museum and Botanical Garden costs about $13 while tickets to just the Botanical Garden cost about $10 per person. Discounts are available for people over the age of 65, between the ages of 15 and 25, large groups, and more.

Whether or not you’re not planning to stay at Villa Monastero, an overnight in Lake Como should still be on your bucket list, and there are plenty of Lake Como Airbnbs available to make that happen, no matter your price point. Italy’s also chock-full of gorgeous Italian lakes that aren’t Lake Como, if that’s more your speed.

9 Airbnbs in Las Vegas With a Pool for a Perfect 2023 Trip

Las Vegas is a city known for its lavish hotels and resorts, but many young and savvy travelers are turning to Airbnbs for more affordable and unique experiences — and Las Vegas certainly has some of the most unique Airbnbs you’ll find in the US.

But there’s one big drawback to Vegas: it can get hot. Really hot. It’s in the Mojave Desert, with an extremely warm and dry climate and very little precipitation. The city experiences very hot summers, and temperatures can easily reach 105 degrees F or higher. That’s why you’ll want to make sure you book an Airbnb in Las Vegas with a pool — and maybe a hot tub, since it can get chilly on winter evenings (well, into the 50s F).

Every listing below is an Airbnb in Las Vegas with a pool, and most are private. Las Vegas tends to be a rather inexpensive city, and you can find rentals below $50 a night, especially if you don’t mind a shared pool.

The Airbnbs below are listed in order of the least expensive to most expensive starting rate, starting at just $49 a night. If you’re looking for a house with a private resort-style pool grotto for 10 guests, head toward the bottom of the page.

This rental is a one-bedroom suite on the Las Vegas Strip at the MGM Grand. Guests have full access to MGM Grand Signature amenities, including a massive outdoor pool area with a jacuzzi and concierge services seven days a week. It’s a studio unit, but a very big one, and the bathroom is nearly as large as the living area (complete with a soaking tub!) The unit has a kitchenette, though you’ll be so close to the finest restaurants and most popular bars in Las Vegas that you may never use it. It’s without a doubt one of the most affordable Las Vegas Airbnbs you’ll find.

Why book an Airbnb in Las Vegas with a pool when you could book one with a pool and a lazy river? Sure, there’s no beating around the bush: this rental is basically just a hotel suite. But you won’t find a hotel room with a private sitting area and a kitchenette anywhere near this price. It’s in Tahiti Village, which is just a few blocks south of the Strip near the airport. Renters get access to everything the complex offers, including several dining areas and a lazy river an eighth of a mile long.

If you’re going to spend most of your time on the Las Vegas strip and don’t want to break the bank, this is an excellent choice.

If you want what most people would consider a party house — but don’t want to pay in the four-digits per night — this roomy home 10 minutes from downtown could be the perfect pick. It has four bedrooms, a billiards room with a flat-screen TV, and a converted garage with Pac-Man, air hockey, a Hot Shot basketball game, and more.

Of course, the reason you’d book this is because it’s an Airbnb in Las Vegas with a pool  — but there’s more outside than just a pool. The outdoor space is almost as large as the indoor space, with a cabana, a Jacuzzi, lots of sun loungers, a firepit with lots of seating, and an outdoor grill and dining area. Divide the price by 10 guests, and you’ve got a really fun, really budget-friendly place to stay in Las Vegas.

It’s nearly impossible not to see photos of this rental and not start hearing the Super Mario theme song in your head. This is the perfect booking if some folks in your group only care about having an Airbnb with a pool in Las Vegas, but others want a house packed with fun things to do. Here, you get both. That includes a Nintendo 64 console with all the Mario games you can imagine, a retro Street Fighter arcade console, and closets packed with board games.

The house has plenty of space for a whopping 15 people, plus a picture-perfect outdoor area with a pool and hot tub. Since it’s only a five-minute drive to the Strip, it’d be an ideal Las Vegas bachelor or bachelorette party rental (especially considering the incredibly affordable per-person price if you pack the house).

Bedrooms: 5Guests: 16+Rates from: $360

This is the largest Airbnb in Las Vegas with a pool you’ll find on this list. In fact, it’s so big that there’s not really even a limit, but the owners say it can fit at least 16. Those guests are spread between five bedrooms, three of which have bunk beds, so you really can pack people in. And really, given how much there is to do in this house, you may not spend much time sleeping, anyway.

Outside, there’s a private pool with half a dozen sun loungers, plus a three-hole putting green. There’s also a fire pit with lots of seating, an outdoor foosball table, and a grill and covered dining area. Inside, there’s a billiards table, several arcade games (Vegas owners seem to love their arcade games!) and an air hockey table. The bedrooms are kind of small, but it’s affordable enough that even a group of six or eight will find it to be a good deal.

If you always thought it’d be fun to party at the Playboy Mansion but don’t actually want to share the pool, this house is an excellent fit. It has one of the prettiest pools of any Airbnb with a pool in Las Vegas, with a giant grotto-style pool divided by an over-pool walkway, plus an attached hot tub with waterfalls cascading over house-sized piles of rocks. It truly looks like a miniature version of something you’d find at one of the fancy Las Vegas hotels on the Strip.

The roomy home also has a full-sized pool table, four roomy bedrooms, and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating for everyone. It’s also dog friendly, making this an excellent pick for travelers driving to Vegas and bringing their furry friends along. Like a few other Las Vegas Airbnbs with pools on this list, there’s a daily fee for heating the hot tub (which the owners will detail and can bill in advance).

This unique Airbnb with a pool in Las Vegas channels everything the western city is known for: southwestern vibes, subtle influences from south of the border, warm colors and cacti, and even a slot machine or two. The large outdoor area has a resort-style pool surrounded by palms and cacti, plus a full outdoor kitchen complete with a small bar. But the coolest feature may be the roomy teepee with plenty of seating, plus a central fire pit (there’s a backyard fire pit, too).

Inside, renters get an expansive living space with a downright massive kitchen and separate bar area (with two slot machines, no less!) Sure, it’s a Las Vegas Airbnb with a pool, but it’s also an Airbnb with an outdoor putting green, a peaceful hammock area, a putting green, a giant chess board, and a basketball court — and that’s just the outdoor features. Inside, renters get a home gym with a Peloton bike, a sauna, and a game room with foosball and billiards tables.

The home has seven beds across four bedrooms, plus tons of space for people to sleep on couches. And the outdoor space is ideal for relaxing, too, with loungers, Balinese-style woven chairs, and a roomy hot tub. The Penthouse at the Palms is the quintessential Las Vegas condo. It’s at the Palms (naturally), and has a high-rise private Jacuzzi with absolutely amazing view of Sin City. Oh, and it has two more hot tubs inside. It’s the perfect place to stay if you’re trying to recreate The Hangover (though we’d advise not doing that).

In addition to getting full use of the swanky three-bedroom condo, renters also get to use the facilities at the Palm Resort. That includes the resort pool, complete with in-pool couches, plus the Laguna pool. Both have rentable cabanas and bar service.

This Airbnb doesn’t come cheap, but if you want a true Las Vegas-style experience, it’s the place to book.

How far is Las Vegas from the Grand Canyon?how far is the las vegas to the grand canyon - airbnb in las vegas with pool

Photo: SierraLara/Shutterstock

The distance from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon is approximately 275 miles, which is about a 4.5-hour drive. You can go either to the South or North Rim. The South Rim is more popular and more developed in terms of amenities and activities. There are several lodges and campgrounds in the area, as well as a visitor center, restaurants, and gift shops. You can drive to many scenic viewpoints along the rim, but taking the park shuttle will alleviate the hassle of dealing with traffic or finding parking.

The North Rim is more remote and harder to reach, but many people consider it to be more peaceful and less crowded than the South Rim. There is only one lodge and one campground in the area, so you’ll want to book your accommodations well in advance if you’re pairing Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon in one trip. Note that the North Rim is closed between November and May, so don’t plan to head there unless you’re willing to snowshoe your way in (which you actually can do).

How far is Las Vegas from the Hoover Dam?how far is las vegas to the hoover dam - airbnb in las vegas with pool

Photo: Nido Huebl/Shutterstock

Las Vegas is approximately 30 miles northwest of the Hoover Dam. Without traffic, it takes about 45 minutes. You can drive yourself, or book a tour from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon. Good options include the half-day Hoover Dam Express Tour, with a guided dam tour and time to explore on your own; a three-hour Pink Jeep Tour that includes narration on the history of the area’s geology and people; or even tours where you can paddle on Lake Mead in front of the Hoover Dam.

If you prefer not to take a tour, you can definitely drive to the Hoover Dam on your own. It’s an easy drive from Las Vegas and there’s usually plenty of parking. You can pay for a self-guided tour in advance online or sign up for a guided tour when you arrive ($30 per person).

Where to stay in Las Vegas

Though the famous Las Vegas strip is the most well-known part of the city, it’s hardly the only place to stay in Las Vegas. The strip is where you’ll find most of the famous hotels like The Venetian or The Bellagio, so most of the Airbnbs in that area are likely to be condos within hotels.

Another area to stay is downtown Las Vegas, which is more local and is more like a “normal” city. It’s home to the Fremont Street Experience (a canopy of LED lights and three stages with live entertainment most evenings). If you want to visit Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam while in Vegas, you may want to stay in Henderson, about 20 minutes southeast of the Vegas strip.

Las Vegas is very drivable and in the middle of a dessert, so it doesn’t take too long to get out of the city. But if you want to visit famous outdoor areas like Valley of Fire State Park and the Desert National Wildlife Refuge, stay on the northern part of Las Vegas. If you’re headed to Red Rock Canyon or planning a day trip to Death Valley National Park, stay on the west side of Las Vegas to make your drive a smidge shorter.

Wine and Dine With Friendly Giraffes — in the Heart of Texas

Turns out, if you’re craving a safari experience, you don’t have to fly halfway across the world. You can mingle with zebras, kangaroos, giraffes, and more just 30 minutes outside of Waco, Texas — and we’re not talking about a trip to the zoo.

Blue Hills Ranch is a 150-acres giraffe and animal sanctuary in McGregor, Texas. (That’s slightly south of Waco and an hour-and-a-half northeast of Austin.) The ranch offers a variety of animal experiences, as well as cabins and an RV resort if you’d like to stay the night.

One of the coolest experiences that Blue Hills Ranch offers is called Dining with Giraffes, and it’s exactly what it sounds like. For $400 per person — $350 if you book one of the cabins — you can enjoy an hour-long meal of wine, salad, and charcuterie while rubbing elbows with giraffes that you can pet (and who might even nibble at your carrot sticks). The experience is designed for a minimum of two people and a maximum of six.

We hope you love Blue Hills Ranch! Just so you know, Matador may collect a small commission from the links on this page if you decide to book a stay. Listed prices are accurate as of the time of publication.

@foodwtf For a unique dining experience check out 📍Blue Hills Ranch in #Texas where you can dine with giraffes🦒 😍 🎥 @bluehillsranch #diningexperience #uniquedining #foodie #foodtravel #foodtiktok ♬ Circle of Life – Furnace and the Fundamentals

Other animal experiences at Blue Hills Ranch include a safari-style drive across the grounds and an otter adventure that allows you to play with the animals while they soak in a hot tub. In addition to safari animals — think zebras, red kangaroos, emus, camels, African spurred tortoise, and scimitar oryx — you’ll also see the sort of animals you might expect to inhabit a Texan ranch, such as wild mustangs, bison, mini donkeys, cows, pigs, deer, and horses.

Rates for the five cabins range from $100 to $500 per night for a standard two-person occupancy, although there’s enough room for four to six guests depending on the cabin. The cabins themselves are more comfortable than that accommodation type might suggest, complete with king-size memory foam mattresses, a fully equipped kitchenette, walk-in showers with standard bathroom amenities, and private balconies. Rates for RV sites range between $30 and $50 per night for two people, plus $10 additional per person per night.

How Travel Influencer Kyle Offutt Made a Career While Seeing the Country By Car

The profession of being a travel influencer and video creator may have its detractors. That said, if those detractors had the chance to get paid to pursue their favorite hobby, would they take it? Likely. Though ubiquitous on our social media feeds, the actual lifestyle of travel influencers remains somewhat of a mystery to many. Behind the final filtered product are logistical struggles and finely-honed packing systems that make it all possible.

Kyle Offutt is a travel filmmaker and influencer who’s been all over the United States, most often traveling the country by car. Not a van to follow that #vanlife, but a car. From Wichita, Kansas, Offutt first attracted attention on Tiktok for his unconventional travel style and has since gained hundreds of thousands of followers. In addition to posting epic travel content, he also makes videos about the road trip lifestyle, what it looks like, and how to do it yourself.

Matador caught up with Offutt to learn more about his profession, work style, and what it really is like to be a travel influencer today.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Matador: What’s your favorite trip you’ve taken so far and what made it special?

Kyle Offutt: Mostly my list of favorites just goes sideways and it’s hard to rank anything. But some standouts are an event called Creator Camp I went to last summer in Colorado where around 35 content creators got together in a giant cabin to just spend some time together without service and just connect with each other and do a ton of activities outdoors. I made a lot of amazing friends that inspire me. I was in a beautiful place with people who share my passions for art and storytelling. Another of my favorite trips was in the woods of North Carolina. I shared a tiny cabin home with some friends and made a documentary about making an album over around a month. We spent time doing arts and crafts, exploring the trails, building forts, making music, and watching movies. I felt like a little kid and was in this place away from everything for a good amount of time. I did all of my favorite things everyday with amazing people. And it was just 30 minutes outside of a very small town.

What’s the one thing you never leave home without?
@kylegoesoff Replying to @fullofskittles asking people I meet traveling to write down a piece of advice #strangers #traveling #notebook #advice ♬ Freaks – Surf Curse

The thing I never leave home without is a notebook I carry with me. Anytime I meet strangers at coffee shops, hostels, on hikes, or any random place I have them leave a piece of advice that they wish they knew earlier and sign it. Its really cool to see everyone’s unique handwriting, and a little life experience from people all over the world and all ages and backgrounds. It’s one of my prized possessions.

How do you pick the place that you want to go to next?

I always visit people instead of places because the company you keep at any place really makes the trip. If I get invited for a cool opportunity or my friends find a cheap flight and want some company I will tag along. Cost is normally a big factor for me, I cant say no to a good deal.

Is there a destination that you’ve found is severely underrated?
@kylegoesoff Will I be able to survive South America out of a backpack? 🎒 #southamerica #backpacking #patagonia ♬ Choking on Flowers – Fox Academy

Peru and many places in South America were very underrated to me. Most of the other travelers I met were European. As an American, I haven’t met many people who have gone to South America unless they have family there. It was inexpensive and so vibrant with culture. The food was amazing because of the diversity of ingredients. They had the highlands, coast, and jungle that produce so many different things. Peru is huge, so there are so many different landscapes. From the mountains with bright blue waters to an oasis in the desert and surfing on the coast, there was everything. It was easy to take the buses all over and flights were not expensive. Unfortunately political unrest right after our trip has made it more difficult to travel to recently but i’m really hoping they find peace because it is such an amazing place.

Where have you always wanted to go but haven’t made it to yet?

I’ve always wanted to go to the Netherlands, Thailand, and New Zealand. I always meet Dutch people on my travels and feel like I would fit in well with the culture. It is more expensive and I want to make an entire Europe trip if I were to go or spend at least a few months to understand how it is to live there. Thailand is a place I’ve been told I would love because of the tropical weather, beaches, and food scene. Although it is cheaper once you are there, it is expensive to get to for us in the States. Same with New Zealand. It has beautiful scenery but is an expensive country and is costly to get over there.

Where’s your next trip and what are you most excited to experience?

Right now my next trips are close desert camping and then going to the next Creator Camp in Utah. But the next big trip I have begun planning is to Alaska. In posting about eating and adventuring with strangers the most messages i’ve gotten have been from Alaska with a lot of awesome activities so I’m really excited to see the landscape and see it with locals.

Which state has the most underrated food scene?
@kylegoesoff Thai infused BBQ #kansascity #bbq #thaifood ♬ original sound – Kyle

This may be biased, but I feel like Kansas City has really developed in recent years. The barbecue is obviously great and stands out but there are so many creative things popping up and unique fusion concepts. On a recent trip I went to a barbecue and Thai infused restaurant, and it had some of the most surprising flavors and homey experience that blew me away. I grew up not far with many immigrant friends from Mexico and parts of Asia. Those food cultures and flavors have really started to appear in these cities.

Any car hacks for future road trippers?

Take out your seats or see if they can fold down then use a foam bed and blankets for bedding. For cars, I just found out that my front seat folds forward which gives me a lot more room. To help with cold you can use the sun reflectors for all of your windows to insulate your heat from the inside and use a reflector underneath you as well. Cracker Barrels and hospital parking lots are some of the better spots to sleep that most don’t know about. Use apps and websites like Free Campsites and iOverlander to find free spots to park. If you can sleep out of a car it makes travel waaaaay cheaper.

How did you first monetize your travel lifestyle?

At first I didn’t. Even now I don’t make a ton of money. If you think you’ll get rich doing this you’re very wrong – at least in the monetary sense. You will be very rich in experience and connection. I now have friends all over the world and many that I’m able to stay with. Now I get some money from social media platforms from bonuses and ad sharing, will license some of my content, and get an occasional brand deal. I’ve also made some free and paid guides to the places I’ve been. So far, this basically just covers my cost with a total audience of around 300,000. To get extra income I also do some filming and editing on the side for small businesses or other content creators. I know some van lifers will use things like DoorDash, Postmates, and Amazon to make money in new cities to cover their expenses.
