This Famous Parisian Church Is Open 24/7 To Maintain 130 Years of Nonstop Praying

The most famous church in Paris is undoubtedly Notre-Dame, but since the terrible fire of April 15, 2019, it’s been closed and tourists to the French capital have to make do with the second-most popular one: the Sacré-Coeur. Rarely referred to by its full name, La Basilique du Sacré-Coeur de Montmartre (The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Montmartre), this beautiful religious building shouldn’t be treated like a consolation prize — it’s a must-see, no matter what. And to visit, you need to put in some physical efforts and break a sweat because it’s located on the highest point in all of Paris.

Where is the Sacré-Coeur in Paris? How do I get to the Sacré-Coeur in Paris? How long does it take to climb to the Sacré-Coeur?When was the Sacré-Coeur built? Why is the Sacré-Coeur so famous? Is it free to visit the Sacré-Coeur?Can you go to the top of the Sacré-Coeur?Is there a dress code for the Sacré-Coeur?Hours of operation of the Sacré-CoeurWhen is mass at the Sacré-Coeur in Paris? The best hotels near the Sacré-Coeur in ParisWhere is the Sacré-Coeur in Paris?

The Sacré-Coeur is located in the charming neighborhood of Montmartre in Paris, in the 18th arrondissement of the city. Montmartre is a very touristy area of the French capital and is also a gathering spot for artists. The Sacré-Coeur is built on the Montmartre Hill, the highest point in all of Paris.

The exact address of the basilica is: 35 Rue du Chevalier de la Barre, 75018 Paris

How do I get to the Sacré-Coeur in Paris?

Unless you’re staying nearby and can easily walk to the basilica, the easiest way to get there is by taking the metro. The nearest metro stations are: Abbesses (metro line 12), Anvers (metro line two), and Château Rouge (metro line four), colored in dark green, blue, and purple, respectively, on the metro map of Paris.

The metro stations Abbesses and Anvers are the closest to the basilica, only a seven-minute walk. Note that the journey on foot to the Sacré Coeur is uphill and involves stairs. If you have reduced mobility, you can ride the funicular (a sort of elevator) from the bottom of the Montmartre Hill to the basilica for 1.5 minutes. It is available seven days per week, from 6 AM to 12:45 AM, and requires a simple metro ticket that cost $1.90 (2.10 €).

How long does it take to climb to the Sacré-Coeur?Stairs that lead to the Sacré Coeur in Paris

Photo: Mistervlad/Shutterstock

There are 270 steps from the bottom of the Montmartre Hill on rue Foyatier to the basilica. The time it takes you to climb those steps depend on your level of fitness and your enthusiasm at seeing this magnificent church, but most people climbs them in around 15 minutes. No matter how much you huff and puff, the reward at the top is very much worth the effort.

When was the Sacré-Coeur built?

The Montmartre Hill has been a place of worship for centuries, much before the construction of the basilica. A chapel dedicated to Saint Denis is believed to have existed on the hill as early as the fifth century, followed by an abbey and a martyrium (a place where relics of martyrs are kept). The name of the neighborhood itself, Montmartre, means “the Mount of the Martyrs”.

The construction of the basilica started in 1875, after France lost the war against Prussia, and was completed in 1914, just before the First World War. It was consecrated in 1919.

Why is the Sacré-Coeur so famous?Inside the Sacré Coeur in Paris. The Sacré Coeur is home to the largest mosaic in France

Photo: Beautiful landscape/Shutterstock

Besides its grand architecture, the basilica is located on the highest point in the city, the Montmartre Hill, from where views of Paris are exceptional, making it a very popular venue for tourists. Also, the ceiling of the basilica is home to the largest mosaic in France (it is over 5,000 square feet), a sight you don’t want to miss.

The Sacré-Coeur has been the site of uninterrupted prayer dedicated to Jesus Christ for 130 years, making it a very special place for Christians. You can sign up to participate in this chain of prayers and spend the night in a special accommodation adjacent to the basilica.

Is it free to visit the Sacré-Coeur?

Yes, it is free to visit the Sacré-Coeur, and you do not need a ticket or a reservation to enter.

Note that guided visits are not allowed in the basilica and that flash photography and videos are also forbidden.

Can you go to the top of the Sacré-Coeur?

Yes, you can go to the top of the Sacré-Coeur, inside the main dome, from where you’ll get amazing views of Paris — and it’s free. There are 300 steps and no elevator to get to the top. You can also visit the crypt, but the belfry is closed to visitors.

Is there a dress code for the Sacré-Coeur?

While there is no specific dress code to enter the Sacré-Coeur, visitors are asked to wear “decent clothing”, which usually means that shoulders need to be covered, hats must be removed, and that the hem of shorts, dresses, and skirts should land below the knees.

Hours of operation of the Sacré-CoeurSacré Coeur in Paris on a sunny day

Photo: JeanLucIchard/Shutterstock

The basilica is open every day, from 6:30 AM to 10:30 PM. The dome and the crypt have more restricted hours, however, and are closed at lunch time.

The Sacré-Coeur is open all night to those who participate in the chain of prayers for which you need to sign up by phone or email at least 24 hours in advance.

When is mass at the Sacré-Coeur in Paris?

If you wish to attend mass at the Sacré-Coeur, you can do so from Monday to Friday at 7 AM, 11 AM, 3 PM (on Friday only), 6:30 PM, and 10 PM. On Saturday, mass is held at 7 AM and 10 PM. On Sunday mass is held at 7 AM, 11 AM, 6 PM, and 10 PM.

Some of the Best Parts of Cincinnati…Are in Kentucky

Just across the Ohio River, the cities of Northern Kentucky are still very much a reflection of neighboring Cincinnati, OH. You’ll see plenty of Bengals and Reds gear, as well as that of FC Cincinnati, the city’s Major League Soccer Club. But you’ll also find more of that unbridled Kentucky spirit. It’s a little more independent, a little more raucous — perhaps even saucy — and a little more real.

Speaking of spirit, there are plenty more Kentucky spirits here, too. Sure, Cincy is a bourbon town, but when you head over into the Bluegrass State, the status of that barrel-aged whiskey is elevated to near religion.

So if a trip to Cincy is in your future, make sure to include the city’s other half — in Northern Kentucky. (By the way, if you fly in you’ll be off to a great start, as the airport is actually in Northern Kentucky. The airport code “CVG” is named for Covington, KY.) Ready to explore?

This guide is proudly produced in partnership with the meetNKY Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Welcome to Bourbon CountryPhoto: Alex Tilford / Smoke Justis

Ninety-five percent of US bourbons are made in Kentucky, and the northern part of the state is your gateway to it all. This is the home of 11 of the best bourbon bars in the nation, according to The Bourbon Review, which also once named the region the “Best Bourbon Weekend Trip.” And the locals have made it easy for you. Their bourbon trail is called The B-Line® and includes a collection of craft distilleries, bourbon bars, and restaurants that specialize in the spirit.

A ‘New Riff’ on an old tradition

New Riff Distilling has been crushing it since it opened its doors in 2014. Both their signature bourbon and rye whiskeys and their two gins won double gold awards from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. And while the bourbons are outstanding, don’t skip the gin. I don’t generally like gin but was encouraged to try it at one of their tastings. I eventually broke down and took a sip…and bought a bottle on the spot. Sip it neat, it’s that good.

Work your way through 700 bourbons

The first bar in the region devoted to bourbon, the Old Kentucky Bourbon Bar (or OKBB) presents you with a mind-boggling list of more than 700 bourbons—plus 200 more American whiskeys. Definitely ask the knowledgeable servers about the “dusty bottles” released from their bourbon vault at various times.

For a more upscale scene, hit the lobby bar at the award-winning Hotel Covington. There’s a craft cocktail menu with rotating seasonal options as well as a much more extensive bourbon menu that’s two pages long (in small type). Perhaps the apex of it all, though, is the 1 ounce of The Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve that will set you back $400 (though don’t worry—there are plenty of other great bourbons on offer that are more accessible).

Smooth bourbon and smoked meats—you can’t lose

Named for one-time Major League Baseball pitcher Walter “Smoke” Justis, the  multilevel sports bar Smoke Justis lists more than 340 bourbons on their menu. And that’s not even taking into account the separate menus for whiskeys, ryes, scotch, and Irish whiskey (as well as others for beer, wine, and cocktails). There are plenty of smoked meats to order, too, but be sure to leave a little room for the Bourbon Pecan Blondie.

Bourbon and coffee in one stop? Don’t mind if I do

Located in the Newberry Brothers Coffee shop is the small, speakeasy-esque Prohibition Bourbon Bar. They claim to have the largest collection of bourbon and rye whiskeys in the world—more than 6,000 of them. To start, there are more than 800 bourbons alone. You might just need a boost from one of their coffees first to get through the drink menu alone.

Bourbon, Brats, and BurgersPhoto: Deogracias Lerma / Frida 602

Northern Kentucky has a diverse food scene, with establishments that often draw on the area’s German heritage. So many German immigrants settled here throughout the 1800s that one of the neighborhoods in Covington (a place chock-full of bars, restaurants, and shops) is called Mainstrasse Village — Mainstrasse is German for Main Street. But there are also restaurants presenting flavors from Italy, Cambodia, the Netherlands, Japan, India, the Mediterranean, and more. For truly local fare, check out Dixie Chili’s version of Cincy-style chili as well as goetta, which is sausage-like with ground pork and beef, onions, garlic, steel-cut oats, and lots of spices.

The menu is packed with German-style pretzels, wursts, potato pancakes, and spaetzle (egg noodles), as well as one of the best burgers anywhere. Biers are brewed onsite and are appropriately served by the liter (or half liter). And when the weather warms up, check out one of the best biergartens around.

It’s perfect for when you’re looking for just the right place to pick up your model AT-AT Walker, Ren & Stimpy collectibles (such as a Powdered Toast Man action figure), Planet of the Apes paraphernalia, back issues of Cracked magazine, Masters of the Universe board game, or ironic Golden Girls mug.

Hail, hail, rock ’n’ roll

Hail Records & Oddities is bursting with…well, records and oddities. The self-admitted “record store gone weird” is packed full of books, CDs, VHS movies, and plenty of vinyl—all wedged between a menagerie of taxidermied animals. There are crystal balls, Ouija boards, vintage medical equipment, ram skulls, and, just possibly, that mummified cat for which you’ve been searching.

Recharge your spirit

The goal of the “working apothecarium metaphysical shop” (and Airbnb) that is Seventh Street Gifts is to provide an accessible, affordable apothecary. Thus, their offerings include handcrafted soaps, fresh oils, candles made onsite, and teas, herbs, and tinctures. Now be honest: Did you expect to come across a spot like this in Northern Kentucky?

What It’s Like Staying in a Riad, Morocco’s Traditional Dwelling

Staying in a Riad in Morocco can be a truly memorable experience. Riads are traditional Moroccan houses built around an interior courtyard or garden, typically featuring beautiful architecture, intricate tile work, and ornate decorations. Many riads have been converted into guesthouses, providing travelers with an opportunity to stay in a traditional Moroccan home and experience local culture firsthand. Each riad has its own design and character, ranging from grand and opulent to cozy and intimate.

This particular riad, Riad Dyor in Marrakech, is a luxurious guesthouse located in the heart of the Marrakech medina, just a few minutes’ walk from the famous Jemaa el-Fnaa square. The riad has been beautifully restored, blending traditional Moroccan architecture with modern luxury amenities. Guests here can enjoy a peaceful courtyard and garden, featuring a refreshing pool and comfortable seating areas. There’s also a rooftop terrace, providing stunning views of the medina and the Atlas Mountains.

One of the advantages of staying in a riad is the opportunity to interact with the staff and local Moroccan people. Many riads are family-run businesses, and the staff are often happy to share their knowledge of Moroccan culture and way of life with guests.

Riad accommodations typically include comfortable rooms with private bathrooms, and some amenities like a pool or a rooftop terrace. In some cases, meals can also be provided, typically featuring traditional Moroccan cuisine such as tagine and couscous. Staying in a riad also puts you in close proximity to many of Morocco’s historic sites and attractions, such as Marrakech’s famous medina and the souks (markets) of Fez.

9 Airbnbs in Costa Rica for a Tropical Summer Escape

If you’re looking for a summer getaway that’s half beachy paradise and half rainforest adventure, look no further than Costa Rica. The country is small but packs a punch when it comes to things to do. It’s known for some of the best surfing in Central America, and the famous Monteverde cloud forests are a natural treasure. Add in wildlife lodges, rainforest hikes to hidden waterfalls, several national parks with rare species like jaguars, and the fact that the country’s volcanoes produce some of the world’s best hot springs, and it’s no surprise that there’s so much demand to visit the gorgeous country.

Fortunately, that demand also means there’s a perfect Airbnb in Costa Rica for every type of traveler — and that means every type of traveler. Luxe beachside villas are easy to come by, but so are treehouses tucked into the cloud forest, surf shacks with open-air living rooms, and more creative options made out of shipping containers and bubbles. If you’re looking for a unique Airbnb in Costa Rica to soak up the summer sun, keep reading.

We hope you love the spaces and stays we recommend! Just so you know, Matador may collect a small commission from the links on this page if you decide to book a stay. Listed prices are accurate as of the time of publication.

The Sunset House is an Airbnb Plus property, so while it’s not cheap, it’s certainly luxurious as can be. This Airbnb in Costa Rica exemplifies the best of indoor/outdoor living, with five bedrooms that open to decks with beach views. It comes with a staff of three (a housekeeper, caretaker and property manager) and is just a five-minute walk to Tamarindo Beach. It’s also only a quick 10-minute walk to Tamarindo town, which is known for a lively and young beach-bar type atmosphere.

Split this house a full 14 ways, and it actually ends up being a luxurious stay for a fairly reasonable per-person nightly cost.

Closest town: San CarlosMaximum guests: 4Bedrooms: 2Rates from: $115/night

It’s hard to overlook this unique Airbnb in Costa Rica, especially because it’s just one of three in an eco-resort tucked into the rainforest. It’s part of Bio Thermales Natural Resort, roughly two hours north of San Jose, and guests have access to the natural on-site hot springs. The resort itself is generally not super developed, so the pools are surrounded by lush foliage, and it’s not unusual to see monkeys, sloths, and iguanas wandering by while you’re soaking in the hot and cold pools.

The treehouse itself sleeps four — two on the first floor and two in the lofted area, but given the low price, it’s a great pick for a couple or solo traveler, too. There’s a small kitchenette, a private raised deck, and plenty of shared space around the resort’s pools and outdoor picnic and relaxing areas.

First things first: this is not a full private Airbnb. But it is a luxe suite inside a very small boutique hotel, and guests of this particular room get a gargantuan bathroom and access to the private beach club next door. There’s also a private beachview balcony.

The rest of the space is basically a dreamy traditional villa, and you’ll have access to spaces like a huge kitchen (though breakfast is served daily), a big living room, and tons of outdoor living space. There are only four other rooms, so while you can socialize with your fellow guests, you don’t have to worry about feeling cramped. Danta Beach is about 30 minutes from Liberia International Airport and well known for amazing sunsets. If you’re looking for a romantic Airbnb in Costa Rica, this is it.

Playa Hermosa is on the Papagayo Peninsula and is known for a huge sandy stretch of beach and warm, usually gentle water. That makes it ideal for swimming, snorkeling, beginner surfing, and scuba diving. There are also dozens of tiny small towns dotting this stretch of coast, making it a great place to go beach hopping — stopping once or twice for a fish taco at beach bars in between, naturally.

For a super-organic, natural stay with just a touch more creature comforts than a full treehouse, check out this rainforest-inspired, open-air Airbnb in Costa Rica’s Puntarenas Province. There’s a saltwater pool and a shaded yoga shala, and it’s within walking distance of the town of Santa Teresa. The town is a little more remote than other beach destinations on this coast, but it has a growing population of digital nomads and other laid-back residents who prefer Santa Teresa’s more low-key atmosphere over bigger party towns.

This Airbnb is for the full unit, but you can also rent the top or bottom privately if you don’t need all three bedrooms. Note that the house is tucked away up a dirt road, so make sure to rent an SUV (or an ATV) if you book it.

Closest town: Piedras Blancas de OsaMaximum guests: 4Bedrooms: 2Rates from: $153/night

This cool Airbnb in Costa Rica is off the grid on the owner’s large property, and guests have access to all the hiking trails, swimming holes, and waterfalls they can walk to. Though the whole house is beautiful, one of the coolest parts about it are the multiple decks looking out onto the jungle. It’s a birdwatcher’s dream, and the hosts thoughtfully included binoculars and a birding guide for guest use.

As dreamy as this Airbnb is, there are two considerations to know before booking. First, it’s a 10-to-15 minute walk to the house, since there’s no road access. And second, the pool is shared with the owners who live below. Considering they built this house, they’re probably pretty cool people to hang out with — but it’s not a private plunge pool situation. However, it is an “easy access to wildlife” situation, as it’s close to Piedras Blancas National Park and the wilderness areas around it.

Visitors to the country who want to spend their summer days hiking among some of the most stunning views in Central America should take a pass on the beach for a few days and instead book this dome on a raised platform in the Monteverde Cloud Forest.

It’s not a full home, as the “kitchen” is really just a coffee station. However, since it’s just five minutes to Santa Elena, you don’t have to go far for restaurants, bars, or a grocery store. More importantly, however, is the fact that it’s near the famous suspension bridges and Curi Cancha Reserve (a bird-watching haven). So you probably won’t want to return to the dome midday since you’ll be out exploring, anyway.

The Coco Art Villas look like they should be on the cover of a design magazine, with a modern style that somehow creates privacy while still making guests feel surrounded by nature. Individual units don’t have kitchens, but the complex has an all-day restaurant and bar.

One thing to note is that these villas are fairly open to nature. There’s a mosquito net above the bed, but if you are absolutely anti-bug, you may want to look elsewhere. Of course, Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse countries on the planet, so you’ll find bugs everywhere. You’re probably not considering an Airbnb in Costa Rica anyway if you have full-on arachnophobia.

The Pipe House describes itself as a “premium hostel,” which is partially accurate. But this isn’t a bed in a dorm that sleeps 16 people. These rooms are unique rounded units, with nine total on the property. All rooms include breakfast, and because it’s within Baulas Marine Park, your breakfast will probably be accompanied by the sights and sounds of macaws and other tropical birds. Each room is made from a giant concrete pipe, and there are four shared bathrooms, plus a shared kitchen and yoga area.

Playa Grande is one of the best places to surf in Costa Rica and you can rent surfboards from the Pipe House. But there’s also a really healthy sea turtle population and plenty of areas to see them if you’d prefer to get on the water in a kayak instead.

See the Luxurious Side of Los Cabos at the Incredible Casa Maat

As someone who travels for a living, there is one destination I always find myself returning to: Los Cabos. It may be a no-brainer why this sun-soaked and sand-filled destination attracts travelers worldwide, but for me, Cabo offers something a lot more meaningful. I first lived in Cabo for a month on my digital nomad journey, and the city provided a peaceful retreat where I could focus on my physical and mental wellness.

When I returned to Cabo this time, I was excited to be back in a familiar place and experience it in a fresh and new way with a weekend at Casa Maat, a boutique hotel located inside the JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa. I was there to attend the eighth edition of the Relish the Heritage Festival, which was hosted by chef Thierry Blouet and welcomed Carlos Gaytán, who was Mexico’s first chef to earn a Michelin star. Food from Mexico’s Puebla region was on full display, and combined with the incredible food, Casa Maat proved to be the perfect escape.

The name for Casa Maat comes from both Spanish and the language of the Kiliwa, an indigenous people of Mexico living in Baja California, where Los Cabos is located. Casa is Spanish for home, while maat means Earth. I left my time at Casa Maat feeling rejuvenated and reminded of why I set off to travel in the first place: to be deeply connected with myself, others, and the world.

Casa Maat is an intimate experience. The boutique luxury hotel has 39 rooms and 6 suites, which rooms starting around $500 to $600 a night, depending on the season. The guest rooms come either with a king or two double beds, with options to look out to the ocean or toward the resort. Each suite is distinct and comes with a living area, balcony, beachfront room, and two bedrooms. Some suites have a fireplace and plunge pool or whirlpool.

The rooms have a modern and smooth design and all the traditional amenities one would expect, from Nespresso coffee machines, to LCD TVs and high-speed internet. I never wanted to leave the rainfall shower in my room or the balcony overlooking the vibrant blue water where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean. I also enjoyed the hotel’s personal touches, such as the butler service included in the rate, which helped coordinate activities in town and served as my personal point of contact for my hotel needs during the stay.

While the rooms are reason enough to love Casa Maat, there’s no shortage of things to do that adds to the experience. For groups and companies, the hotel has beautiful lounges that can be tailored to suit the guests’ needs. For families traveling to Casa Maat, the boutique hotel offers a game room and a movie room for fun family activities.

While there, I spent a lot of time at Jasha Spa, an indoor spa on the property with breathtaking design. A garden welcomes you at the entrance as you walk in. There are 12 intimate treatment rooms, and a vitality pool, private whirlpool, and private jacuzzis within the spa. For my service, I experienced a standard deep tissue massage for 60 minutes. The masseuse used massage and aromatherapy oils infused with natural healing ingredients that reduce stress and allowed for the ultimate relaxation.

While in Cabo, if traveling from December to March, book a whale-watching tour through Cabo Adventures. During those months, the whales are migrating, and you can watch them flipping and jumping through the water.

What to eat at Casa Maat

Photo: Casa Maat at JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa

While Casa Maat is an exclusive hotel, guests still have access to the amenities and restaurants at the encompassing JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa, all within a 10 minute walk. For dining options, the main restaurants are located on the JW Marriott side. The hotel has six high-end restaurants: Café des Artistes, Auka Deli, Niparaya Grill and Bar, Nak Grill & Bar, Úa Culinary Artisans, and Kaha Bar, all with different menu offerings. Niparaya Grill and Bar offers delectable cocktails and sushi. Nak Grill & Bar is a poolside restaurant serves both seafood and steak. The pool bar, Kaha Bar, serves fruity cocktails and snacks. My favorite restaurant for the weekend was UÁ Culinary Artisans, a fine-dining experience with an infusion of international cuisines.

On Sundays, the hotel hosts what it calls “the best brunch in Cabo” at Úa Culinary Artisans guests at both Casa Maat and the JW Marriott — and it lives up to this title. The brunch features live cooking demonstrations, an array of food from tacos to sushi to a doughnut wall, and fresh coconut waters.

How to get to Casa Maatbeach near casa maat in los cabos

Los Cabos is located at the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula. It encompasses two towns, Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. Cabo San Lucas is stereotypically known to have more of a spring break crowd, while San José del Cabo is more on the calmer local side. However, both are great places to spend time in Cabo. Casa Maat is an exclusive boutique hotel inside JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort & Spa in San José del Cabo.

Flying into Cabo is simple, with many flights available to the main airport, Los Cabos International Airport. Casa Maat is roughly a 30-minute drive from the airport, and I was able to book my airport transfer from EPIC, a private transportation and shuttle service in Cabo.
