Everything To Know Before Visiting the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Sure, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is technically just a museum. But it’s also a cultural icon that has supported the city’s art scene since its inception in 1935. It was the first West Coast museum dedicated solely to modern and contemporary art, and because of that, it’s played a pivotal role in introducing new artistic movements to California and beyond. Over the years, the museum has undergone several transformations, but its mission has remained the same: to make art a meaningful part of public life. It remains one of the most popular things to do in the Bay Area, right up there next to attractions like Umbrella Alley and Fisherman’s Wharf.

One of the things that make SFMOMA unique is its size. It covers 460,000 square feet of space, spread across seven floors and indoor and outdoor galleries. That makes it one of the largest contemporary art museums in the country. The facade of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is also art unto itself, with a very distinctive and modern design. It’s been described as “funky,” “monumental,” and “a granite glacier.”

But the SFMOMA is more than just a beautiful building. The museum is renowned for its collections, which include works by some of the most influential artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, including Frida Kahlo, Jackson Pollock, and Andy Warhol. In addition to the impressive permanent collections, the SFMOMA always has several rotating exhibits on display, ranging from mixed media to sculpture to video and audio installations.

Here’s everything you need to know about planning a trip to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art this year, including how to get there and how to save money on buying San Francisco Museum of Modern Art tickets.

General admission to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is $25 for adults, $22 for seniors, and $19 for young adults (ages 19-24). Admission is free for visitors 18 and under, and for SFMOMA members.

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art tickets are also available at discounted rates through a variety of tourist and membership-based programs, all of which are listed on the SF MOMA website. Unfortunately, SF MOMA doesn’t participate in the free museum access program offered for Bank of America cardholders.

What days are free at the SFMOMA?

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) offers free admission to all visitors on the first Thursday of every month. On those days, the museum is open from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM, and visitors can explore the museum’s vast collection of modern and contemporary art free of charge. However, first Thursdays are subject to capacity limits, so there may be longer wait times than usual. And some exhibits may not be included in the free admission offer.

It’s best to buy San Francisco Museum of Modern Art tickets in advance through the museum website. All tickets are timed entry, and you’ll want to arrive about 15 minutes before your time to start lining up. For visitors under 18, tickets are free with the purchase of any adult ticket(s). Adult tickets are $25, young adults are $19, and anyone over age 65 is $22.

Some exhibits have an extra cost or special ticket. You’ll buy those tickets via the same website, be sure to click which extra San Francisco Museum of Modern Art exhibition(s) you want to see. Weekends may sell out, but you can usually buy tickets at the window on weekdays. But since there’s no extra cost to buy them online, it’s probably best to do it in advance so you know you’ll be able to get in at your preferred time. Evening events, parties, openings, and events of the like usually have their own separate ticketing.

How long does it take to go through the SFMOMA?san francisco museum of modern art - guy at gallery

Photo: Taner Muhlis Karaguzel/Shutterstock

According to data from SF MOMA, the average length of time visitors spend at the museum is approximately two hours. But if you’re an art fan, or plan on taking a guided tour, you’ll likely want to spend much longer than that. You may want to browse the museums exhibits in advance to help plan how much time you should budget. If you enjoy reading each display placard and don’t want to skip any exhibits, you could easily spend a full day there.

If you’re visiting with kids, you may want to plan your schedule around the various kids programs and activities, rather than around walking through each exhibit.

What should I not miss at SFMOMA?San francisco museum of modern art people at exhibit

Photo: Vlad Teodor/Shutterstock

What San Francisco Museum of Modern Art exhibitions you don’t want to miss mostly depends on what you’re most interested in. For some people, the audio-visual displays are some of the coolest works of art, while others love admiring classics from artists like Andy Warhol and Wassily Kandinsky.

But for most visitors, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s rotating special exhibits will be the can’t-miss attractions. These are usually collections that travel around the world to various museums, as well as temporary collections of pieces not usually available on public display. As of May 2023, exhibits include a collection of work from mobile artist Alexander Calder, an exhibit on Latina art from the city’s Mission District in the 1980s, a walk-through musical/video performance called “The Visitors,” and what the SF MOMA calls a “musical adventure” inspired by the novel “Moby Dick” from filmmaker Wu Tsang.

Does SFMOMA have free parking?

The SF MOMA does not have free parking. In fact, parking is rather expensive, at $26 for 10 hours or less. But the bigger problem is that parking for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art can fill up quickly, so you’re better off taking public transportation to reach the museum.

The closest BART station is the Montgomery Station Stop, which is about a six-minute walk to the museum. If you prefer to take the Muni Light Rail (which uses the same Clipper transit card as BART), you’ll get off at the Union Square/Market Street MUNI Metro Station (200 Geary St, San Francisco, CA 94102), which is .4 miles from the museum entrance. You can also take San Francisco’s famous cable cars to reach the museum, though the walk is slightly longer (roughly 10 minutes from the Powell  & O’Farrell streets station).

What are other things to do near SF MOMA?Chinatown SF San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

If you have free time in the day after visiting the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, consider seeing some of the other things to do in San Francisco. You can check out other San Francisco museums (including the Cable Car Museum, which is about .4 miles away and completely free). But if you want something besides museums, you could visit Yerba Buena Gardens, a peaceful outdoor area with a festival going on all summer long. It’s a five-minute walk from the SF MOMA.

Also close is Union Square, about .4 miles away. It’s a top shopping area and has plenty of nearby dining, plus excellent people watching. You could also head to Chinatown, which is the oldest predominately Chinese neighborhood anywhere in the US. It’s massive and filled with great restaurants, unique stores and artist galleries, and lots of traditional architecture. Of course, you could always just head to the Ferry Building to snag a delicious Blue Bottle Coffee before walking along the waterfront. It’s San Francisco, so you’ll have no shortage of things to do.

San Francisco isn’t a huge city, but heavy traffic can make it hard to get around if you have to rely on ride shares. So it’s probably best to try to stay near the SF MOMA if that’s what you’re there to see. You can find lots of San Francisco Airbnbs throughout the city, and if you’re traveling with Fido, you’ll be happy to know many of SF’s hotels are dog-friendly.

Otherwise, the two options below are great picks.

7 International Direct Flights From Houston, Starting Under $250

As the fifth largest city in the nation, Houston is a sprawling landscape of impressively engineered roadways, parks, and suburbs, all anchored by a thriving city. More than 124,000 people moved there in 2022, and getting around, particularly during rush hour, can try one’s patience.

Fortunately, Houston has two airports to handle flights from all those residents. There’s one on the city’s northern perimeter, and one to the south. The two locations help alleviate airport traffic and provide quite different experiences for travelers. And between the two, they offer plenty of non-stop flights from Houston to destinations ranging from the tropics to exciting European cities.

Here are the top international flights from Houston, selected for their short flight times and spectacular access to locales you won’t want to miss.

Flights from Houston out of George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH)

Houston’s largest airport is about 23 miles north of downtown Houston, has five terminals, and is a hub for United Airlines. In 2020, IAH was ranked “Best US Airport” by the World Airport Awards. Alas, that was the same year major construction began on the C North Concourse. Ever since, ongoing construction on the E Concourse (the primary international terminal) has diverted passenger drop-offs to C, causing congestion, delays, and frustration.

Fortunately, it’s scheduled to be completed in late 2024, and will eventually lead to a more streamlined and updated airport. In the meantime, leave plenty of time to get to and through IAH. Once you board your direct flight to these locations, you can relax knowing vacation is just a few hours away. Getting TSA Precheck will, of course, help speed up the process.

Zihuatanejo, Mexicoflights from houston - mexico

Flight time: 2 hours, 25 minutesAirlines: Aerobus, AeroMexico, UnitedLowest round-trip price in 2023: $238 (Autumn)

Known as the paradise Andy and Ellis dreamed about in “Shawshank Redemption,” Zihuatanejo in the state of Guerrero is less of a hop, skip, and jump from Houston, and more of just a hop. In less time than you’ll have to watch the movie (less than 2.5 hours from wheels up to wheels down), you’ll land at Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport. You’ll emerge on the tarmac, feel the sun on your face, and take a short walk past saguaro cacti and desert flowers into the small airport. After a quick check-in, you’re on your way.

In 19 minutes, you’ll be in the center of town, but you can be checked into a room at the Thompson Hotel and Beach Resort in less than 15. From there, it’s steps to the most beautiful and popular beach, Playa La Ropa. This stretch of sand is dotted with just enough restaurants and bars to kick off your vacation right.

When you want a little more action, head to the pier and hire a boat for the day. Diving and snorkeling are excellent, and from December through March, Zihua is a fantastic place to gasp at humpback whales. And don’t miss one of Zihau’s fantastic little quirks: Mexican pozole, a traditional spiced Mexican stew served in a number of restaurants… but only on Thursdays.

Vancouver, Canadaflights from houston - whale near vancouver

Flight time: 4 hours, 45 minutesAirlines: Air Canada, UnitedLowest round-trip price in 2023: $449 (mostly all year)

While Vancouver isn’t tropical, it is a fantastic city. And a direct flight from Houston will get you to Vancouver, in British Columbia, in just a few hours. In Vancouver, you can spend days  exploring Stanley Park, go whale watching from Granville Island, or explore the city’s fantastic museums and art. Visit in the middle of summer, and you can snag tickets to the massive PNE festival — a huge fair with world-class bands, rides, tons of great food, and plenty of cool exhibits and displays.

Visit in the winter, and you have the best of both worlds: you’re just a 90-minute drive from skiing at Whistler but you don’t have to worry about snow while you’re sightseeing in Vancouver. You can also snag a ferry from Vancouver to Nanaimo or Victoria on nearby Vancouver Island, or explore some of the country’s best mountain biking trails at Mount Fromme. You’re also close to hiking, with gorgeous trails at nearby mountains like Cypress Mountain.

And don’t forget about Vancouver’s famously diverse food scene — you’ll find especially good ramen, which can be a little trickier to locate in Houston. If wine is more your thing, go just south of the city to visit one of the best wine regions in Canada (the Okanagan Valley). The destinations has an extremely different feel than Houston, making it an excellent getaway when you need a change of pace.

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islandsflights from houston -grand cayman turtle

Flight time: 3 hoursAirlines: UnitedLowest round-trip price in 2023: $588 (July)

The largest and best known of the three Cayman Islands, Grand Cayman is way more than just an offshore banking hub. This 22-mile-long island is a paradise in its own right, and Owen Roberts International Airport is easy to reach via a direct flight from Houston on United.

Several car services pick up from the airport and can bring you to your choice of hotels on the gorgeous 7 Mile Beach in less than 20 minutes. The most popular of several beaches that line the perimeter of this island, 7 Mile has breathtaking white sand and every water sport activity you can imagine, from snorkeling to scuba diving to sunset catamaran tours.

The Caymanian culture is also a draw. Check out the National Museum featuring colorful local art, eat traditional dishes at Anchor & Den, or mail a postcard from Hell. It’s a in West Bay named for the jagged, black limestone formations jutting up from a field that look a bit like flames jumping up from the underworld. Some say it’s called Hell because it’s the only place in Grand Cayman where you can’t see the sea.

You’ll have no shortage of places to stay, including several dive resorts if that’s your thing. But a stay at The Westin Grand Cayman means you can reserve the double decker beach cabana with views out over the endless ocean. You can sip on an icy mudslide (said to have been invented on the island) and contemplate how easy it was to get there on your direct flight from Houston.

Flight time: 12 hoursAirlines: Turkish AirlinesLowest round-trip price in 2023: $1,185 (August)

Istanbul might be a long flight from Houston, but on Turkish Airlines, it opens up a few possibilities for the long-haul traveler. One is to make Istanbul your destination, as there’s certainly enough to see and do in the melting-pot city of culture, history, and architecture. But Istanbul Airport also offers something unique to those laying over on a longer flight to say, Maldives: a free tour of the city.

Touristanbul, operated through Turkish Airlines, provides a variety of tours for anyone with a layover between six hours and a full day. Locate the Touristanbul desk in the airport, leave your luggage behind, and visit the city’s Blue Mosque, Hippodrome, and Hagia Sophia, three of many more sites you’ll explore with a local guide. Then, you’ll be returned to the airport to catch your connection, all entirely free of charge.

Even if you can’t take advantage of this program, Istanbul Airport is something to behold. Between its unbelievably posh lounges, top-notch restaurants (whatever you do, try the baklava), designer shopping, and even a few museum, you’ll have plenty to do while waiting for your connection.

Flights from Houston out of William P. Hobby Airport

Just south of the city, Hobby Airport is the smaller, more easily navigable airport. Traffic is lighter, parking is ample, and getting through the airport is much quicker than flying from IAH. Hobby is a hub for Southwest, which happens to be the only airline that flies direct international flights from Houston from the airport. Since Texas borders Mexico, it makes sense that top destinations include Cozumel, Cabo San Lucas, and Cancún. But for the slightly more adventurous, the three island destinations below are more exciting options.

Montego Bay, Jamaicaflights from houston - rafting near montego bay

Photo: LBSimms Photography/Shutterstock

Flight time: 3 hoursAirlines: SouthwestLowest one-way price in 2023: $264 (August)

In 1978, Jamaica pioneered the concept of the couples-only, all-inclusive resort. And over the years, the island has become synonymous with the concept. It began in Montego Bay, home to Sangster International Airport. And as a result, “Mo Bay,” as the locals call it, is incredible easy to reach. It’s one of the most popular direct flights from Houston.

Just minutes from the airport, the iconic Sandals Resort Montego Bay makes light of the constant overhead flights, with a tradition of having guests wave goodbye to the poor schmucks who have to leave the island paradise.

Jamaica is lush, green, and, unlike many of its Caribbean counterparts, mountainous. Those Blue Mountains grow some phenomenal coffee, but the local Appleton Estate rum is even more popular. If you’d like to go farther out than Montego Bay, Negril is about 52 miles from the airport and where you go for renowned beaches and cliff diving. On the eastern side of the island, you’ll find the infamous Dunn’s River Falls in Ocho Rios, and on the way, Rose Hall is an excellent place to visit for a round of golf or a tour of the historic house.

San Jose, Costa Ricacosta rica parrots

Photo: jeep5d/Shutterstock

Flight time: 2 hoursAirlines: SouthwestLowest one-way price in 2023: $268 (November)

Most people head straight for a beach community when they arrive in San Jose, but the city itself is worth some attention. When you arrive at Juan Santamaria International Airport, you’re 20 miles west of downtown San Jose. It’s an easy drive to the National Museum and Children’s Museum, or to catch a live performance at the National Theater. Before hitting the beach, take some time to soak in the culture and learn about the history of Costa Rica.

From San Jose, head to Arenal Volcano, less than 50 miles away. This 5,437-foot-tall volcano was once Costa Rica’s most active, but it’s now a national park. It’s a high-adventure introduction to this country. Hike to La Fortuna waterfall, shoot the rapids, walk across a hanging bridge, or float and fish. Or just gaze up at the majesty of a volcano that reaches into the clouds. You can also soak in any number of natural hot springs.

Of course, you head to Costa Rica for the beaches, and you have more than 200 to choose from. When you’re done spending time in the turquoise water, be sure to try a few kinds of fresh-caught ceviche. Costa Rica has arguably some of the most beautiful waterfront in the world, and a catamaran snorkeling tour (ideally with a beach BBQ afterward) is a must-do.

Belize City, Belizeflights from houston - caye caulker belize

Photo: Marek Poplawski/Shutterstock

Flight time: 2 hours 20 minutesAirlines: SouthwestLowest one-way price in 2023: $182 (August)

A short flight on Southwest will get you out of the concrete jungle — and into a real one. Lush, green rainforests make up a vast portion of Belize, but rich cultural experiences await as well. Flights from Houston land at Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport, and there’s plenty to do nearby.

Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary is the perfect introduction to rainforest life. Considered one of the best bird sanctuaries in Central America, it’s also an optimal vantage point for getting an overview of the many lagoons prevalent in Belize.

Another great activity is hopping on a boat to take you down the Monkey River and past red mangroves. And keep your eyes peeled: in the trees, you’ll spot monkeys and tropical birds; and down below, you’ll see crocodiles and manatees. Several tours will take you through dense jungles that open up to massive Mayan ruins like Altun Ha, just outside the city.

To cool off, hit the coast. Caye Caulker is a great place to base yourself and accessible via a quick ferry ride from Belize City. Certified divers can dive the Blue Hole and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, or you can snorkel with stingrays and nurse sharks in Shark Ray Alley. You can do virtually anything here, from cave tubing by helmet light to ziplining and tearing it up on an ATV.

8 Underrated Smithsonian Museums, Galleries, and Gardens You Should Visit in DC

In Washington, DC, the Smithsonian Institution runs a large network of world-class museums. The network owes its existence to James Smithson, a British scientist who died in 1829 and left his fortune to the capital of the young American republic.

What started as one man’s wish has turned into one of the most renowned museums and research institutions in the world. Smithson never visited DC or the United States (at least not until after his death — his remains lie in a dedicated crypt on Smithsonian grounds today), but his impact on the country has been felt by countless people.

Many of the Smithsonian museums are justifiably famous, while others are unfairly obscure to the average visitor. Out of the 21 Smithsonian museums and galleries (as well as a zoo), these TK Smithsonian sites warrant more attention on your next visit to the nation’s capital.

Of all the Smithsonian garden spaces in DC, the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden deserves a special mention. Here, you’ll find priceless works by Auguste Rodin and Yayoi Kusama, as well as Yoko Ono’s wish tree.

Located in Washington’s Chinatown neighborhood, the National Portrait Gallery exists so that visitors can “experience portraiture beyond the frame.” The space has the only complete set of presidential portraits in the US outside of the White House (a mere eight blocks away). But the presidential portraits are just one facet of a much larger collection that includes depictions of Marilyn Monroe, Venus and Serena Williams, and many more. The space has evolved from its former paintings-only policy to show portraits in photography, sculpture, and video.

Much more than a collection of stamps, the National Postal Museum tells the multi-layered story of the postal service in the United States, from Colonial America until now, thanks to a large collection of objects, including vehicles that have carried the mail (like the first post office bus), mailboxes, letter carrier uniforms, advertisements, and more.

Hours of operation: The National Postal Museum is open daily from 10 AM to 5:30 PM.

Summertime in Washington brings the capital’s green spaces to full bloom, and nowhere is this more true than in the Smithsonian Gardens. The Smithsonian Gardens is a 13-site group of outdoor zones for domestic and exotic plant life. Standout locations include the Ripley Garden, with its serpentine brick walkways and wide variety of plants; the Haupt Garden, which has large magnolia trees that are particularly beautiful in the early spring; and the Landscape of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, where the plants were chosen to symbolize optimism, resiliency, and strength.

Hours of operation: All of the Smithsonian Gardens remain open 24 hours, except for the Haupt Garden which is open daily from dawn to dusk and closed on December 25.

Smithsonian Institution BuildingThe Smithsonian Institution Building also known as The Castle

Photo: Rob Crandall/Shutterstock

It’s easy to understand why the Smithsonian Institution Building is also known as The Castle. With its red stone facade and soaring turrets, the landmark on the National Mall has long delighted children and adults alike. Completed in 1855, the building houses the Smithsonian Visitor Center, the nerve center for the Smithsonian network. The site offers guidance on how to see and enjoy Washington, whether inside or outside the Smithsonian system of public spaces.

5 People Who Successfully Used AI To Plan Their Travel and How They Did It

In the space of just a few months, it seems artificial intelligence has reshaped the way we travel. Quite literally, it’s changing where we go and what we do, in ways many of us couldn’t have imagined just a year ago. Like most of us, chances are your feelings about AI are mixed. Maybe you’re excited by its potential to make human lives easier, but frightened by its potential to…well, make humans obsolete. Whatever your stance may be – and there are certainly plenty of valid concerns out there – it’s undeniable that AI is innovating travel like few technologies before it.

That’s especially true when it comes to travel concierges. Matador Network is pioneering the AI travel concierge space with GuideGeek, an AI-assisted WhatsApp app that launched last month. GuideGeek draws from a broad database of knowledge to inform travelers about anything they might want to know, including the best places to eat, most beautiful parks for hiking, trendiest bars, and coolest beaches. It won’t replace the personal recommendations of trusted family and friends, but it does take the endless Googling out of travel planning and gives you a valuable tool at the tip of your fingers.

And it’s catching on fast. Thousands of travelers are now not only using GuideGeek, but relying on the app to plan their trips. Some are even letting GuideGeek take the wheel completely, empowering it to make every travel decision for them: where to fly, eat, stay, and more.

After putting GuideGeek to the ultimate test, here’s what those travelers had to say.

Aaron Barnes

Aaron Barnes showed up at the airport with no flights booked, and simply let AI decide his entire trip. He asked GuideGeek for a random state in the US to fly to for 24 hours, and the result? Las Vegas. He followed the app’s food recommendations, ending up at a hidden pizza place, and even hotel recommendations, which landed him in a circus-themed hotel.

@aaronb_tv Cannot believe how this ended 😭 #guidegeek #travelAI #matadorcreator ♬ original sound – Aaron Barnes

Alexa

Alexa isn’t traveling very far. She let GuideGeek tell her what to do and eat in her hometown of Arlington, Virginia. She simply asked GuideGeek for a one-day itinerary with “great views, fun activities, and some local food.” It ended up recommending her favorite coffee shop (so that was a no-brainer), picked a classic local breakfast spot, and even sent her to the Netherlands Carillon, a belltower Alexa had never heard of before, even though she’s an Arlington native. One paint-and-sip experience and park picnic later, and she’d had a full day exploring a new side of her hometown.

@lilmsawkward Can AI really plan the perfect day for you? Absolutely. I had so much fun exploring my hometown with GuideGeek through WhatsApp. You can use the link in my bio to use GuideGeek for your next trip, or just connect to the AI (it’s Free!) on GuideGeek.com ! #GuideGeek #travelai #traveltips #itineraryplanning #arlingtonva #MatadorCreator ♬ original sound – Alexa | Travel Creator

Dasha

Dasha spent a whole day in Kyoto, Japan, using nothing but AI recommendations. It guided her to a traditional Japanese breakfast, followed by a shine (and a detailed app-driven description of what she was seeing), the Kiyomizu-dera temple with views of the city, and the narrow shop-lined streets of the Gion district.

@dashakofman Letting the GuideGeek AI travel assistant control my day in Japan #ai #travelai #planningreavel #tiktoktravelai #guidegeek ♬ original sound – Dasha | Travel

Jake Marsee

Like Dasha, Jake also used GuideGeek in Japan. First, he asked it for flight options during his chosen travel dates, and it churned out a couple options sorted by “best,” “fastest,” and “cheapest,” along with links to book. He then asked for a seven-day itinerary in Tokyo, which helped inform his travel experience.

@jakemarsee It’s like having a mini tour guide in your pocket it’s awesome😂#guidegeek #travel #budgettravel #matadorcreator @Guide Geek ♬ original sound – Jake Marsee

Chloe Jade Meltzer

Chloe entrusted GuideGeek with her trip to China. Because she was on the 144-hour tourist visa, she was limited to one specific region of China during her visit, and needed to know what, exactly, to do there. GuideGeek came up with plenty of ways for her to fill her days, including Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, the Great Wall of China, Tianjin, and Michelin-star restaurants in Beijing.
