These Trains Take You From Prague To 2023’s Best City To Live In

It’s incredibly easy to visit most of Europe by train. You can go from Edinburgh to London in just a few hours by high-speed train; travel from London to Amsterdam, Paris, or Brussels via the world’s longest underwater tunnel in a flash; and branch out from there to just about anywhere on the continent: Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Italy — you name it. If you’ve made it all the way to the beautiful city of Prague by train (via Berlin, maybe?), don’t stop your rail travels just yet — you can zip from there to Vienna, voted the world’s most liveable city for several years in a row. There are plenty of Prague to Vienna trains to keep you on the move.

Spending three days in Vienna is ideal if you want a quick overview of the city. In three days, you’ll start to understand why the city is voted the most liveable city in the world year after year, and you’ll get to see the main sights without feeling too rushed. Focus on the Innere Stadt district, the core of Vienna, where you’ll see the iconic Hofburg, the former Imperial Palace that’s now the official seat of the Austrian head of state; the Opera House where you can catch a show; the massive St. Charles’s Church, and The MuseumsQuartier (MQ) a huge area where you’ll find a variety of museums, restaurants, cafés, and stores. Between cultural visits, make sure to visit as many Viennese cafés as possible and indulge in as many slices of sachertortes as you deem sufficient — it’s just as culturally important as seeing Klimt’s “The Kiss” at the Belvedere Museum.

The Kempinski brings a little sophistication to the Hotel Zone and is among the best in Cancún. Its location is unbeatable. Minutes from high-end dining and shopping and less than half an hour away from the airport, and to top it off, it sits on one of the best stretches of sand.

The Kempinski brand took over the property from the Ritz-Carlton in 2022 and it has a very loyal following. This is mainly due to the service. There’s a huge team of friendly and attentive staff in every department. Which is great because there are a lot of amenities to cover here. The best time to visit the Statue of Liberty

Timing is key. The best time to visit is early in the morning, preferably on the first ferry of the day. This will help you avoid the crowds that tend to gather later in the day. The park, which includes Ellis Island and Liberty Island, is open from 9:00 AM until 5:45 PM daily. It’s recommended to budget at least two hours for your visit to the Statue of Liberty and an additional hour if you plan to visit Ellis Island as well. To ensure access and avoid disappointment, it’s highly advised to book your tickets in advance.

Subway stations are also a breeze or you can hop on the ferry. The Marriott has views of the statue from only some rooms, so if that’s a deal breaker, contact the hotel for more information on what is available.

This is a good option if you’re willing to do a little legwork. The hotel offers super competitive rates, especially if you’re visiting during the shoulder season and mid-week. That’s mainly due to its size. It’s spread over 38 floors with 506 guest rooms and seven suites. You’ll mainly find corporate travelers here, but if you’re an individual traveler who has brand alliance, or want something reliable next to major city sights, this is a stable option.

Where is the best place to see the Statue of Liberty on land?

There are several notable spots that offer fantastic views. The Battery, formerly known as Battery Park, located on the southern tip of Lower Manhattan, is an excellent vantage point. Not only does it provide fabulous views of the New York Harbor, but it also allows you to take in sights of Governor’s Island, Brooklyn, the New Jersey Shore, and the Verrazano Bridge.

Brooklyn Heights Promenade, perched above the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and facing out onto the New York Harbor, also offers a lovely view. Another free viewpoint can be found at the Battery Park City Esplanade, while the One World Observatory provides a higher perspective.

Spain’s Largest Urban Park Runs Through Valencia Like a River (And 5 More Must-See Parks in Valencia)

When ancient Romans founded Valencia, Spain, the city was built around the Turia River. The Turia River no longer runs through Valencia. In its place, a beautiful urban park snakes more than five-and-a-half miles through Spain’s third-largest city.

The history of the park, Jardín del Turia, began with a tragedy. In 1957, a flood caused by the Turia River wreaked havoc on Valencia, a city that was historically plagued by floods. In response to the disaster, the Spanish government and then-mayor of Valencia concocted a plan to divert the river outside of the city bounds.

The plan to reroute the river was completed in 1969, leaving behind a dry riverbed in the middle of the city. Initially, a highway was proposed to occupy the space, but Valencians quickly rejected the idea in favor of creating a green space where the river once ran. The city complied.

Photo: Aleksandr Medvedkov/Shutterstock

That green space is now the Jardín del Turia, which at more than 250 acres is Spain’s largest urban park. Its development enlisted the work of various urban planners and landscapers to tackle different sections of the park, aiming to recreate the natural beauty that the river once bestowed upon the city. The result is an oasis of green grass and rose bushes; palm, orange, and pine trees; fountains; ponds; and a variety of recreational facilities.

Today, Jardín del Turia is a cherished green space in Valencia and an icon of the city, but it’s not the only one. There are several gardens and parks in Valencia that double as leading attractions. These are the most beautiful Valencia parks and gardens to see on your next visit.

Cabecera Parkparks-in-valencia

Photo: Joaquin Corbalan P/Shutterstock

Cabecera Park picks up where the Jardín del Turia ends, located midway between the Balearic coast and Valencia’s airport. A more traditional park, the oblong green space adds another 80-plus acres of greenery to the cityscape. Like the Jardín del Turia, Cabecera Park occupies part of the former riverbed, and it’s actually incorporated a central water feature in the shape of a lake that’s popular for boating. But if you ask many Valencians, especially those with kids, they’ll say the real highlight of Cabecera Park is its Bioparc, Valencia’s largest zoological park. In addition to mountain views, serene woodlands, and an up-and-coming amusement park, Cabecera Park also has a few cafes and restaurants where you can stop for tapas with a view.

Parque Centralparks-in-valencia

Photo: oscarmendezph/Shutterstock

Valencia is a city that continually strives to improve and reinvent itself through large-scale urban development programs. Jardín del Turia, Cabecera Park, and Parque Central are all testaments to that. Still under development, Parque Central was envisioned as a relaxing green space that doubles as a social hub in Valencia. Its location was chosen between youthful Ruzafa and sleepy Malilla, bridging two neighborhoods that were previously divided by railway lines. The park currently spans more than 25 acres of paths, promenades, landscaped spaces, and art installations, as well as relics of the old railway tracks.

Botanical Garden of Valenciaparks-in-valencia

Photo: PetraPhoto/Shutterstock

Though Valencia’s popular botanical garden belongs to the University of Valencia, it’s an attraction that feels like it belongs to the whole city (although visitors will need to fork over $3 to gain access to the garden). The garden has a long history of use as an educational venue, beginning in the 16th century when it became a center for botanical studies. The current garden began to take shape in the 19th century when the second iteration of the orchard, the Tramoveres Orchard, expanded both physically and in its collection. Today, the botanical garden houses a diverse array of plants, notably palms and desert flora, as well as beautiful greenhouses, a section dedicated to aquatic plants, an aviary, a shade garden, and more.

Viveros Gardensparks-in-valencia

Photo: REDMASON/Shutterstock

The Viveros Gardens go by many names. They’re also known as the Jardines del Real and Royal Gardens, with the name viveros coming from the Spanish word for “nurseries” after the gardens were given to the city as a horticultural center in 1903. The original gardens date all the way back to the 11th century. In addition to beautiful flora, artistic and historic attractions pepper today’s gardens, including a series of statues depicting Greco-Roman gods, a farmhouse that epitomizes Valencian architecture, and the restored facade of an old palace. The National Science Museum of Valencia is also located within Viveros Gardens.

Monforte Gardensparks-in-valencia

Photo: PetraPhoto/Shutterstock

Nestled in the space between where the Jardín del Turia meets the Viveros Gardens, Monforte Gardens, or L’Hort de Romero, are Valencia’s oldest gardens. They date back to 1849 when a marquis named Juan Bautista Romero bought an orchard that once belonged to a baron and created a beautiful floral space around the mansion there. The site was declared a National Artistic Garden in 1941 but was not designated as a public green space until 1973. Part neoclassical, part naturalist, the garden has a grand and classical look that’s enhanced by design elements such as statues, pools, and fountains in addition to different floral attractions, including a rose garden and a gallery with climbing plants.

Where to stay near Valencia’s parks

Because the Jardín del Turia cuts all the way across central Valencia — from the coast, skirting the Old Town, and farther inland — pretty much all of the city’s best hotels are located within distance of it. Many of them hug the boundary of the park. Add in the rest of the city’s parks and the wealth of Valencia Airbnbs you have the option to book, and you’ll have no problem finding accommodation near the finest parks in Valencia. If a nice hotel near Valencia’s parks is your preference, here are a few of the best to get you started on your search.

Doing Nothing Means Everything at The Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico

Pulling into the sprawling lush gardens of the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico, I was warmly welcomed by the island breeze and swaying coconut trees dotting the resort’s 72 acre peninsula. There was a hum of excitement in the air in anticipation of the sandy beachfront and rainforest adventures that awaited me during my stay. Stepping out of the car and into the open-air lobby, I was immediately embraced by the staff who quickly whisked me away to my villa, where I would unwind for the next three nights.

Inside my second story villa, sunlight cast a golden glow over the living room, while a delightful craft-your-own blueberry lemonade welcome cocktail awaited me — a refreshing blend of hibiscus, fresh basil, lemon juice, and Grey Goose vodka. To my pleasant surprise, I found an invitation from the resort, encouraging me to disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with myself. So, with a drink in hand, I stepped out onto the patio, ready to embark on that journey.

As a first-time visitor to Puerto Rico, I was eager to explore all the wonders the island had to offer. Yet a part of me yearned for the luxury of doing nothing and having all day to indulge in that. This trip was a special girls’ getaway with my mother, where we sought to relax and unwind. As I’d learn over the next few days, we were in the perfect place to do just that.

A vacation is about embracing the freedom of no obligations and all day to revel in that privilege. The resort offers ample grounds that allow you to immerse yourself in the essence, sounds, textures, and flavors of paradise. Nestled on Coco Beach, the surroundings are truly captivating, with lush gardens enveloping the bright white bungalows and villas with the picturesque backdrop of the El Yunque National Rainforest in the distance. With so much space to call your own, the property never feels crowded. You could always find your own slice of paradise along the beachfront, or in one of the corners of the many property pools.

Photo: Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico

The sheer size of the reserve is worthy of driving from point A to point B, offering guests the option of requesting a golf cart from the front desk at any time of day to carry you off to or from your bungalow or villa. Despite the lovely convenience, I found myself choosing to explore on foot, enjoying the sight of native blue lizards scurrying around the gardens and distant sounds of the ocean waves. The open-air concept of the property added an extra layer of enjoyment as I leisurely wandered at my own pace, fully embracing the laid-back island time and warm Caribbean breeze.

The newest addition to the property’s luxury offerings, the Villas en la Reserva, provide a spacious and contemporary retreat tailored for larger groups of family and friends. Tucked away in a secluded corner of the peninsula, these villas showcase sleek and modern design, pristine tile floors, private balconies that overlook a garden adorned with swaying palm trees and stunning views of the La Reserva pool or expansive ocean views in the distance. Complete with a well-equipped kitchenette, a dining table, a comfortable living room, and a cozy bedroom, these villas provided everything one could possibly need, with plenty of space to spare.

My sprawling 685-square-foot villa was thoughtfully appointed, featuring a plush king bed, a separate living area with a queen sleeper sofa, a convenient kitchenette with a fridge, plus a covered balcony that offered serene panoramic views. The bathroom was a delightful surprise, boasting not only a separate shower but also a luxurious jetted tub and exceptionally large closet space. And I must admit, one of the unexpected luxuries was having two toilets. The indulgence of the deep-soaking tub and the refreshing rainfall shower made my stay all the more rejuvenating.

There is a place to gather, to inspire, and to create at the resort. Inspired by a guest who had stayed on property and found joy in the simple pleasures of hunting for seashells and soaking up the sun, the sales and marketing team recently crafted their take on hotel programming. How many times have you answered “nothing” when asked what you did on your vacation? Centered around the concept that “doing nothing means everything,” offerings onsite are fully customizable. You won’t find a rigid programming schedule here, but instead an invitation to design your own vacation experience as active or relaxing as you desire.

My favorite moments were spent poolside catching up with my mom and watching, together, as the colorful sunset took over the sky at golden hour. Also up there: the pan sobao (sweet bread) experience delivered to my villa door. Following a knock, I was greeted by the resort’s chef rolling breakfast to my door. Proofed for 24 hours, followed by 24 hours of rising, this special Puerto Rican bread came accompanied by warm honey butter and queso de bola. The best part? Fresh roasted Puerto Rican coffee, your choice of strong or mild, with brown sugar and milk. This hand-delivered, melt in your mouth breakfast was next-level.

Guests can enjoy their own pan sobao experience or inquire with the concierge about other available options, including a private hilltop sunset picnic or dinner on the beach. Whatever you dream of, the team is available to bring your vision to life. Spend the afternoon swinging in your own beachside hammock or stroll along the private beachfront to discover the property’s very own tree swing and collect seashells along the shore. Lounge around the property’s four pools, including the largest lagoon-style pool on the island or reserve an appointment at the Rainforest Spa for a relaxing, indulgent massage.

If keeping active is more your style, there are plenty of activities for the whole family to experience onsite. Challenge each other to a ping pong or cornhole tournament, or stop by the Topgolf Swing Suite featuring four bays with high-tech soccer, golf, hockey, baseball, and more games. Guests also have access to a range of complimentary activities, including tennis, pickleball, volleyball, and non-motorized water sports. As the day winds down, the open-air lobby bar comes alive with the captivating melodies of live music, providing the perfect ambiance to bring the day to a close.

Dining at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Ricopool bar hyatt regency grand reserve

Photo: Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico

The property has nine restaurants and two bars if you count the two available food trucks, making up for the fact that the resort is quite removed from off-site restaurants on the island. Resort food can be hit or miss, often leaving me uninspired — which is why I usually choose to eat off property. The Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico is an exception. I was pleasantly surprised by all of the al-a-carte dining options I had onsite at the resort.

For breakfast, you can choose from in-room dining or Water’s Edge, a casual family-style restaurant with an expansive breakfast buffet and indoor/outdoor seating. Make-your-own omelets, fresh juice, fruits, and coffee are aplenty. You can also stop by The Market for specialty coffee and grab your selection of gourmet snacks. The grab-and-go convenience was ideal for my final morning at the resort, allowing me to enjoy my spinach egg white wrap, red velvet muffin, and refreshing iced frappuccino poolside.

For lunch, my favorite option was Rincon Criollo, a food truck with a variety of delicious salads, burgers, and local favorites, plus drinks with ocean views. Right by the main pool, our food was delivered to our lounge chairs for a picture-perfect poolside break.

Dinner options around the resort are aplenty. Nori Asian Grill specializes in sushi, sashimi, and a variety of Pacific Rim cuisine. The hibachi experience made for a lively night out with the charismatic chef taking center stage, skillfully flipping utensils, juggling ingredients, and tossing bites into our mouths from across the sizzling teppanyaki grill. If you’re a spice-lover like me, you’ll enjoy the spicy chicken fried rice. Among the culinary offerings at the resort, my absolute favorite was Prime 787, the resort’s contemporary take on the traditional American Steakhouse. With delicious cuts of beef cooked to perfection, elevated seafood, fine wine, and buttery Puerto Rican bread, this was a dinner to remember.

Other on-property options include:

Nectar: Traditional local cuisine that combines flavors and colors from Puerto Rico.La Mina: An open-air restaurant located in the interior courtyard of Villas en la Reserve, offering ocean views and seafood with a Puerto Rican flare.Lobby Bar: A casual open-air destination for an extensive assortment of expertly mixed cocktails, including speciality rums and classics with a twist.Martini Bar: Nestled between Prime 787 & Nori Asian restaurant, this uniquely sparkling bar serves prohibition-style cocktails and Asian-inspired creations.Sand Trap Bar & Grill: A laid-back venue for American classics, local delights, and brews, plus loads of interactive entertainment.Exploring Rio Grande, Puerto RicoSmall cascade in El Yunque national forest, Puerto Rico

Removed from the bustle of Old San Juan, this area of Puerto Rico is quite secluded and perfect for unwinding away from the touristy parts of the island. Only 15 minutes from El Yunque National Forest, the resort is set in the perfect location for those planning on spending a lot of time exploring the rainforest (or doing nothing at all).

Not only does El Yunque hold the distinction of being the sole tropical rainforest within the US National Forest System, but it also carries profound cultural significance in Puerto Rico. Known for its misty clouds that envelop majestic peaks, this national treasure beckons nature enthusiasts, inviting them to immerse themselves in its wonders, from the natural pools and cascading waterfalls to the breathtaking hiking trails and awe-inspiring vistas. Stop by La Coca Falls for a look at the stunning 85-foot waterfall before making your way to the enchanting La Coca Trail. One of the most sought-after activities in El Yunque is embarking on one of many invigorating hikes and this one leads you to a series of picturesque points along the route. For something a bit more strenuous, venture along the El Angelito trail, where a 2.5-mile trek rewards you with the thrill of a rope swing and a well-deserved plunge into its tranquil lagoon.

If you’re craving more adventure, take a scenic drive to the Yokahú Observation Tower. Standing tall at an elevation of 1,575 feet, this vantage point offers breathtaking panoramic views that are truly worth the journey. Spiral your way to the top to take in the mesmerizing expanse of the deep blue ocean in the distance and the lush, verdant mountains stretching as far as the eye can see. To add an extra rush of adrenaline, the Carabalí Rainforest Adventure Park offers fun-filled one and two hour ATV tours of the stunning foothills of El Yunque.

To ensure your visit to the highly popular El Yunque, be sure to book a reservation in advance. Only one reservation per vehicle is required, and it can be booked up to one month prior to your planned visit. For more spontaneous travelers, a limited number of reservations may be released 24 hours before opening to allow for some flexibility in your plans.

It’s an ideal spot for a romantic meal or a relaxed gathering with friends or family.

7 Adventure Travel Ideas for Your Escape To Belize

Droplets of water gather on the ice-cold Belikin beer on the table in front of you as you unwind after an adrenaline-pumping adventure through the jungles of Belize. It’s hard to believe that less than 24 hours ago you were in an airport lounge, while today you explored underwater cave systems, trekked to a hidden Maya city in the rainforest, or encountered the wild creatures that inhabit this captivating country.

Belize, on the northeastern coast of Central America, shares its borders with Mexico to the north, the Caribbean Sea to the east, and Guatemala to the west and south. It’s home to an abundance of wildlife reserves, diverse flora and fauna, and the most extensive cave system in Central America. On this trip, we’re steering clear of sunbathing and instead chasing seven budget- and eco-friendly escapades that’ll make your palms sweat.

1. Explore a 10,000-year-old collapsed cave system under the sea

We’d be remiss not to begin with Belize’s most famous tourist draw, the Great Blue Hole. And while renowned underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau dubbed it one of the world’s best dive sites in 1971, there are now myriad ways to explore this unique place. The super picturesque sinkhole is part of an underwater cave system that collapsed some 10,000 years ago and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Yes, the Great Blue Hole is a favorite among divers, but imagine sitting in a tiny six-seater plane flying over the formation and snapping the ultimate selfie. The 1.5-hour trip isn’t suitable for nervous fliers — the aircraft will drop to around 300 feet above the hole, where you almost feel you could skim your fingertips across the deep blue water. You might even spot a hammerhead shark lurking just below the surface.

2. Climb one of the tallest mountains in Belize

Immerse yourself in Belize’s diverse landscapes and unfiltered beauty as you bid farewell to the tourists on the islands and coast and head to the mountainous rainforest of the interior. Visit the country during the dry season, you’ll be able to experience the most challenging hike in Belize and scale one of its tallest mountains: a two-day, thigh-burning climb up Victoria Peak.

Start your hike from the world’s first jaguar preserve, the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, before taking on the challenging mountainous terrain to be rewarded with astounding views from above the clouds. Round off the hike with a detour through Mayflower Bocawina National Park, and, if your legs aren’t already exhausted, tackle on the 1.1-mile hike to Antelope Falls. Continue the climb alongside the fall’s multiple tiers until you make it to the deep green swimming hole, where the views across the jungle are absolutely worth the effort to get there.

3. Go spelunking through captivating caverns

Many of Belize’s cave systems remain unexplored, so spelunking here carries an extra bit of excitement. Thrill-seekers will love squeezing through the tightest crevices and scrambling through caverns filled with crystalline stalactites.

One of the most popular sites for cave exploration in Belize is the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave, located in Tapir Mountain Natural Reserve. In addition to incredible underground scenery, you might even stumble on Maya skeletons and pottery left behind by the region’s storied civilization. Just remember, this is a sacred place — go with a guide, don’t touch any artifacts you happen to come across, and there’s a strict no-camera policy.

4. Journey to the ancient Maya city of Xunantunich on horseback

At its height a millennium or more ago, the city of Xunantunich was home to around 200,000 people. The first ancient Maya site opened to the public, it sits about half a mile from the border with Guatemala and makes for an excellent destination for a trek on horseback.

Choose your four-legged friend and follow the banks of the Mopan River, through the jungles of San Jose Succotz, to the preserved ruins of the city. There are more than 25 Maya temples and palaces hidden deep in this forest. When you reach El Castillo, hike to the top of the 130-foot pyramid, and make sure to look for the carved friezes on the east and west sides.

5. Rappel down a jungle waterfall

Belize is home to some pretty spectacular waterfalls, and if you’re looking for a certain kind of rush, nothing beats waterfall rappelling. The aforementioned Antelope Falls in Bocawina National Park is also a popular spot for this adventure. With just a harness holding you steady in the gushing cascade, you’ll descend 250 feet — a truly unique way to experience Belize’s wild side.

6. Kayak the Macal River from San Ignacio

After all the hikes and spelunking, you might want to rest those legs — time to head to Western Belize to a town called San Ignacio. Stop at an eco-lodge on the river to pick up your kayak, then spend a day exploring the waterways and witnessing the wildlife that lines the banks, from giant iguanas to colorful birds to caves filled with bats. If you need to up the adrenaline quotient, look into a day of cave tubing and plunge into the dark via an underground river.

7. Zipline through the rainforest canopy

Photo: Ammit Jack/Shutterstock

Imagine soaring through the air on a zipline high above a valley in the beautiful Maya Mountain foothills. You’ll get to experience seven lines, including the longest zipline in Belize, plus 11 decks on the Mayan Sky Canopy Tour. And if you visit between January and March, you might catch a glimpse of rare scarlet macaws flying at the same height as the ziplines. Just like the other six adventure travel activities on this list, it’s an exhilarating Belize experience you won’t want to miss.
