Airbnbs in Traverse City to Get the Best of Michigan’s Cherry Season

Spring is springing across the Northern Hemisphere, luring us from hibernation with cherry blossoms, festivals, and the promise of summer fruits. There’s no sweeter place to enjoy all three than Michigan’s Traverse City – Cherry Capital of the World.

It starts with the bloom of cherry blossoms across the city and towards the fruit-growing plains of the Old Mission and Leelanau peninsulas. Ordinarily, the phenomenon occurs in mid-May but warmer conditions can push it to the first week of the month. A short and sweet hanami is followed by the National Cherry Festival in late June with cherry season peaking in July and August. During these months, you can pick your own cherries at Northern Michigan U-Pick farms and orchards and sample all kinds of cherry-based tarts. And, no prizes for guessing the star ingredient of the 50 local wineries.

A blossoming supply of designer homes and unique cabins make it easy to get out amid the meadows, orchards, and vineyards by car or bicycle. These beautiful Airbnbs in Traverse City, Michigan, are ripe for booking during cherry season.

What It’s Like to Ride on One of India’s Most Luxurious Train Cars

While the Maharajas’ Express is often considered as India’s most luxurious train, it’s certainly not the only high-end option for rail travel in the country. The lesser-known Palace on Wheels, operating since 1982, is a train that runs seven-night, eight-day trips in the state of Rajasthan in very opulent fashion.

The Palace on Wheels consists of 14 air-conditioned cars in which you’ll find two restaurants/dining cars, a spa where passengers can enjoy massages, a lounge car where travelers can socialize and relax, a bar car, as well as 39 Deluxe cabins and two Super Deluxe cabins.

@epic.stays This is the most luxurious train in #India 🤩 📍Heritage Palace on Wheels 🎥 @bruisedpassports #traveltiktok #indiatravel #traintravel ♬ original sound – Nostalgia

The cabins, much like the rest of the train, are decorated with antique furniture, high-quality ethnic Rajasthani textiles, arched and embellished ceilings, traditional artworks, and wooden panels that create an intimate but ritzy atmosphere. Each cabin has its own en suite bathroom equipped with toiletries, and travelers may choose between twin beds or double beds.

Itinerary of the Palace on Wheels

The Palace on Wheels offers seven-night, eight-day journeys that start from Delhi every Wednesday and include stops in Jaipur, Sawai Madhopur, Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bharatpur, and Agra, before closing the loop and returning to Delhi.

The train travels at night so that passengers can experience a new corner of Rajasthan every single day. Excursions are organized every day, including a visit of Ranthambhore National Park, a camel ride, a visit to Taj Mahal, lunches in five-star hotels, and many more extraordinary outings.

The price of traveling on board the Palace on Wheels

The cost of riding this very special train varies according to the time of year you wish to travel at, the type of cabin you stay in (Deluxe or Super Deluxe), and whether you’re traveling alone or as a pair (with traveling alone being more expensive).

Based on double occupancy, the price of a journey on board the Palace on Wheels starts at $4333 in a Deluxe cabin, and can reach up to $10,402 in a Super Deluxe cabin. Prices are available on the website, along with the schedule of operation.

Alaska Airlines Has a New $5-Per-Month Subscription Program With Questionable ‘Benefits’

We live in the era of subscriptions, and seemingly no industry is immune. Streaming, grocery shopping, ride hail companies — it feels like every business wants customers to not only pay for goods and services, but also pay a recurring amount for some purported added value. The airline industry is no different. Case in point: Alaska Airlines recently announced a new subscription called Alaska Access that balances out to $5 per month.

Alaska Access has three main offerings: one free in-flight WiFi voucher per month, early access to sales, and a personalized fare page.

The early access to sales is one of the primary benefits that Alaska Airlines is using to justify the need for Alaska Access. Which makes sense, because who doesn’t love saving on travel? Digging a little deeper though, the value might not be quite as, well, valuable as it appears on first glance.

Alaska Airlines qualifies that Alaska Access members only get early sales notifications for “some of our largest sales of the year” (emphasis mine). Alaska Access members get an alert on the Alaska Airlines app when those deals come up. The catch is that it only comes the night before anyone else can find the same sale. In reality, this means getting 12 nighttime hours to buy a discounted ticket to somewhere that you might not have had plans of traveling to already.

The airline says this “means you can pick your preferred flight times and seats before others begin taking advantage of the sale.” It’s safe to say that the type of person who wants an overnight jump on a sale is also in the small group of people who would take advantage of a sale immediately after it’s announced anyway. Any benefit to buying the night before rests on the assumption that the portion of sales events that Alaska Access members get early notifications for will sell out as soon as they’re announced.

Then there’s the third purported benefit: “a personalized fare page” to see Alaska’s “lowest fares by money and miles.” The airline adds that “this view takes the guesswork and time out of finding the best valued flights on Alaska Airlines.” At its core, it’s a calendar view of the lowest fares for destinations that you choose, similar to what you’d see when searching on Google Flights or through an online travel agency. Most, if not all, platforms that people can buy flights on already have the capability to list flights from lowest to highest price. The fact that there’s still “guesswork” involved in buying an Alaska Airlines flight at all is just as much of a concern as the fact that this sounds like anyone who isn’t an Alaska Access member will be guided to more expensive options instead of finding the right flight for them.

The more information I find on Alaska Access, the more I wonder who it’s for. The low cost means Alaska Access won’t be a meaningful addition to the airline’s bottom line unless mass hordes of people join in. As a frequent traveler in travel media, I’m not aware of anyone (even in the travel industry) who would find one free in-flight WiFi voucher per month plus overnight sale access worth a dedicated subscription. And it’s already easy to find the lowest airfare through free tools like Google Flights.

But there’s one more kicker. Buried in the FAQ section of the Alaska Access page is the note that “membership requires a 12-month commitment.” The cost isn’t high even when considering it’s a $60 commitment, not a $5 per month commitment. Still, how much better this is than the free loyalty programs out there is a real question. At least the year-long commitment means anyone who does try the membership will have 12 months to find a way to make it worth it.

10 Last-Minute Eclipse Home Rentals and Hotels Still Available

The most-hyped astronomical event of the last few years is almost upon us — so if you haven’t made plans for seeing it yet, you’re cutting it close.

The skies of North America are gearing up for a spectacular total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, visible along a narrow path stretching from Texas to Maine. During totality, the moon will completely block the sun’s surface, plunging the day into twilight for a brief but awe-inspiring period. This will be the last total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous United States for two decades, making it a truly rare sight.

If you’re lucky enough to be within the path of totality, all you need to do is follow a few simple steps (and source some eclipse-viewing glasses). But if you aren’t in the path of totality, you can be — as long as you book one of these eclipse home rentals or hotels in the path of the eclipse that are still available as of mid-March 2024.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon, much smaller than the sun but much closer to Earth, lines up perfectly between us and the sun. The moon is much smaller than the sun, but it’s also much closer to Earth, creating a kind of cosmic illusion that makes them look the same size. This alignment (and visual trick) allows the moon to completely obscure the sun’s bright face, casting a dark shadow on a specific path across Earth’s surface.

The Ultimate View House: Dallas, TXsolar eclipse hotels still available - dallas home

Photo: Booking.com

Sleeps: 10Number of bedrooms: 3Price for April 6-8, 2024: $416

The Ultimate View House is one of the most upscale eclipse home rentals still available in Dallas, Texas, that sits squarely in the path of the eclipse. While you can watch the eclipse from the home’s backyard or balconies, you may want to head a few miles away into downtown to party like a pro. The Downtown Dallas Association is hosting a multi-day Solar Eclipse Weekend Party, complete with art installations, parties, yoga classes, a street festival, and, of course, an eclipse watch party.

Book NowThe Whitetail Inn and Suites: Lincoln, MEstill available eclipse hotels - whitetail inn

Photo: Booking.com

Sleeps: 2+Number of bedrooms: Hotel roomsPrice for April 6-8, 2024: $214

The 2024 total solar eclipse will cross over Caribou, Maine — but that’s very far north, and it’s quite difficult to get there for just a few days. instead, consider booking a room at this adorable bed and breakfast roughly two hours south in Lincoln, Maine. It’s much easier to reach (there’s an airport in Bangor, about 50 miles away), and it’s darn cute, housed in a historic building from the 1920s. You also don’t have to drive all the way to Caribou to see the eclipse, as heading just an hour north will bring you into areas that will see near-totality — so the sun won’t be totally eclipsed, but it’ll be close to it.

Book NowRiverside Gables Bed and Breakfast: Berea, OHsolar eclipse hotels still available - bnb

Photo: Booking.com

Sleeps: 2+Number of bedrooms: Hotel roomsPrice for April 6-8, 2024: $437

Berea is a cute city about 15 miles southwest of Cleveland, so it’s a great place to stay if you want a sleepier environment, but with easy access to the city.

For the upcoming eclipse, Berea won’t be directly in the path of totality — but Cleveland will. So you can drive to Cleveland, or just stay in Berea, since it’ll still experience a very high percentage of totality (meaning the sun will be almost completely covered by the moon). If you do head to Cleveland, you may want to attend the “Total on the Oval” eclipse party, hosted by the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

Riverside Gables Bed and Breakfast is a cute little hotel with upscale, old-school rooms, plus on-site tennis and a large garden (ideal for eclipse viewing).

Book Now1895 Washington Hotel: Paducah, KYsolar eclipse hotels still available - paducah

Photo: Booking.com

Sleeps: 2+Number of bedrooms: Hotel roomsPrice for April 6-8, 2024: $800

If you’ve never been to Paducah, Kentucky, there’s no time like the present. It’s in western Ohio on the Ohio River, and fortunately, the cute 1895 Washington hotel is still available during the eclipse. And Paducah falls within the path of totality for the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8th. Public parks like Bob Noble Park or Riverfront Park could be good locations from which to view the eclipse, though the city is also a gateway to the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, a haven for outdoor enthusiasts that should have a great view of the sky (and excellent hiking).

Interestingly, the 1895 Washington Hotel is a living history museum, meaning staying there is like stepping back in time. The hotel was opened by descendants of US Founding Father George Washington, though it does have updates like high-end mattresses and jetted bathtubs.

Book NowCozy Country Cottage: Whitefield, NHlast-minute - NH cottage

Photo: Booking.com

Sleeps: 6Number of bedrooms: 3Price for April 6-8, 2024: $457

If you want to combine a stay at a last-minute eclipse hotel along with some outdoor adventure, you may want to head to New Hampshire. Whitefield is in the path of totality (the eclipse is predicted to go over Lancaster, NH, 10 miles north), and this eclipse home rental is in the woods, with plenty of space to watch the celestial event without crowds or urban noise. It’s also very close to both Franconia Notch State Park and Mount Washington, making it a great home rental for using the eclipse as an excuse for an early season snowshoe or hiking trip in New Hampshire.

Book NowBroadlake Home: Colchester, VT eclipse home rentals vermont broadlake

Sleeps: 8Number of bedrooms: 4Price for April 6-8, 2024: $763

Burlington is one of the coolest towns in the Northeast, combining outdoorsy-hippie vibes with plenty of farmers markets and artsy boutiques. It’s in the path of totality, but so is one of the coolest eclipse home rentals in Vermont: this pretty rental in Colchester, super close to Lake Champlain. It’s only 15 minutes north of Burlington and just 10 minutes from Burlington International Airport. It has four bedrooms, a patio, and a deck overlooking the water, creating a picture-perfect place to watch the eclipse in the later afternoon (perhaps with a local Vermont beer in hand).

Book NowNew Harmony Inn Resort and Conference Center: New Harmony, INnew harmony inn last minute eclipse hotel eclipse home rentals

Sleeps: 2+Number of bedrooms: Hotel roomsPrice for April 6-8, 2024: $260

New Harmony offers a unique blend of history, charm, and artistic spirit. Founded by two utopian communities in the early 1800s, and the town’s historic core is a National Historic Landmark (and easy to explore on foot). But it’s also an art hub, with art galleries and museums. New Harmony Inn Resort is a great eclipse hotel as it’s very close to Harmonie State Park, perfect for hiking and in the path of totality mid-afternoon. The hotel has a big indoor pool and free bike rentals, plus a complimentary breakfast each day.

Book NowCrystal Moon: Broken Bow, OKbroken bow house - eclipse home rentals

Photo: Booking.com

Sleeps: 5Number of bedrooms: 2Price for April 6-8, 2024: $468

Broken Bow is in the Ouachita Mountains of southeastern Oklahoma, making Crystal Moon one of the best eclipse home rentals for travelers who feel at home in nature. It’s in the path of totality, so you can watch the blackout from the home’s wooded back yard. It’s a fairly high-end home, with a gourmet kitchen and large rooms, plus an outdoor covered hot tub. While the roof over the hot tub will make it hard to watch the eclipse while soaking, all you have to do is hop out around 1:34 PM — the totality is expected to begin over the mountains of Broken Bow around 1:45, so that should leave you enough time ot grab a towel and post up on the lawn. Don’t forget your eclipse glasses.

It’s also only about 90 minutes from Crater of Diamonds State Park, if you feel like going on a diamond-hunting adventure before or after your stay.

Book Now The Empress of Little Rock: Little Rock, AKlittle rock eclipse hotel eclipse home rentals arkansas

This is one of the best eclipse hotels if you’re anywhere near Little Rock, since it’s only about one mile from MacArthur Park. The is the host for Little Rock’s eclipse viewing party, complete with a live DJ and stage performances (plus food and artisan stalls) over the course of the day on April 8.  The Empress of Little Rock is old-school glam, housed in a literal Victorian mansion. It’s richly colored, moody, and equal parts romantic meets historic, with suites named after figures central to Arkansas’ history. It’s also close to some gorgeous Arkansas state parks, if the viewing party isn’t your thing.

Book Now Lakeview on the Lake: North East, PAeclipse hotels erie PA

Photo: Booking.com

Sleeps: 2+Number of bedrooms: Hotel rooms and cabinsPrice for April 6-8, 2024: $440

If you’re looking for an eclipse hotel where you can watch the celestial event over the water, look no further than Lakeview on the Lake. It sits, fittingly, on Lake Erie, with easy access to area adventures and only about 20 minutes from the town of Erie. But despite that closeness, it’s very rural and remote-feeling. You can choose from hotel rooms, or choose a cottage or cabin if you’re focused more on eclipse home rentals with extra space.

With hammocks, Adirondack chairs, a heated pool, and beach access, you’ll have no shortage of areas from which to watch the eclipse. And after the event, you can head just a few minutes away to on of more than two dozen wineries, as North East is the center of the state’s wine country.

These Two Cruise Lines in Norway Will Redo Your Trip if You Miss the Northern Lights

Only two cruise lines sail Norway’s Coastal Route from Bergen to Kirkenes and back: Hurtigruten and Havila Voyages. The two cruise lines, which travel through parts of Norway where you can traditionally see the northern lights during the colder months, also have something else in common: northern lights promises.

The basic concept of the northern lights promise is that Hurtigruten and Havila Voyages will give cruisers who sail during peak aurora season a complimentary repeat cruise if the northern lights fail to appear during their original voyage. On both cruise lines, the deal only applies to travelers who book a full voyage originally, which typically lasts 12 days, and the makeup cruise is only good for a one-way cruise traveling either northbound or southbound for six or seven days.

Both cruise lines historically outlined peak aurora season as the beginning of October to the end of March. Now, Hurtigruten has extended its northern lights promise to include voyages that begin in mid-September.

Of the decision to amend its northern lights promise, Hedda Felin, CEO at Hurtigruten, said in a press release, “We firmly believe that Norway is the best place to experience the [northern lights] and that our coastal cruises offer the best way to explore Norway. We are thrilled to extend our Northern Lights Promise sailing period, allowing more guests to immerse themselves in the magic of the [aurora borealis].”

While Norway’s current aurora season is quickly coming to an end, Hurtigruten’s northern lights promise will apply to sails between September 20, 2024, and March 31, 2025, for both the North Cape Express and Original Coastal Express routes. (Hurtigruten cruisers can also look out for astronomy-focused sails that include special lectures and an expert-led visit to the Northern Lights Planetarium in Tromsø during both the 2024-5 and 2025-6 seasons.)

On Havila Voyages cruises, travelers who book round-trip sails between October 1 and March 31 will still be eligible for the northern lights promise.

If you’re traveling all the way to Norway with a dream of seeing the northern lights, the insurance policies that these cruise lines put forth is worth its weight in gold, or Norwegian krone as it were. But as reassuring as the possibility of a repeat cruise is, the goal is still to see the aurora on your original sail.

If you’re lucky enough to catch a glimpse, you’ll want to be prepared. That means knowing how to successfully photograph the northern lights — not only will you forge an incredible in-person memory, but you’ll also have proof to show off to your friends and family and marvel at privately for years to come.

Here’s What It’s Like Inside the Nile’s Most Luxurious River Cruise

River cruises are soaring in popularity. They are becoming a new luxury tipple for those looking for a more intimate cruising experience on a smaller vessel. UNIWORLD is one of the leading boutique river cruise companies specializing in all-inclusive vacations. From classic routes such as The Danube and The Rhine to jungle adventures on the Peruvian Amazon, the cruise line offers exciting itineraries across the globe, with new offerings added throughout the year. One of their most extravagant trips is the Death on the Nile (without the murder) Splendors of Egypt and the Nile Cruise.

The 12-day journey is aboard one of UNIWORLD’s newest boats, The S.S. Sphinx. Accommodating up to 82 guests with a staff ratio of nearly one to one-and-a-half passengers, the S.S. Sphinx is a far cry from a mega cruise ship.

The route begins and ends in Cairo, exploring the most famous historical and archaeological sites along the way. The cruise includes eight excursions to all of the most famous sites in Egypt, including the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Karnak, and the Temple of Luxor, all accompanied by a small team of Egyptologists.

The cruise includes seven nights on board and four nights in Cairo at the Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza or the Nile Ritz-Carlton.

Onboard the S.S. Sphinx, the generous-in-size staterooms feature French balcony windows, handcrafted Savoir beds, marble bathrooms with Asprey bath amenities, and lovely river views. The ship’s decor incorporates bespoke design elements crafted by local artisans. Expect fine Egyptian cotton, regionally sourced marble, and hand-carved blonde wood furniture. The top deck features a swimming pool, perfect for cooling off under the Egyptian sun. There’s also a massage room for pampering after a day exploring historical sites.

The S.S. Sphinx has two gourmet dining venues. The main restaurant serves signature dishes with local ingredients, complemented by paired wines and beers. There’s also a “Travelling Lite” menu for health-conscious options, and vegetarian and vegan choices can be prepared upon request.

Prices start at $6240 per person. This program is active, so a general level of everyday fitness is required.

Why You Should Absolutely Wear Your Seatbelt When Flying, According to a Pilot and Flight Attendant

It’s easy for frequent flyers to ignore or even scoff at airplane safety demonstrations, sarcastically proffering that if the aircraft was to go down, wearing a seatbelt would not save their lives. Those people are wrong. Wearing a seatbelt is one of the main things you can do to ensure your safety. And much like wearing a seatbelt in a moving car, wearing one throughout a flight is non-negotiable.

Ask Cuong Tran, one of the passengers who was sitting near a gaping hole in the fuselage of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9 on January 5, 2024, after a door panel blew off during take-off. USA Today reports that the violent suction coming from the hole took away his shoes and socks, and hurt his foot. Tran’s seatbelt most likely saved his life.

The unpredictable nature of in-flight incidents, whether they are as serious as a door plug blowing off or as minor as turbulence, means that air travelers should wear their seatbelts at all times when seated, no matter how uncomfortable.

“It is one of the most important things you can do for not only your own safety but the safety of everyone around you,” explains Tyler Herbert, an experienced airline pilot in Canada. “Obviously pilots try to always be aware of any turbulence in the area we are flying, however there is always the chance of finding turbulence that’s unexpected. People could fall and hurt themselves and others if they aren’t secured.”

Nicolas Bessuejouls, who has been working as a flight attendant for the past 16 years, echoes Herbert’s comments. “As I always tell my passengers, wearing a seatbelt is the only thing they need to do to stay safe,” Bessuejouls says. “No matter how strong the turbulence is, if they stay seated and secured they are perfectly safe and prevent hurting themselves or others.” Bessuejouls goes on to say “I always recommend to wear the seatbelt every time [the passengers] are seated, with or without turbulence and even if the seatbelt sign is off.”

But while wearing your seatbelt during a flight is of the utmost importance, you have to wear it properly for it to actually keep you safe. For example, don’t follow the advice of influencers on TikTok who dangerously encourage air travelers to wear their seatbelts around their ankles for more comfort. In case of severe turbulence, wearing your seatbelt around your ankles won’t protect you from falling over your neighbor, hitting the seat in front of you, or prevent you from hitting your head on the cabin ceiling. Instead, follow the recommendations from experts like Christina Ling, the flight attendant instructor behind the TikTok account @flightattinstructor. Ling explains that for maximum protection, passenger should wear their seatbelt tightly on the lower part of their torso (on or above the belly button) to keep their organs safe.

@flightattinstructor 5 things I wouldn’t do as a Flight Att Instructor #5things #5thingsiwouldneverdo #thingsiwishiknew #thingsiwouldneverdo #5thingschallenge #5things #FreestyleFridays #OneDegreeMore #airplane #airplanetiktok #travel #traveltiktok ♬ original sound – flightattinstructor

Any it’s not just passengers who have to wear their seatbelts properly during a flight, pilots and flight attendants must do the same.

“Pilots are always to be wearing their seatbelts any time we are seated,” Herbert says. “Again it’s just an extra layer of protection in the event of turbulence or even something as major as a window shattering. I’m sure you have heard of the incident with British Airways with the captain being partially sucked out the window when one blew out. I believe he was wearing his seatbelt but perhaps not properly. I can’t remember the details exactly. But if something like this were to happen the seatbelt is hopefully going to save us.”

While flight attendants do spend a lot of time on their feet, Bessuejouls explains that they also need to wear their seatbelts at crucial times during a flight. “Everytime we occupy or crew jumpseats for take off and landing, or when informed by the captain in command that a turbulence is approaching. In addition, we always use our judgement and when we feel like weather is getting bad, we always seat and fasten our seatbelts.”

In conclusion, listen to the experts, those are here to insure your safety while in an aircraft, they know better than anyone else.
