Why Don’t UPS Trucks Turn Left?

Featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not!

ups trucks don't turn left

UPS Trucks

In 2004, UPS  adopted a rather strange policy: no left turns.

Since then, the company estimates it has saved tens of millions of dollars by adopting this policy.

After careful studies using tracking software and GPS, they found their trucks wasted a lot of time and fuel waiting on lights to make left-hand turns.

They also discovered that trucks turning left were more likely to be involved in an accident.

Benefits of the Right Turn

10,000 gallons of fuel saved
20,000 fewer tons of carbon dioxide emitted
350,000 more packages delivered

Technically, UPS drivers do make left turns–in countries where drivers use the left lane–and then the right-turn rule is reversed. They will also be seen making a left when it’s exceedingly inefficient to make a series of right turns in low traffic areas.

Turkeys Circle Dead Cat in Bizarre Ritual

Turkeys Circle Dead Cat

When Twitter user @TheReal_JDavis stepped outside, he saw something bizarre:

Over a dozen turkeys circling a dead cat in what seemed like an endless loop.

“This is the craziest thing I’ve ever seen.”

Biologists can’t say why they were doing this for sure, but they have a few theories.

Alan Krakauer of the University of California thinks they may be exhibiting “predator inspection.” A trait of prey animals approaching predators in a bluff style self-defense mechanism. What he couldn’t explain was why they would do this to a practically harmless house cat that was deceased.

Boston Magazine tried to get to the bottom of the mysterious circle and called “Massachusetts’ foremost turkey expert” David Scarpitti for comment.

Turkeys are naturally fearful of cats, which can be a threat to younger, smaller birds. So it’s likely that, when they came across a dead one in the road, they were very curious to see what was going on, and whether it was alive.

He goes on to sat that the the birds may have “just gotten stuck in a loop after one circled the cat to get a better look, and the rest fell in line in a silly game of follow-the-leader.”

Lost Helicopter Pilot Asks Truck Driver For Directions

Lost Pilot Asks Directions

A convoy of truckers in Kazakhstan was startled to see a military helicopter blocking their path on an icy two-lane road. After moments of nervous waiting, the lost pilot climbed out of the craft and ran towards one of the drivers.

The pilot shook the driver’s hand and then asked him for directions.

Apparently, the pilot was lost and needed directions to the nearest town. After a short conversation, the pilot returned to the Mi-8 helicopter and flew away.

Kazakhstan officials claim this was part of a training exercise which included the use of “human surveys.” According to them, the helicopter is now safely back on its landing pad at a nearby military base.

Chaplin Grave Robbery

Three months after Charlie Chaplin died in 1977, police were startled to find his grave had been disturbed. Charlie Chaplin’s body was missing.

After receiving an eery phone call from the graverobbers, Chaplin’s wife, Oona, laughed at their demand of $750,000.

She said they could keep him for that much. Police, however, couldn’t let it go. They tapped over 200 phones in the area and eventually caught the crooks.

A pair of auto mechanics had stolen the body and lead police to Chaplin’s buried body in a corn field.

Snail Shell Repair

After a woman stepped on a roaming garden snail in the streets of Tel Aviv, Israel, she felt terrible.

The poor creature’s shell had cracked, and without it—would not survive.

Thinking quickly, she took it to Ha Clinic where Dr. Anat Milner got to work carefully gluing the shell back together.

The snail, dubbed Chevy, waited calmly and patiently as the vet worked.

Recovery

After epoxying the shell together, Chevy was placed in a small aquarium for recovery.

They expect the recovery to take a couple weeks, as doctors are sure to keep him hydrated and provided with ample calcium to help rebuild his shell.

According to the clinic’s Facebook page, the wet season can make the snails more active. So if it is raining near you, make sure to watch out for snails!
