John Chilton is a retired hydrologist who specialized in rural water supplies. He is a former Executive Manager of the International Association of Hydrogeologists.

Chilton started his career invesitgating regional water resource in Libya, Yemen, Botswana, and Korea for the British Geological Survey. In the 1980s, he led a project in Malawi supporting the government in its efforts to meet the country’s water supply needs. He continued to travel widely for BGS, while investigating the impact of agriculture on groundwater and developing groundwater quality monitoring programs in the UK. He went on to work with several UN agencies and the EU Working Group providing guidance on implementation of the Water Framework Directive.
