Phil is an aspiring writer of detective stories, who barely makes ends meet. He shares an apartment with a friend and he can see his girlfriend in video chats only, because he can't afford an intercity bus ticket. It's not all though. Phil is also a gambling addict in recovery and he has a few female friends who are… ghosts. Obviously getting involved in some mysterious adventure is only a matter of time for the guy with such a track record, and this adventure starts right when Phil finds a part-time job as a courier.

Paranormal cozy mystery is a genre I have never read before, so I was very curious. With the first lines I got captivated by Douglas J. McLeod's succinct prose that matched the genre pretty well. However, I think that the author used Phil's potential as the MC of a mystery story to less than 20% and for me the mystery component was too linear and lacked twists and tension. The storyline about Phil's relationship with his girlfriend also felt somewhat undeveloped.

Still it was an interesting and enjoyable read. Easy and understandable language combined with not too tangled plot makes this story a good choice for English learners who would like to expand their vocabulary through reading. The book contains a few typos but those are not crucial.

One more interesting feature of this story is its exceptionally diverse dialog tags. Despite Stephen King's advice on using 'said' and not complicating things, Douglas J. McLeod seemed to challenge himself by minimizing the use of this verb. I spotted it only twice in the entire book, while the amount of alternatives the author managed to come up with was truly surprising.

If you're looking for a quick and easy read in the mystery genre, "Signed, Stolen, Delivered" may be a good choice. However, if you're a fan of twisted multilayered plots full of danger and tension, this book won't give you that. ...more

They feel a connection the first moment they meet, however, the book nearly 600 pages long proves to be not enough for them to finally establish a relationship. So, you’ll have to read part 2 “With Wine Comes War” to find out if they succeed.

I was intrigued by the title of this book and at first it was justified. Alex grew up with an alcoholic mother and her abusive ex-husband had a drinking problem too. Both these factors affected Alex’s self-esteem and her mental state in a negative way and contributed to the establishment of her complicated relationship with alcohol. Alex often uses wine to muffle her pain and mute her inner demons, yet her attachment to alcohol is still above the line where anyone should be worried. At some point, however, alcohol moves to the background and doesn’t seem to play any significant role in the story, so, for me, the question “Who gets the wisdom and what kind of wisdom it is?” remained unanswered.

The story has quite an interesting plot line about the dirty business in the sphere of real estate with the involvement of politicians that is connected both with Alex’s and Roman’s jobs. I thought the main characters’ collaboration on the matter would become one of the main factors in their rapprochement, however the author moved the story in a bit different direction. In my opinion, that storyline deserved much more attention.

Generally, the development of Alex’s and Roman’s relationship is quite interesting to watch but there are a few things that somewhat worsen the experience. The story uses dual-POV, which on the one hand allows one to see the situation from both ends, while on the other hand it creates redundancy and significantly slows down the pace, since many scenes are described at least twice. The details are a bit problematic part of this story, since sometimes there are too many of them, while where they would be welcome, the author chooses to leave us in the dark.

The relationship between Alex and Roman is shown in a one-sided way, focusing mainly on their physical attraction. The story has a lot of flirting and a few spicy scenes that were generally enjoyable to read, but all the characters’ conversations apart from their flirting and related games lacked depth. Although the characters repeatedly claim to have some special emotional connection, there's barely anything explaining what it is based on.

Overall, “With Wine Comes Wisdom” is a good story that the lovers of slow burn romances and real estate themes might like. However, you’ll need to be patient because the real drama and tension of this story start somewhere ⅔ of the way and when the story reaches its climax, it ends abruptly, leaving the reader on a cliffhanger with more questions than answers. ...more
