Newspapers for Inspiration

Why do I still read newspapers?
Because I find inspiration for fiction!

Turning the pages of a newspaper exposes me to the news OUTSIDE my corner of the world. It's a great way to discover oddball tidbits that inform my fiction.

Onions & Characters...

Fictional characters should have one thing in common with onions — multiple layers!

Like real people, characters require both coherence and surprises. This comes from the layers of thoughts, traits, and experiences that inform the character's actions.

Check out this new Monster Meditation and share your favorite character traits.

LISTEN!

Sound can evoke all sorts of emotions and create atmosphere in fiction. Orson Welles certainly used it in his films and it's great for all sorts of storytelling.

I'm exploring sound in a Monster Meditation on Candy's Monsters blog today:

Does your character eat Miso Soup or Matzo Ball Soup? Pizza or Pasta?

Lots of choices and ways to illuminate characters without using ordinary descriptive text.
