Season 2, Episode 09: The 3 Forces That Shape Character [Podcast]
Welcome to Season 2, Episode 9 of the This Is Your Life podcast. In this ninth episode, Michele Cushatt and I discuss the importance of character and the forces that shape it.
Charisma may be useful in attracting a following, but it is largely useless when it comes to achieving a long-term, positive impact on the people and organizations we lead. For this, we need character. Effective leadership is an inside-out job.

Will You Reach Your Goals in 2015? My New Free Video Series Shows You How
We are all made to accomplish certain things unique to us. Our dreams and ambitions tell us all the time what those things are, but sometimes we tune them out, right?
Maybe other voices—all the pressing, demanding, urgent things in our lives—take precedence. Maybe we’re afraid about what our dream might cost us. Or maybe we feel like our ambitions have led us astray in the past.
Those last two were big for me.

One Sure-Fire Trick for Overcoming the Winter Blues
Every year we hear news about people who suffer from holiday or seasonal blues. More than just hearing about them, a large number actually experience them. I certainly have.
For some, it’s about relational rifts and resentments. For others, including me, it’s about diminishing daylight and getting less exercise—at least that has been the case for me in the past. Since discovering this about myself, I’ve been intentional about addressing it.
But there’s another factor we could be missing.

I Thank, Therefore I Am
For some, the word eucharist can be off-putting. It suggests ritual, sacraments, and liturgy. It can seem like the very opposite of a personal relationship with God.
But eucharist is word that all of us can embrace. It comes from the Greek, eucharisteó, which means “to give thanks.” This behavior should not only be central to the life of every Christian, but it’s also what distinguishes humans from all other created beings.

The Gratitude Advantage: Four Ways Giving Thanks Improves Your Life
There are a lot of myths around the first American Thanksgiving in 1621, but one thing is for sure. The Pilgrims were lucky to be alive, and they knew it.
“Eleven months earlier the Pilgrims had arrived at the tip of Cape Cod, fearful and uninformed,” says Nathaniel Philbrick in his history Mayflower. “By all rights, none of the Pilgrims should have emerged from the first winter alive.”
But they did. Thanks to God, their faith, and help from many Native Americans, they did more than survive. They began to flourish. And it’s a virtuous circle.

What the Success of Slack Can Teach Us about Creating Winning Products
I love watching people succeed, especially if I can learn something I can apply in my own life and share with you. That’s why I’m excited about what I learned from watching Slack’s success this year.
Slack is a communications tool that enables natural and effective team collaboration. The company, started by Stewart Butterfield, the cofounder of Flickr, has been making news since going public earlier this year and is already worth more than a billion dollars.
