43 things I loved on the internet in May

Even though we have clearly established my non-expertise, I still want to share fantastic advice and resources with fellow writers and dreamers. That’s why I’ve added regular guest posts, interviews, and now, once a month, a collection of links to the best stories, articles, and resources I can find online. In case you missed them, here are 43 things I loved in May (and a little bit of April):

I am not an expert

Lecture hall, lessons learned, blogging, expertise, writingI have just realized that you probably don’t want to hear what I have to say.

You have no reason to come to me for advice. Yet I continue to spew it, two or three times a week, tips and steps to help you get through life. I have convinced 500 followers and myself that I matter, that I have any more of an idea how to do anything than you do.

I don’t.

I didn’t start this blog because I was brimming with wisdom and expertise that needed to be shared. I needed an outlet for expressing and exploring...

This Week in Words | Accessories

Accessories, Shoes, High heels, Blogging, Freelance writingIt’s only Friday (for those of you who know this column is supposed to run on Saturdays), but I’m trying to make some changes to accommodate my new work schedule and new priorities, and the first one is to remove required weekend work. Since my younger sister, due in under five weeks, won’t know her baby’s sex until it’s born, that was also a common topic of conversation.

“I can’t even buy clothes at a rummage sale, because everything is so gender-specific,” she said as we passed by an unusually large number of rummage sales last Saturday in my home town.

She’s convinced wit...

My summer writing retreat

20120510-210627.jpg

I don’t know if I’ll ever attend a real writing retreat — secluded in the woods somewhere with no internet but in some common building, flipping the bill of hundreds of dollars — but staying at my mom’s house in central Wisconsin for a summer comes close enough for me. I didn’t have to pass an application process or pay a tremendous fee, and no one is requiring me to complete a book by the end. But, we are pretty secluded out here in the country, the closest city (i.e. someplace with a Walgre...
