He was about fourteen and was stuck in limbo with other Polish wartime refugees in Uzbekhistan with his mother and some of his siblings when his mum fell sick. They finally received the call to be transported to what was then Persia to come under the care of the British Government and his mother was too sick to travel so they were forced to leave her behind. They never found out what happened to her. I included this in my novel A Winter's Day in 1939 and as in real life this mystery remained without a resolution. Unfortunately I don't think this tragic mystery will ever be solved. (less)

“We are our memories," Dodge said. "That's all we are. That's what makes us the person we are. The sum of all our memories from the day we were born. If you took a person and replaced his set of memories with another set, he'd be a different person. He'd think, act, and feel things differently.”

“Because subjects like literature and art history have no obvious material pay-off, they tend to attract those who look askance at capitalist notions of utility. The idea of doing something purely for the delight of it has always rattled the grey-bearded guardians of the state. Sheer pointlessness has always been a deeply subversive affair.”
