Walt Disney Family Museum April Events

SPRING INTO STYLE WITH CINDERELLA THIS APRIL AT THE WALT DISNEY FAMILY MUSEUM
The Walt Disney Family Museum is exploring the quality, style, and nature of the art and design of Disney films by celebrating the timeless feature-length animated film Cinderella—the classic rags-to-riches story about a beautiful girl who finds her happily-ever-after with Prince Charming through a fairy godmother, a little magic, and a glass slipper. After its release on February 15, 1950, Cinderella quickly became the highest grossing film of the year and the profits helped the Disney Studios produce more successful feature-length films throughout the decade including Peter Pan and Alice and Wonderland.             Concept art for Cinderella by Mary Blair.    Photo courtesy The Walt Disney Company, ©Disney.FILM SCREENINGSCinderella (1950)Screens daily at 1 and 4 p.m. (except Tuesdays and April 14, 15, and 28)Admission to the film is $7 general; $5 under 17; or free with paid Museum admission.SPECIAL PROGRAMSCinderella Style: The Evolution of Disney AnimationSunday, April 15 at 3 p.m.$12 general; $9 under 17Oscar®-winning Pixar director and Disney expert Ralph Eggleston discusses the evolving design sophistication of Disney animation—specifically the post-war streamlining and innovations brought to the forefront with the production of Cinderella. DISNEY ARCHIVE MAQUETTES

Those fortunate enough to visit the Disney Archives on the lot of the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank have seen this remarkable collection of maquettes. A maquette is a small scale model that is used by animators to make sure that a character's proportions most closely match those of the 2d drawings. They have the ability to see the character from a variety of angles and to remain consistent to the character design.

Storybook Land Canal Boat Diaries

It is the Fall of 1955 and Disneyland had just opened to great fanfare. You have decided it is time to check out what all the fuss is about so you pack your family into the station wagon and head off to Anaheim for your very first visit.

Of course, the heart of Disneyland is Fantasyland, which is filled with family favorites such as Peter Pan's Flight, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, and Snow White's Adventures. As you go north in Fantasyland you come across an attraction where the Cast Members drafted a hand written sign that said, "This ride is not complete." They were trying really hard to lower the public's expectations. But why?

THE AMERICAN ADVENTURE LOBBY

As frequent readers of Samland have noticed, I tend to use quotes frequently. I am of the belief that somebody probably already said it right and better then I ever could. Plus, the research process is a lot of fun. The next time you get to The American Adventure at Epcot, pause for a moment and absorb some great wisdom selected by the Imagineers. Each statement enhances and embellishes the main themes from the show. Some good stuff, eh?

THE FRONT OF THE DISNEYLAND MONORAIL

If you have never ridden in the front cab of the Disneyland Monorail, I highly recommend it. Sadly, you cannot do this at Walt Disney World anymore. The pilots are always friendly and the view is the best. All you have to do is to ask very, very nicely and if nobody else has asked you have your shot. Just aim for the door to the cab.
