Akimbo Week of 7/20 (International Women's Health Coalition)

dorothy150x150 Here's what we've been checking out online this week:

In the American Prospect, Michelle Goldberg writes about the controversial, population-control endorsing past of John Holdren, who is Assistant to President Barack Obama for Science and Technology, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and Co-Chair of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

On the Human Rights blog in the World Affairs blog network, Kimberly Curtis blogged about Advancing

Time Out Names The Bi Apple a "Best New York City Porno"

Time Out New York has a list up of 10 Best New York City Porn Films - and The Bi Apple is on it. They've got this to say about my movie.

Those who "like to watch" will find a kindred spirit in Simone (Simone Valentino, see above), the sexual researcher sent to conduct fieldwork on bisexuality in the Big Apple. Her subject: "The Fuckhouse," an apartment where self-described sluts love freely. Though Simone's advised to "keep her pants on and hands visible," she quickly goes native. We're privy to

Amsterdam and Berlin 2009 in Pictures and Video

Jennifer Lyon Bell and I are very happy about herring and frites

Jennifer Lyon Bell, my lovely hostess, and I - looking a little crazy with excitement over snacks: herring and frites.

As I was embarking on my trip to Europe, I noted that I have been fortunate to create four Flickr sets for visits to Amsterdam and Berlin over the past two years. New York, Amsterdam, and Berlin are truly the axis of awesome as far as I'm concerned. I've met such totally amazing people in those two European cities, which is why I just couldn't stay away. And so: vacation.

I've g

Giant window display of the rabbit vibrator Yep, you read properly! I'm on vacation in Amsterdam and Berlin. And I'm not blogging at all. Well, except for this post, which is to tell you I'm not blogging.

Facebook

Flickr - my account is marked "unsafe" (I can't imagine why, goodness!), so you have to be logged in to Flickr to see it (though otherwise you don't need special permission, just a Flickr username)

I'm hanging out w

Book Review: Zak Smith's We Did Porn

[image error] We Did Porn: Memoir and Drawings by Zak Smith

My review: rating: 4 of 5 stars

A few disclaimers before I write about this book: Zak Smith is a friend. He writes about me (as Auspicia Clay) in this book. In general, he writes about my/our friends in this book and some of the events he writes about were ones I was present for or have heard stories about through other channels.

I took this pic of Zak and Mandy in July of 2007, when I was in Los Angeles on my book tour for Naked on the Internet: Hoo

Lady's Hands, Lion's Heart- A Midwife's Saga Lady's Hands, Lion's Heart- A Midwife's Saga by Carol Leonard

rating: 5 of 5 stars
I have never been so viscerally affected by a book as I was by this one. Seriously, never. I squirmed, I clutched at my heart, I cried.

Let me explain: in my admittedly limited and very finite universe, vaginas are for fun and especially for putting things into, they are not for pushing out babies.

This book is all about pushing out babies and the intense physical, emotional, and family stuff that comes along with

Why I Haven't Been Blogging Here Lately

I have been busy. Like, this was my day on Thursday:

Fetched by a car service at 6 am and delivered to the shiny new studios of WNYC, where I was to be on The Takeaway, discussing Governor Sanford, sex, and morality in America. Did a 1 minute thing at the top of the hour (7 am) and then a 10 minute thing at 7.45 am along with Debby Herbenick, a researcher and professor from Indiana State University. Here's what the Public Radio International blog recap of the segment:

(Video) Michelle Goldberg on the Global Battle Over Reproductive Health

In her new book The Means of Reproduction: Sex, Power, and the Future of the World, author Michelle Goldberg exposes the global battle over women’s reproductive rights that pit reformers against an international alliance of fundamentalists, with profound consequences for both individual lives and worldwide development.

Last night IWHC hosted an event with Michelle so our friends and staff could learn more about her approach to writing the book. We were especially interested to hear what she had
