Just passed my 1000 posts mark. Was going to write some navel-gazing thing about blogging and the internets for the occasion, reblogged post about stop and frisk / racial profiling / injustice instead.

Actually, yeah, that’s pretty much all I need to say about my evolving relationship to the internet and what its for.

The NYPD has declared a portion of Flatbush a “Frozen Zone”, meaning media are not allowed in and people can be subjected to arrest for not following police orders. It basically means the area is under temporary martial law. The last times the NYPD declared a Frozen Zone was on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and during the beginning of OWS.

Please call 311 to demand that everyone in connection to tonight’s Kimani vigil/march be released from the 71st precinct in Brooklyn. There’s one Malcolm X Grassroots Movement member arrested & two Justice Committee (JC) members arrested. A ton of community members who were at the vigil/march were also arrested. If you have friends/family in NYC please tell them to call 311. If you live in NYC please call 311. Let’s get them free! Please share!

NYPD decided not to release community members and Cop Watchers arrested at the vigil for Kimani “Kiki” Gray. Please call 7182502001 to demand NO charges be brought against all arrested

Update: they’re redirecting all calls to 718 250 2340. A person from the DA’s office will ask about the specific nature of your complaint and ask for your name, phone number, and address, all of which are optional to provide (if you live in Brooklyn I would strongly encourage you to mention that, though I wouldn’t give them your exact address). They do not know where they will send the list of complaints and told me to call back later in the day to find out. I am going to call again at 2 PM and will post an update then.

There are also gender dimensions to stop and frisk that are very real but documented by groups that are much smaller and less funded than NYCLU. See Transgressive Policing: Police Abuse of LGBTQ Communities of Color in Jackson Heights, by Make the Road NY, October 2012 (link is to 33 page PDF).

Trans women of color and people of color who are gender non-conforming are at high risk for stop and frisk, and often also get any condoms they are carrying confiscated and destroyed.

While people of color make up about 30 percent of the United States’ population, they account for 60 percent of those imprisoned.

Once convicted, black offenders receive longer sentences compared to white offenders. The U.S. Sentencing Commission stated that in the federal system black offenders receive sentences that are 10 percent longer than white offenders for the same crimes.
Marijuana Prohibition Turns 75, Blacks Three Times More Likely to be Arrested Than Whites
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, one in three black men can expect to go to prison in their lifetime.
A number of states have bans on people with certain convictions working in domestic health-service industries such as nursing, child care, and home health care—areas in which many poor women and women of color are disproportionately concentrated.
African Americans were twice as likely to be arrested and almost four times as likely to experience the use of force during encounters with the police.
The prison population grew by 700 percent from 1970 to 2005, a rate that is outpacing crime and population rates. The incarceration rates disproportionately impact men of color: 1 in every 15 African American men and 1 in every 36 Hispanic men are incarcerated in comparison to 1 in every 106 white men.

Pissed off about how condoms are used as evidence of prostitution in New York?

I mean, this is is just unconscionable and stupid.

I’m going to call my friends who work at the NYCDHMH (NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene) and ask them if they co-signed this shit

Some history on DOH involvement - in 2010 thy collaborated with the PROS Network to do a study on condoms as evidence in NY, but then they refused to release the study. At PROS, our coalition actually made the decision to do the study over so we could have usable data (more about what happened with the report in this NY Times piece). And last year we were informed that the NY Dept of Health and Mental Hygiene OPPOSES the bill to ban the use of condoms as evidence. Yes, you read that right - the DOH opposes a bill that would protect the health of populations that are vulnerable to HIV infection. The only plausible reason for this is that they feel they cannot go against NYPD Chief Ray Kelly. Despicable.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) in Washington, DC is distributing cards that say that CONDOMS CANNOT BE USED AS EVIDENCE and they are educating police and prosecutors about this. This is what the front of the card looks like! Can’t believe we’re saying this, but - go MPD! NYPD needs to get in line.

On the back, the card gives this info:

“Pros(e) connects the value of storytelling, an idea driving RedUP, to the concrete benefits that sex workers can gain from having a venue to tell their stories. This anthology, simply by virtue of existing, is part of a larger project to counteract the stereotypes and stigma that works to threaten those in the sex industries.”
