A to Z Song Challenge: S is for Summer.....

I'm cheating.  "S" was way too hard for me.  I actually felt like pulling my hair out.  There were so many songs, so many ways to go for this one.  Send For Me by Atlantic Star, Strawberry Letter 23 by The Brothers Johnson (my fav Spring song), Soft by Boney James (beautiful song), Say It by Ne-Yo (that song is a whole post for another day because, as a romance writer, it has inspiration all over it), Searching by Roy Ayers (another classic), September by Earth, Wind, and Fire (fun song), Seven Whole Days by Toni Braxton (she's awesome), Since I Seen't You  by Anthony Hamilton (he's awesome), Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana (perfect head banging song), Spaceships on Bankhead by Young Jeezy (Geeked Up), I could go on and on.

Actually, there is one song that deserves a separate mention because of it's significance.  Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin.  When I first started going with my hubby, he serenaded me with this song on his guitar.  I knew then I had something special with him.  And that song will always remind me of him.

But it didn't win.  In fact, in the end, I just couldn't narrow it down.  So....

is for Summer...

Summer Madness by Kool and the Gang.

Summertime by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince
And... Summertime by Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong from the Porgy and Bess Soundtrack  And there you have it...  Hope you enjoy!

A to Z Song Challenge: R is for Roxanne

Growing up, I remember music always being a part of my life.  Either the stereo was turned on or my mother was singing.  So I was exposed to a variety of different artists and songs.  Unfortunately, some of those songs were way above my head in subject matter.

I was the queen of song misinterpretation.  I was the one who thought Juicy Fruit by Mtume was really about a piece of gum.  It wasn't until my mother firmly corrected me when I was singing it at the top of my lungs in the back seat of the car.  Then there was the song Joystick by The Dazz Band.  One guess what that song was about, but I just knew they were talking about my Atari video game system.  And there was a song by the Whispers called Olivia (Lost and Turned Out).  It was really about a young girl, forced into prostitution by a pimp.  I thought it was about Little Red Riding Hood because the chorus said, "Olivia got distracted on her way to Grandmother's house."

So, my "R" song was another one that I got completely wrong.  And I'll leave it up to you to guess why...

A to Z Song Challenge: Q is for Queen of My Heart

This is, by far, the easiest letter EVER.  And that's because there were only a few "Q" songs out there that I love.  But none of them as much as this one...

is for Queen of My Heart by DeBarge

DeBarge is one of my favorite groups of all times.  Classics like I Like it, A Dream, Love Me in a Special Way, Stay with Me, Time will Reveal, Rhythm of the Night are what set them apart from some of their counterparts.  This particular song wasn't even a single on their album, but I love it all the same.

A to Z Song Challenge: P is for Pavane AND Papillon

In my former life, I was a flautist.  Private lessons, tune-ups, competitions, Symphony Band, Jazz Band, Marching Bad, and this one day...at band camp. LOL  Anyway, I love classical music.

And I was torn on "P" as with all the letters.  I could've picked Papa Don't Preach by Madonna (who doesn't like that intro), Paul Revere by the Beastie Boys (I mean, that beat alone...), Playing Your Game by Barry White (talk about sexy), Planet Rock (because I used to be on the side of the cardboard egging on the break dancers), Promise Me by Luther Vandross (Love him), Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix (no explanation needed), or Please Don't Go by Boyz II Men (the song I heard in my head when I met my hubby for the first time as a senior in high school).

In the end, though, I chose to go with my love of classical music.

Let me know what you think...

A to Z Song Challenge: O is for Overjoyed

Stevie Wonder.  There are so many songs I could've included on this countdown that were either done by Stevie Wonder or influenced by him.  Just to name a few of his jams... Master Blaster, As, Rocket Love, That Girl, Superstitious, All I Do... I could go on and on.

But this song is the one that sticks out to me.  The music is lovely and the words are... awesome.

And though the odds say improbable
What do they know
For in romance
All true love needs a chance
And maybe with a chance you will find
You too like I
Overjoyed, over loved, over you...

A to Z Song Challenge: N is for Nothing Else

It was hard.  All the way up until just now, I was going back and forth on which song to pick.  It was between this one and No Rhyme No Reason by George Duke.  And really, picking this song does mean I like it better.  They both are favs of mine.  In the end, I went with the artist that was better looking. LOL  (I know...how superficial of me)

So since I LOVE me some JT (he's a definite hottie)...

is for Nothing Else by Justin Timberlake

And just for good measure...  BOOM!

A to Z Song Challenge: M is for My Testimony

So glad I made it,
I made it through
In spite of the storm and rain, heartache and pain
Still, I'm declaring
That I made it through
See, I didn't lose
Experience lost at a major cost
But I never lost faith in You
So if you see me cry,
It's just a sign that I'm
I'm still alive
I got some scars, but I'm still alive
In spite of calamity
He still has a plan for me
And it's working for my good
And it's building my testimony

When my mother died, my hubby made a movie of her life in pictures.  This song was playing in the background.  Now, when I hear this song, I always think of her.  I can't listen to it without tearing up.  Not just because of her, but the words are so profound.  We all have scars, things that happen to us, but we make it through.  Everyone has a story.  Everyone has a testimony.

is for My Testimony by Marvin Sapp

Although there were many songs for "M" that are on my list, this one has touched me the most.  Hope you enjoy!

A to Z Song Challenge: L is for Lady in my Life

Michael Jackson.  I think I was 10-years-old when I decided that my favorite aunt would marry Michael Jackson.  Yes, I was one who had the perfect poster of him in the bright yellow vest plastered on my wall.  I was completely and utterly in love with him.  In fact, when he sang "Say Say Say" with Paul McCartney I just knew he was talking about me.  You know that line, "And I love you endlessly"?  I thought he said, "And I love you AND Leslie!"  LOL

It is only fitting that he is somewhere on this list.  Although I could find a song by him that love in every letter, I chose this one.  It is ONE of my favorites of all time, by any artist.  It's a bonus that it's MJ.

So....

A to Z Song Challenge: K is for Kiss of Life

There must have been an angel by my side
Something Heavenly led me to you
Look at the sky, it’s the color of love
There must have been an angel by my side
Something Heavenly came down from above
He led me to you

This is a love song that truly inspires me.  It makes me smile just to hear it.  The music and the words are what we all hope for when we think of falling in love with that special person.  We all look for that one person who gives us the kiss of life.

A to Z Song Challenge: J is for Just Fine

I was freshman in college when Mary J. Blige entered the scene with her “What’s the 411?” album.  I was an instant fan.  Her songs seemed to bring out many emotions.  In fact, many of her tunes could be on this countdown, but I chose one of the more upbeat ones.    “I won’t change my life, my life is just fine.”  It felt good, as a fan, to hear her belt out those lyrics.
