#WritersWisdom - The End.

Picture Writer's Wisdom - The End. Well, we've reached the end of the 101 Rules for Mastering Your Craft, and I hope they've been of  value to you. If you've missed any of the rules, all 101 of them can be found in the blog archives under Writer's Wisdom. Or better yet, consider purchasing Mr. Goldsberry's book, which goes into much greater detail about each of the 101 rules. It's a wonderful reference tool that you'll turn to again and again! :)

#WritersWisdom -Rule 101- Embrace the Wisdom of Opposing Views

Picture Writer’s Wisdom -Rule #101- Embrace the Wisdom of Opposing Views. “It has been said that a real sign of intelligence is to be able to hold two or more contrasting ideas in your head at once. Things like ’the beginning is the most important part,’ but ‘the punch line is at the end.’ ‘Trust your own voice’ but ‘imitate others.’ ‘Think of writing as a hobby,’ but ‘be professional.’ In the end all that matters is your passion and the journey it takes you on. What seems important to you one day will be folly the next. But that’s life. And that’s writing.”

#WritersWisdom -Rule 100- Aspire to Reach a Universal Audience

Picture Writer’s Wisdom -Rule #100- Aspire to Reach a Universal Audience. “Shakespeare was smart. He knew to make a living as a writer he had to appeal to everyone from paupers to aristocrats. Make for yourself such an audience. Write beyond just you and your friends. Challenge yourself. Aim higher. Aim lower. Target a more universal audience. “

#WritersWisdom -Rule 99- Submit a Professional Manuscript

Picture Writer’s Wisdom -Rule #99- Submit a Professional Manuscript. “Your manuscript should invite the reader in and constantly reward him for his time. Do this with white space, short paragraphs, and sections of properly punctuated dialogue.  Proofread several times for mistakes, especially for spelling. We call it ‘spelling’ because you do cast a magical spell with words, so make sure they’re correct.”

#WritersWisdom -Rule 98- Study the Board

Picture Writer’s Wisdom -Rule #98- Study the Board. “Study the game, ascertain your goal, make a plan, and see it through with patience and persistence, one move at a time. Learn from rejection, and try again. And again. It takes inestimable quantities of time, study, and patience. But the formula works.”

#WritersWisdom -Rule 97- Know How to Sell It

Picture Writer’s Wisdom -Rule #97- Know How to Sell It. “What’s the secret to getting an agent or publisher? Write a good book. It takes more than this, however. You must sell the good book you've written, and this means mastering the ‘ten-second pitch’. You've got ten seconds to impress editors, and ultimately readers. So in twenty-five words or less, write down at least the general premise for your story.  Fine tune it. Books are often sold on this ten-second pitch alone. Make it shine.”

#WritersWisdom -Rule 96- Ultimately, Content Matters More Than Craft

Picture Writer’s Wisdom -Rule #96- Ultimately, Content Matters More Than Craft. “Do pay the utmost attention to your craft. Never let anyone accuse you of shoddy workmanship. But, above all, find a good story to tell.”

#WritersWisdom -Rule 95- If You Can be Misread, You Will Be

Picture Writer’s Wisdom -Rule #95- If You Can be Misread, You Will Be. “Give your readers an opportunity to see or hear something you never intended and they’ll jump at it, often in embarrassing ways.  Control the intent of your content.  Allowing for ambiguity will usually have readers focusing on the least favorable of options, when you want only the best.”

#WritersWisdom -Rule 94- Trust the Muse of Revision

Picture Writer’s Wisdom -Rule #94- Trust the Muse of Revision. “The procedure for fine art leads inexorably to editing, and all great writers have learned to be their own first, last, and most heartless editors. When you sit down to create, forget about the rules. Just write the way you would tell the story to a friend. Once that is done, apply the rules within the glories of revision. Write before you read. Then rewrite after you read. Repeat.”
