William Akin was a dirty faced little boy, bare-chested and thin, with a ragged bath towel safety-pinned around his neck, running up and down the block. He passed by his neighbor, a girl about his age, sitting in the grass and brushing her doll’s red hair. She put it aside and walked up to the gate

-Hey, why do you have that old towel around your neck?

-It’s not a towel, it’s my cape. I’m a superhero.

-Yeah?

-Sure am. I fight crime, over there in the city.

-Your mom won’t even let you cross the street. She laughed and returned to the serious task of grooming her child.

-Mom doesn't care…long as I fly. He stared at his feet, bound to the earth and shuffling, trying not to cry because he was a superhero, though he was certain then he know how krypt

Howard Zinn
“Civil disobedience is not our problem. Our problem is civil obedience. Our problem is that people all over the world have obeyed the dictates of leaders…and millions have been killed because of this obedience…Our problem is that people are obedient allover the world in the face of poverty and starvation and stupidity, and war, and cruelty. Our problem is that people are obedient while the jails are full of petty thieves… (and) the grand thieves are running the country. That’s our problem.”
Howard Zinn

Neil Gaiman
“I believe that mankind's destiny lies in the stars. I believe that candy really did taste better when I was a kid, that it's aerodynamically impossible for a bumble bee to fly, that light is a wave and a particle, that there's a cat in a box somewhere who's alive and dead at the same time (although if they don't ever open the box to feed it it'll eventually just be two different kinds of dead), and that there are stars in the universe billions of years older than the universe itself.”
Neil Gaiman

Ernest Hemingway
“There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”
Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway
“All good books are alike in that they are truer than if they had really happened and after you are finished reading one you will feel that all that happened to you and afterwards it all belongs to you: the good and the bad, the ecstasy, the remorse and sorrow, the people and the places and how the weather was. If you can get so that you can give that to people, then you are a writer.”
Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway
“The first draft of anything is shit.”

William Akin hehehe. I forgot about that one.

c.vance c.vance really? of all that was said in that interview, you took away the lucid stuff? i want to know about the comment, "This is a guy who went to Iceland to get a wife..." did he BUY a wife? is it his inherently creepy beard that the nordic womens love? i tend to believe the person informs the process &/or work more than the process informs the work.

William Akin I can certainly see and I thought that before. I read like a third of it then got side tracked, as I usually do.

c.vance c.vance just now with the Calvino?
i didn't force you to read it earlier?
it's one of my bibles...

I accepted the friend request solely on it being an imprint of Dzanc Books.

William Akin Now that is funny. They must be making rounds, hitting FOF lists.

I know nothing about them. Do they suck? They friend requested me last night and I accepted figuring I would see what they were offering.

c.vance c.vance What was it Black Lawrence Press put out that so impressed both you and Ludwig?

c.vance c.vance A new Jonathan Treadway has appeared on Goodreads; a gay author. As the system automatically lumped him and our beloved southerner together, I had to edit it a bit... you are still the fan of the gay one. Not judging, just letting you know so you can change it if you'd like.

c.vance c.vance hello sir---
get some books added to this thing!
i'm housesitting for another couple this week but i have some nitpicky touch-up recommendations on that story you sent. i think it is a damned good one.
