Honestly Assessing Our Decision to Public School Our KidsI appreciated this interview between Tim and his son. On that note, someday I’m going to have to revisit (in writing) why we chose to remove our kids from the public system before we left Canada, and why we continue to homeschool today.
Between Two Kingdoms: Every Christian’s DilemmaMarty Duren:
Since the ascension of Christ, Christians have sought for the right balance between God and government, between Kingdom and kingdoms, betwee...

How I’m spending my Fourth of July
[image error]
It’s the Fourth of July, which means everyone within a 50-mile radius of my apartment complex is taking the day off to enjoy some grilling, possibly some swimming, and most definitely setting off explosives in their driveways, backyards, and/or balconies.
(You know I’m right.)
I will be doing some of these things. I won’t be setting off explosives, oh no. There’s a bylaw in our town about such things. I will almost certainly be spending some time standing next to a grill. But there are a cou...

When Failure Saves and Success DestroysTim Challies:
3 Truths to Tell Your Soul Before You Go to Sleep TonightLike almost everybody who’s 40 years of age or older, I’ve known my share of both failure and success. I can look back on my life and see areas where I’ve succeeded far beyond my expectations and areas where I’ve failed far beneath my hopes. But I’ve learned to be thankful for both success and failure. I’ve learned to see the kind hand of God in each of them.

How to get caught up when you fall behind in your reading
[image error]
I started my review of what I read in June and realized something: I hadn’t read very much at all in comparison to normal months. June was a pretty travel heavy month, and something I’m realizing more and more is that I don’t have a ton of time to read when I’m on the road (despite my best efforts). At least nothing super-long.1
I’ve got a growing pile of books that are sitting… waiting. They want me to read them. Some of them have deadlines attached, so I have to get them done (and will). S...

Anthony Kennedy’s ‘Sweet Mystery of Life’ and the Self’s Impossible DemandsJoe Carter:
The genius of America is the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In a misguided effort to expand liberty, Kennedy denied life to our most vulnerable citizens, and he thwarted the pursuit of happiness by saddling the self with impossible demands. He ruled on the nation’s highest Court at a time when conservatives and liberals have ceded unprecedented power to nine unelected, lifetime just...

Handling theological disagreement in a gospel-centered way
[image error]
This is a question I attempted to answer in a talk I gave for the Gospel at the Center webcast presented by The Gospel Project.
Three key points from the talk:
Because doctrine unites God’s people, our disagreements with one another must be marked by humility. Because doctrine divides us from unbelievers, our disagreements with them must be characterized by compassion Because doctrine delights God’s people, our disagreements with a desire for God to be glorified. One core idea:
The knowled...

Podcast: Brandon Smith joined us once again on The Hero of the Story to discuss Revelation, the gospel story, and the seven letters to seven churches. Check it out.
Awaiting The RevealAdam Kareus:
In many ways, we identify with what Mr. Miyagi did. A comparison can be made to the life of the Christian. We have been given tasks, we face trials, we go through life and are given ways which we are called to respond, but at the same time, God never explains what he is doing to us. Just think thr...

The road ahead for Reading Writers
[image error]
All right, so we’ve got some big news for y’all: Reading Writers is getting ready to wrap up its third season. The last 20-odd weeks of episodes have been among some of the best of the latest run, in no small part because of Dave Schroeder’s signing up as co-host.
Over the next little while, he and I are going to be recording the final episodes of the season, and then we’ll be taking a break as we get ready for season four, which may or may not include new theme music and a few other surpris...

When Obedience is ScaryChristy Britton:
A Wee Health UpdateHe began stirring our hearts for the spiritual and physical plight of the vulnerable. He sent us to Africa with 127 Worldwide, a mercy ministry of our local church, Imago Dei, in North Carolina, and exposed us to the global orphan crisis. No longer content with our indifference towards orphans, we prayed about how we would image our heavenly father’s heart for the fatherless.
If you’re not already praying for Tim, I’ve no doubt he’...

S3, Ep. 18: Movies + Books Revisited
[image error]
A few episodes ago, Dave and I had a discussion: What happens when great books (and not so great books) get turned into movies? Well, sometimes they turn into something amazing. Other times… well… You get The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
And then the feedback came in. Specifically from our friends Barnabas and Whit, both of whom have joined us on the show before, and soon we realized that we need to return to this topic and let the magic happen. Critiques, omissions, corrections, and a...
