What I read in August
Normally I like to share a breakdown of everything I read every month, including the books I abandoned. I do this because it gives me an opportunity to introduce you to books you might not have had an opportunity to read while practicing the art of writing concise book reviews.
Because I spent my entire summer off the blog, and then spent some more time more or less off of blogging to try to be a normal person, I am trying to catch up on sharing my reading. About a month ago, I shared what I...

New season, new beginnings
The future (and return?)
of Reading Writers
A little while ago, Dave Schroeder, my co-host on Reading Writers, and I were talking about what we wanted to do with the podcast going forward. We had a great first season together and really started to have some fun with it… But the fact is that along the way, we had a bit of mission creep.
See, originally, Reading Writers was meant to be a podcast where different authors and I would talk about their reading habits, as well as the books they’re re...

What I read in July
Every month, I like to share a breakdown of everything I read, including the books I abandoned. I do this because it gives me an opportunity to introduce you to books you might not have had an opportunity to read while practicing the art of writing concise book reviews.
Another couple of months have come and gone, and with them more reading! I’ll be covering August and September in future posts, but in July, I read and listened to 12 books. Some of this was because I finished a longer one, b...

S3, Ep. 20: The Ol’ Bait-and-Switch
A little while ago, Dave and I recorded a couple of special episodes of Reading Writers. They were, in fact, the final two episodes of season 3 of the show. But rather than doing this whole “releasing them on time” thing, I went and had a big project get in the way.
So, we’re releasing the second of these two episodes today. In this episode, Dave and I discuss the ol’ bait-and-switch: what happens when a book promises one thing but delivers something else?
I have a confession to make as we...

S3, Ep. 19: Reading in the Margins
A little while ago, Dave and I recorded a couple of special episodes of Reading Writers. They were, in fact, the final two episodes of season 3 of the show. But rather than doing this whole “releasing them on time” thing, I went and had a big project get in the way.
So, we’re releasing the first of these two episodes today. In this episode, Dave and I discuss something incredibly important, especially for folks living a busy lifestyle: how do you fit reading into the margins of life?
Altho...

An unexpected blogging break
[image error]
So, a bit of unexpected news:
I’m going to be taking a break from regular blogging until the beginning of September.
There are a couple of really good reasons for this:
First, we learned late last week that our family is moving apartments at the end of July (same complex, different building, one floor lower, long story). This is going to be a good thing for us longterm, but finding out we had to do this did turn our lives (and our apartment) upside down. This means we’ve got a lot of work to...

Don’t Skip The GenealogiesJeff Medders:
How to Affair-Proof Your PastorWho doesn’t love a lengthy list of difficult to pronounce names? I’m sure the genealogies sprinkled throughout the Old Testament are some of the most precious parts of the Bible to you. And I bet you’ve never passed over them in your Bible reading or in a sermon series.

First, let me get the obvious out of the way. Apologies for the “clickbait” title, but there’s no real sure-fire way to aff...

A glimpse inside the writer’s life
[image error]
Every so often, I like to give a glimpse into the life of a writer—or at least one specific writer (that being me). Every writer has a different process. Each of us approaches the work differently, from beginning to end. And often it changes from season to season in life. So here’s a quick look at what that looks like for me at the moment.
Come up with a good idea. Or at least an Idea I think is good. Noodle around with it a little. Throw it all away. Because I realize it wasn’t that good....July 7, 2018

Mister Rogers’s Deathbed ConfessionJared Wilson:
Steve Ditko (1927-2018)But what really impressed me was the one clear reference in the film to the implications of Christian morality. It comes in the second half of the movie when Rogers’s widow Joanne recounts a question he asked her when he was near death. He said:
“Am I a sheep?”
Best-known for co-creating Spider-Man with Stan Lee, Ditko was responsible for co-creating Dr. Strange, the Creeper, Blue Beetle, and many other characters.

What I read in June
[image error]
Another month has come and gone, and with it more reading! As you know, I am always consuming books, whether they’re physical, digital or audio. Every month, I like to share a breakdown of everything I read, including the books I abandoned. I do this because it gives me an opportunity to introduce you to books you might not have had an opportunity to read while practicing the art of writing concise book reviews.
In June, I didn’t finish a whole lot. Partly because I started an audiobook that...
