For the past 34 years, the Orpheum Theater in Memphis has been screening the classic 1939 film GONE WITH THE WIND annually. This tradition has now come to a sad, sad end because a few patrons complained that the film was "racially insensitive."
Read the news article HERE
What???
This is GONE WITH THE WIND, people! The highest grossing film of all-time! The film that so eloquently documents the extinction of Southern plantation culture and the civil war from the perspective of the Confederates. It is an invaluable part of not only American history but Hollywood's history! For example, Hattie McDaniel, who played Mammy, won best supporting actress for her role, which was the first time an Academy Award had been given to an African American. Historical!
Why am I whining about this? The book GONE WITH THE WIND by Margaret Mitchell (1936) is considered by many to be the greatest American novel ever written. It even won the Pulitzer Prize! Yet over the years it has been banned and censored more times than can be counted.
Many other books have been banned as well: Mark Twain's HUCKLEBERRY FINN, John Steinbeck's THE GRAPES OF WRATH, F. Scott Fitzgerald's THE GREAT GATSBY...and so many more it's ridiculous. More recently, books by Toni Morrison, J.K. Rowling and John Green have been banned.
The problem with books being banned or challenged is that it usually occurs because a small group of individuals, sometimes just one individual, finds a book offensive for whatever reason. Then these people try to remove that book from public consumption. In other words, they believe that their opinion of a book should dictate whether anyone else has access to that book at all. Sadly, such as in the case with the Orpheum Theater listening to a few loud complainers about GONE WITH THE WIND, these whining, controlling protestors succeed in bullying libraries and schools and stores from taking books off their shelves.
Watch Hattie McDaniel's acceptance speech above.
These people forget that we are in America, the land of the free. Authors are free to write what they want. The citizens of the United States are free to read and watch what they want. No one ought to have the power to control and limit the freedoms of another person.
To honor the great books that have been banned over the years, I am giving away a library of classics to one winner. The titles include:
GONE WITH THE WIND by Margaret Mitchell
HUCKLEBERRY FINN by Mark Twain
FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS by Ernest Hemingway
THE GREAT GATSBY by F. Scott Fitzgerald
THE SCARLETT LETTER by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Writing has always been a hobby and cathartic experience for me. Turning my passion into a fulfilling career as an Author has been one of my greatest dreams. I write because creating something that didn't exist before is as close to magic as I'll ever get. All you need is imagination.I’ve always been passionate about storytelling and impressed by the influence it has on people and the decisions they make in life. I love engaging with the projects I work on, diving headfirst into the research, investigation, and production of stories I feel are worth writing about. I am a curious and proactive Author, interested in preserving the foundations set by classical literature by adapting them to modern themes and trends.

A Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy author, Kharma Kelley has been enamored with all things that go "bump in the night" for who knows how long. She truly believes that finding humanity and beauty in some of the most seemingly unconventional places is part of the romantic psyche to her. A big fan of the Big Easy, Kharma tends to weave her proud Cajun heritage and values into her books. She enjoys reading other urban fantasy and romance novels and playing Minecraft in her spare time.
"Tall, Dark & Deadly" is the first book of her "Agents of The Bureau" series. Expect more sexy, dangerous and even hilarious installments to be released along with a new "ShadowShifter" series coming in 2017.
She frequents Wattpad (which she refers to as a story "incubator") often and beta tests her new story ideas there as well as provide guidance and critiques to aspiring authors.
Her works are often compared to Laurell K. Hamilton, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Gena Showalter, Kresley Cole and the late great author, L.A. Banks.
Quote from Kharma Kelley on writing Paranormal Romance:
"There's something intriguing about strong women finding love in all the "wrong" places in the world of fantasy. Of angels, demons, ghosts, werewolves and your occasional blood sucker, all these paranormal metaphors are catalysts of what humans are and crave most...that we're all different, beautiful and a little bit weird--and just want someone to love us for who we are."

Andy Walker, her cute but socially reclusive art class table mate, is her last resort. He may not be popular, but he’s funny, talented, and full of surprises. With a makeover and some major social marketing, Ivy is sure he could fetch a decent price at the auction. Andy reluctantly agrees to help, but the more time Ivy spends with him, the more her feelings shift from professional to romantic in nature. Or will she find a way to keep him for herself… Content Description: This is a stand-alone YA contemporary romance with companion novels set at the same high school. It contains minor language, innuendo, and crude humor, some steamy kissing, a party scene where underage drinking is taking place, and a brief but tasteful conversation about sex. NEW COVER REVEAL and FUNDRAISER - YOUR HELP IS NEEDED
Many of you are familiar with my young adult novel, PETALS, that released earlier this year. Unfortunately, as much as I loved the cover, it just didn't communicate the genre and emotion of the story inside. The solution was to give PETALS a facelift.
I’m thrilled to reveal the new cover for PETALS...TA DA!!!

To celebrate, I will be donating $1.00 from every book sold through the month of September to CASA DE SION,a charity in Guatemala that houses orphaned children and provides food, clothing, education, medical and dental care to local underprivileged families. An additional $1.00 will be donated for every review of PETALS posted to Amazon or Goodreads through the end of October.
My goal is to raise $200!!!
What can $200 do?
...feed a mother and child for six months
...buy shoes for 15+ children
...educate a child for 1/2 a year
...and more!

As many of you know, PETALS is set in Guatemala, the land of my husband’s birth. If you’ve already read the book, please consider ordering a copy for a friend or donating one to your high school or local library. EVERY DOLLAR COUNTS!
PETALS can be ordered on Amazon via this link:

Read an except from PETALS here: http://www.laurisawhitereyes.com/petals-info

If you would rather donate directly to CASA DE SION, you may do so on their website:

Summary:
Duty and prophecy get in the way of everything.
All I ever wanted to do was read my books, play my sports, and help people. Life and prophecy had other things in mind.Helping people is what I do; as an empath and semi-frequent telepath, I can easily sense and understand people's needs and emotions. Sometimes even before they do. Being able to read everyone’s thoughts and feelings all the time can drive me crazy with anxiety, but that moment when I can finally make someone’s life better makes everything worth it.
Unfortunately, I’m also the next in line to rule the galaxy, I’m the only diplomat most planets will listen to, assassins try to kill me on an annoyingly regular basis, and a much-vaunted Prophecy has decreed that I’m going to die. Oh, and someone blew up my home planet.Kind of a lot to deal with, right?
Too bad I just got another problem: a big, irritating, overbearing bodyguard with serious anger management issues.
And I think I’m falling for him.

EXCERPT:
“Great, Clee,” I said. “Job’s all yours. I’m going to bed.”Kenzi covered a snicker as Synie rolled her eyes. “Princess, you know the Yurilians will only talk to you.”I leaned back in my chair and stretched my neck. “Yeah, yeah.”Kenzi tilted his head at Synie. “Why will they only talk to the princess?”Synie shifted uncomfortably. “King Cepheus was….” She paused, searching for the right word.“A jerk,” Clee supplied unhelpfully.“Clee!” Synie barked. “That’s practically treason.”Clee shrugged. “Yep. But I already told him that to his face. He agreed with me.”Cepheus had a weak spot for Clee, as did we all; her tendency to tell the truth and lighten the mood at the same time was curiously refreshing. And she was right: Cepheus was a terrible diplomat. With another reproachful glare at Clee, who was no longer paying attention, Synie continued, “King Cepheus was less than sympathetic toward their grain dispute with us. Andromeda smoothed things over and managed to talk them down from outright war.”Kenzi’s eyes bugged. “They were going to declare war on us, just for some grain?”“Food is a common reason people go to war,” I said. “Or, rather, lack of it. When people starve, they feel they have nothing left to lose.” Perseus’s words came back to me: people who have nothing to lose, fear nothing. That was true on a global scale as well as a personal one, I supposed.Kenzi’s dark eyes turned to me and he gave me an awed smile. I really hated being an object of awe. I liked doing my job—a lot—and I loved helping people, but at heart, I was an introvert who wanted as little attention as possible. Just my luck, I got the most high-profile job in the galaxy.

BOOK REVIEW: NEVERWHERE by Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman
HarperCollins
Audio CD
Richard Mayhew is a young man with a good heart and an ordinary life, which is changed forever when he stops to help a girl he finds bleeding on a London sidewalk. His small act of kindness propels him into a world he never dreamed existed. There are people who fall through the cracks, and Richard has become one of them. And he must learn to survive in this city of shadows and darkness, monsters and saints, murderers and angels, if he is ever to return to the London that he knew.
MY REVIEW:
This classic Gaiman tale was first published in 1996 as a BBC television series and was later adapted into a novel by the author that same year. The audio recording, recorded by the author, was released in 2013.
I have to be honest here. I do love Neil Gaiman. Loved Coraline, The Graveyard Book, and The Ocean at the End of the Lane. I did not love Neverwhere.
It's not that Neverwhere wasn't "Gaiman-esque" enough. It was. Very clever, very creepy, and even nightmarish at times. There wasn't anything necessarily wrong with the book. But the genre, the general plot line, is such an overused one. Some unsuspecting "normal" human from the normal human world discovers a passageway into some "other" world. This human meets some not-so-normal characters and sets out on a quest to vanquish evil. And, of course, good always wins.
In this case, the protagonist, Richard Mayhew, is so completely ordinary, I never throughout the entire story came to like him. He was dull and uninteresting. The heroic deeds he eventually accomplishes are frequently accidental. He's sort of like Frodo Baggins in that way. Nothing special but he finds himself in an extraordinary situation with extraordinary friends. Richard's friends are all very interesting and heroic, and they are the reason I kept listening to the story.
I kept thinking about The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; The Wizard of Oz; Alice in Wonderland; and even Harry Potter, all books that follow this same basic plot idea and do it well. I just didn't think Neverwhere was unique enough to stand out. I know. How can I say that about the brilliant Neil Gaiman? He is brilliant, of course, and he is an amazingly great writer, which is why he gets away with Neverwhere.
Sorry. It just didn't live up to my exceptionally high expectations.
