"There is a ghost amongst us. Unnoticed at first, it was a shapeless mist, drifting, exhaling through the weaving crowds. In summer, when the city bustled, when the sun glared, it was almost invisible, nothing more than an imperceptible vapour. Only in winter, in the early morning, when particles of ice clung frozen to its form, was the ghost discernible, and it was upon one such morning that I saw it, slipping, sliding between the glut of people."
