“It was a song of aching hearts, of tears, of wistful longings and distant, idyllic memories, and it pulsated out, undulating against those white walls, echoing sadly in the desolate, lonely emptiness of the cathedral’s great hall.”

Another nice and gothic image. Paintings of skeletons, probably paintings older than this one from the medieval period were a big inspiration for Lilith’s Tears as well. The macabre, those stained glass windows and paintings of dancing, merry skeletons - life amongst death are very evocative. I wanted the novel to have a similar feel, dark, macabre, gothic but vivid - stark and unreal. The skeleton motif is on the cover because Torn towers over everything.

Lilith by John Maler Collier

Obviously (the title probably gives it away…) the Lilith mythology was a big inspiration for Lilith’s Tears, and effectively forms the entire history of the novel, and the back story of the island. The Lilith story and the mythology surrounding her is very very interesting and quite dark - it certainly fit the Gothic nature of my novel, but its worth looking into anyway, highly intriguing.

In my opinion, one of the best things humanity has captured on video. Done in 1979 by Voyager 1 as it approached Jupiter.
