New Release Endorsement with a message

My fellow readers,

It’s not lost on me that it’s Wednesday and not Tuesday and that I didn’t even share new releases on my own release week on the 6th of November.

You’ve come to expect these special new release endorsements every Tuesday and I have been letting you down.

I could tell you it’s because I’ve been daunted with deadlines, kids activities, and household chores. That may be part of the case, but there’s a bigger enemy at foot here.

That enemy is depression.

The anxiety of the holiday season, marketing and selling books, traditional deadlines, kids activities, and a weight loss journey has all started to come together and carried a dark cloud over me.

I haven’t slept as well, and spend most nights with earbuds in, listening to a book so I don’t wake anyone up. It’s my only solace in my crazy world around me.

This is what has made me remember the escape that books are. Writing and reading have always been my escape from reality and sometimes we treat them as a chore, looking at our giant TBR pile or all of our deadlines.

As I move forward into this crazy season, my fellow readers, I’m trying to read more. I’m taking that time, even if it’s a half an hour before bed, to read again. To calm down from the hecticness of my day and instead of lying in bed and worrying about everything, I’m going to escape into a book.

I’m almost done with my current audiobook, but luckily I have a full list here of new releases to go through. I urge you to do the same, my fellow readers. During these trying times we have to stick together. We have to #makereadinggreatagain

#MOMLIFEMONDAY

So I’m trying something new with blogging and going to TRY (you know when all of this Mom-ing and working stuff doesn’t get in the way) to have a new #Momlife post every Monday.

Today, we’re gonna talk Halloween since that’s TOMORROW. And how many of us may or may not have a costume for their kid?

Or maybe your kid picked out this awesome Moana costume but now it’s pouring and only twenty degrees outside but they’re crying to go out?

I asked some friends about this and they said “Oh, we didn’t have that experience in North Texas and usually we just put on leggings and a long sleeve shirt under their costume.”

Well, guess who has freeze warnings? Yup… That’s us…

Growing up in Illinois more than once I’ve had a “wear to school” costume and something that would resemble an eskimo to wear while freezing my toes off and trick or treating around the neighborhood. Luckily my mom had a lot of random excess clothes for me to layer on and somewhat call it a costume.

So now, mom’s, pour yourselves a glass of wine and pull up to your computer while I give you some ideas for last minute warm costumes that you don’t have to get Pinterest-ey for and if needed me you can use Amazon prime to have next day delivery or just make your kids rummage through the closet so you can finish your Pinot.

The Fortune Teller

One year I was supposed to be Jasmine from Alladin. Well it poured, so Mom wouldn’t let me go out in just my Jasmine costume and Jasmine looked stupid in my ugly green park (I SAID IT, MOM, I HATED THAT PARKA). So after a lot of tears, Mom and I compromised and she made me a last minute fortune teller.

Photo from Pixababy (cuz we know I was a chubby and definitely not working it that well as a fortune teller). My look was achieved with a large purple trench coat of my mother’s (it was the early 90’s), a head scarf, and a shit-ton of bracelets and necklaces.

And, HEY, if you don’t have a purple trench coat, but have Amazon Prime, they do have a two pack of purple poncos for $12 that can be re-used http://amzn.to/2gMVX9e

Cactus

A Pinterest photo gem. I’d probably be the lazy mom and just find head to Wal-Mart, pick up some of the small avery labels (a pack is like $5) and have the kid stick them all over a green sweatsuit (or the ugly green park their mom bought on sale and made them wear.)

You can get a pack of 1000 return address labels on Amazon for $ 8 http://amzn.to/2gLTk7u

Michael Phelps

OH WE ALL KNOW I WENT THERE.

Who could forget the infamous “Phelps face”? Certainly not me.

A hoodie, some headphones, if you’re feeling really craft a bunch of gold medals, and some goggles. Wallah!

The classic cat/mouse/ animal.

I think I’ve been this one more times than I can count. If you feel like leaving the house, the Dollar Tree has a set with black cat ears, a tail, and a bow tie. If you don’t feel like leaving the house, some black paper cut into triangles glued on a headband or attached to a hood work just as well. Grab some eyeliner for the nose and whiskers and you’re good to call it a night!

Old Person

This also works for kids 100 days of school. Also a great use of that ugly green parka, MOM.

Curlers or hair in a bun for an old lady little girl. Some pearls. Glasses. And if you’re really feeling really fancy, draw some wrinkle lines.

For the boys, you know you have an old free Bank truckers cap around, draw some wrinkle lines and he looks just like great uncle Al.

Bonus points for sensible shoes and fanny packs!

Well, you’ve got some choices, and if your kids don’t like it, tell them I guess all of their candy is going to be yours!

Weight Watchers Wednesday: NSV

NSV

The first time I saw that I assumed it was a variation of “Not safe for work”. Turns out it’s not. It means “Non-scale victory.”

What is a non-scale victory? A goal you’ve hit, even if you didn’t know you had it, with weight loss and getting healthy.

When I started Weight Watchers, as I said in my first post, it was a little bit about vanity but a big reason was my health. As a girl who has always had an average blood pressure of 90/70, even while pregnant, seeing it as 170 in April was an eye opener.

A month after I started WW, it went down to 150.

Now, in October, I went to the doctor and it’s finally down to a normal level of 124. Not only that my cholesterol and blood sugar are also in normal range!

What does this mean? And why do I go to the doctor so much?

Because of my abnormal numbers in April they did put me on different diet pills to help lose weight. Because of that I had to go to the doctor every month for weight checks even after going off the pills. This was my big six month check up since April and this was the appointment that would decide if I had to go on cholesterol medication.

AND I DON’T.

I am on Metformin for my Polycystic ovary syndrome and have been for ten years now, even with one ovary. It’s also supposed to help people with diabetes. This is something that the doctor and I will discuss when I meet with him next month.

Along with this post, I was going to post pictures of my old clothes I’ve been able to fit into and the happy tears I shed. But I also had to look at myself and how I feel.

Before I started back on Weight Watchers, I was really depressed. Anyone who was losing weight, I was pissed at. Like “Why not me? I’m not going to starve myself to look like them so I’ll just be fat and have my cake.”

I had so many people that gave me diet advice, people who honestly had no business giving it themselves, and that made me even more cranky.

So I’m not here to tell you about going down a pants size or what fits. My biggest non-scale victory is my health, which was my overall goal in this. Because of my family history, obesity, depression, and heart problems are something I have to keep a constant eye on. And being in my thirties, it’s harder and harder to take off this weight and keep it off.

I’m not fighting to be the skinniest or the girl with the best booty. I’m fighting to stay healthy so I can be around for my family and everyone I care about. That is the greatest non-scale victory of them all.

Any questions on my NSV?

What are yours?

Weight Watchers Wednesday: HOW?

The question I always get asked is HOW?

I have two young kids (6 and 4), I work from home with two jobs, my husband works in the city, I have a crazy puppy, and I’m involved with my kids school and sports.

So where does Weight Watchers fit into all of this?

I plan ahead

I have to. I actually even started tracking my dinners for the week in the app so I could look them up later and have the recipes handy. I also do Kroger Clicklist shopping, so I have all of the ingredients on my app, add those to my Kroger cart, and when I pick my youngest up from preschool, I swing on over and pick up my groceries. This way I’m not taking time out of my day when I should be working (or you know Facebooking) and wander around the grocery store, convincing myself I don’t need the Hershey bars on sale.

Then there lies the cooking thing…

I’m a big crockpot cooker. It’s my saving grace. My oldest gets on the bus at 6:25 AM (I know, RIGHT?) then my youngest doesn’t go to school until 9, so in between that time I started having her help me with the crockpot.

I have one of these nice programmable ones (That is actually on it’s last legs since I’ve had it almost ten years and I asked for  Packers one for Christmas) http://amzn.to/2gc8435

And I can’t forget about crockpot liners because honestly? I dont want to clean that thing either. I cook, when dinner is done, we put up leftovers, and throw away that bag. Wallah! I also order these in bulk, like literally 6-10 boxes at a time http://amzn.to/2zgb9U7

My recipes are ones I find on the Weight Watchers app by searching “slow cooker”. I dont make a new slow cooker meal every single night, because a lot of these, well they make a ton of leftovers.  But I do try to make a meal at least three-four times a week in the crockpot.

Want an example of one with my twists?

OKAY.

Slow Cooker Italian Chicken Sausage Stew (7 points and kid approved)

1 lb Yukon gold potatoes cut into bite size chunks (I bought red potatoes and sliced them in half then had my youngest put them in the crockpot)
2 cups store bought marinare sauce (Got a can of the Kroger brand and had my youngest dump it in)
9 oz chicken sausage, cut into bite size chunks (I bought the big link at Kroger for like $3, sliced it up and youngest dropped that in too)
shittake mushroom caps, 2 cups (I just got whatever the sliced white mushrooms were on sale and we dumped in the container)
Minced garlic, 1/2 tsp (Just scooped out 1/2 a tsp out of the jar)
3 tbsp fresh parsley or basil chopped (Yeah…I just got the freeze dried stuff http://amzn.to/2z0yWX8 )

Pour it all in the crockpot and set on low for six to 8 hours and each serving yields one cup. You can add in extra parsley or basil on top (0 points) or some shredded mozzarella (1/4 cup is 4 points).

So what do I do during the day? Get in my water? Excercise? Food?

Like  I said before, these make a lot of leftovers. So my lunch is either usually leftovers or I’ll take an Ole wrap with some lunch meat and cheese (The Ole wrap is only one point and yes we buy these in bulk as well for the nights I dont want to cook http://amzn.to/2yYzcGo). I’ll usually eat a wrap and then some smart pop to go with it (2 points a bag and you bet your butt we buy a ton of this http://amzn.to/2z0ee9R) And now that fruit is zero points, we eat a ton of pineapple so I always have that with some meal.

Then there comes in the water, and my sweet tooth.

Working at home, I have a lot of time where I can think about snacking or roaming the fridge.

It also gives me time to drink a ton of water. So I bought one of these not yeti, yet kind of a yeti, vacuum sealed tumblers in 40 oz (and monogrammed it because you know, vinyl business) http://amzn.to/2gdlnjw   and not only have my water but I add in some True Lemon (another thing we buy in bulk since I go through 3 of these a day in my 40 oz water cups http://amzn.to/2gv7bPR )

Believe it or not these do satisfy my sweet tooth and I get in a crud ton of water during the day!

So now you know…

If nothing else gets done during the day, at least I’ve made dinner and drank my water and that’s half the battle to keeping up with Weight Watchers.

Have any other questions? What else would you like to see me blog about with my Weight Watchers journey?

Weight Watchers Wednesday

This is my first time posting about this and after my before and after photo yesterday, I thought maybe I should go into a little bit more of an explanation.

ICYMI here’s the photo

I’m not going to start at the very beginning, but let’s go with April 2008 when I first joined Weight Watchers while in college. I lost fifty pounds rather quickly and really became obsessed with my weight. Of course that changed when I got married and then nine months after the honeymoon my little girl was born.

Add to that a second child, two cross country moves, big book deadlines, etc and I’d gained everything I lost plus another fifty pounds.

I’d tried a bunch of different diets and then in July of 2016, I found out my insurance covered a nutritionist, so I thought I’d try that. She told me about My Plate and had me track my calories on the My Fitness Pal app, and see her once a month. The scale literally did not budge and I would get so depressed I’d binge. Six months into it and about an entire four pounds lost, she suggested since I have polycistic ovary syndrome to try something similar to Keto.

Still didn’t lose weight and then I went to my doctor in April of 2017 who took blood work.

Mind you, I’ve always been a curvy girl, but I’ve been healthy. I’ve always had low pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol. Imagine my surprise when the doctor showed me my numbers and said they were all too high. I cried as my doctor and I discussed me needing to lose weight and put me on Belviq. I went back to my nutritionist, cried, and she gave me some tough love, telling me I needed to add in actual work outs.

So I started at a gym doing zumba and working out 3-5 a week along with Belviq. Weight loss still wasn’t happening so my next month appointment my doctor suggested phetermine.

I had awful side affects and tried working out, but could barely make it through a zumba class with them.

My husband got me a fitbit for my birthday and after another weigh in at the doctor that same day, she said “you’re doing okay, it’s just a slow process.” I cried, yet again, and asked about weight loss surgery. The doctor frowned and told me that I wasn’t a candidate since I’m anemic.

After drowning my sorrows in birthday dinner and Sonic, I thought I could still do it. I had diet pills and a fit bit, I was going to lose weight, right?

No. From August 1st-10th I actually gained weight and was so depressed, I bought a large can of Peach-A-Rita on the way home from a large mexican dinner. While the family and I watched lego batman, I drank that entire Peach-A-Rita and then ended up, drunk, logging onto my computer and joining Weight Watchers.

Yes, I lost weight with them in 2007, but I also tried joining again after my first child was born, second child, when we moved to Charlotte, etc. I ended up dropping out every time after a few weeks and not seeing results.

What was different this time?

This time, I really had no choice. It was this or by October I’d have to go on medication for high cholesterol, blood sugar, etc. My dad had a heart attack at 45 so this scared the crap out of me.

Weight Watchers had also changed a hell of a lot over the years. They now track using five different things to create food points (calories, fat, carbs, protein, sugar) and I can track these all on my phone, including tons of recipes.

My first meeting, I sat down with the leader and she told me “Look up your favorite drink at Starbucks”. When I first did WW, and even recently, I would get a skinny caramel macchiato. I looked up the tall size which used to be four points and my eyes widened when I saw it was now seven points!

How? 150 calories is seven points?

The leader grabbed this container of a drink called “premier protein” to compare. Both 150 calories.

Caramel macchiato (yup the skinny one) -150 calories, 1.5 fat, 27 carbs, 25 sugar, 8 protein

Premier protein – 160 calories, 3 fat, 5 carbs, 1 sugar, 30 protein.

I’d been looking at the calories for so long then trying to count a percentage of macros and failing. Weight Watchers broke it down into a really simple form for me.

I asked about working out. The leader told me we don’t even worry about that until week 4. Back in the day it used to be if you worked out, you would get more points to eat that day. Not the case anymore. Now you just have to get so many fit points a week from workouts, which equals me getting in my fitbit steps a day.

From joining in August to October I’ve lost 18 lbs and gone from a size 18 to a 14.

I’m not saying this to brag, I just want to share my journey and I’m going to continue to blog and update you all on this with info, including a new recipe to try.

New Release Endorsements 10-3-17

My fellow readers,

I was listening to the radio yesterday, on my way home from dropping my kids off at school.

It’s a Dallas country radio station and one of the things they said is they always hope when people listen in, in the morning they’re on their way to do something fun. That they get to give them a laugh or a smile that morning. But yesterday was a hard day, waking up to the news of a mass shooting at a country festival in Las Vegas.

Like the radio DJs, as an author, and an author for the readers, I don’t like to be the deliverer of the bad news. I like to keep things positive to work hard to #makereadinggreatagain

In the wake of this tragedy, we will all take our different paths in how we will react. Some will go to social media for political reasons or disgust. Some of us will sit back and wait for a phone call to know their loved ones will be okay. And some of us have problems digesting tragedy. Some of us will sit back, and escape into another world whether it’s a book or mindless reality TV.

It doesn’t mean these people care any less than the others who are more vocal. We all process things differently. To those who need that escapism, like I do, here are today’s new releases. May you find peace and comfort in this fictional reality in whatever you’re going through right now.

New Release Endorsements 9-26-17

My Fellow Readers,

Our book community is very different now.

As readers, we hold the power in our own eReaders to say what we want to read. There is not a librarian or a book seller constantly standing over us and judging our erotica books on the same shelf as our young adult books. And why should anyone judge us?

We are the pioneers of a movement. We, my fellow readers, are the sons and daughters of scholars and sailors alike. Those same people who fought, whether physically or verbally to give us the freedom of choice. The choice for us to choose what to read.

In that same token, my fellow readers, I know the struggles you’ve faced. Sometimes social media can be a very hazardous place. You feel beaten down, you feel broken. Yet you want to know what your fellow readers and authors are up to. For this I say that the book community needs to work together to #makereadinggreatagain .

Let’s go back to reading and commenting on blogs. Let’s share new releases and sales. Let’s post those reviews and share our joys and hardships over a new release.

Together, my fellow readers, I believe we can #makereadinggreat again starting with picking up these #newreleases and sharing them with the world, whether it be on your blog, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, etc. Let’s share together and make this book community great!
