How Writers Really Write — Writing Habits

Closing 2012, I asked various groups of writers what their best attributes and habits are, and what enables them to meet their goals.  Here’s what they said:

Cheering for good writing habits by erotica author, Fierce Dolanpersistence/stubbornness
creativity
making lists
support/writers groups
tracking goals
practicing manifestation techniques
enjoying writing
following a specific process

At core for most of the writers I talked with is the sense that we have to love what we’re doing, and we have to find the way we can most comfortably be persistent in that work.

What is your best strategy for writing? How do you make the progress you want, and create the results that keep you in writing?

Partner Swap

Party Favour

Featured in Partner Swap and the Kindle edition Belle du Nuit from Xcite Books, September 2011.

About Party Favour

Wushu Master Aja has no need for fear, though bringing herself close to submission is a delicious taunt–just to be near it, to see what it would be like if it was even possible. When she indulges her ideal fantasy as group bottom at her favorite scening engagement, can she handle total submission? Will she get more than she bargains for when she’s finally blindfolded and bound?

Cody knows what he craves despite that Aja’s unattainable. Sating his lust other ways, he resigns himself to guilty pleasures that change his perspective of sex and relationships forever.

Praise Of Partner Swap Sizzling Hot Book Reviews said, “Another story I enjoyed was “Party Favour.” This short story was about a woman who got to be the party favor for the night. This was one spicy and hot story as a woman gets to live out some of her fantasies by being the flavor of the night for all the guests.”

Raunchy Reader said, “My personal favourite was “Party Favour” because it’s so naughty and one of my fantasies…”

From Party Favour

Even though she was excited, Aja was amazed she was so calm. She didn’t really know any of the guests well, though conversation and mingling was hardly the point of Party. Every now and then she recognized someone from around town as being from Party. They would exchange a knowing look, then proceed on their way. As a martial arts expert Aja was used to having interesting nuances in her life, so this wasn’t really any different. Party was one, however, that she thoroughly enjoyed.

‘Well, Pet’ the Host responded, ‘I told you I had been watching you and thought you would make a wonderful treat for Party long ago. I didn’t know you were interested in Favouring until you came to me. But I must admit,’ he said, looking her over as she disrobed, ‘I think you will make this Party a smashing success.’

Aja smiled. In their few short conversations, she had come to like the Host quite a bit. She knew that he was honest and wouldn’t have chosen her to favour his party had he not held her ability in high esteem. Even though he had no street knowledge of Aja, she knew from Party that he was a flaming bottom, and seemed to understand her desire, her need for possession and submission.

Friday Flash – The Rickshaw Wallah

By Steve Evans from India and USA (Bangladesh Rickshaw) [CC-BY-2.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0)], via Wikimedia CommonsFrom a distance the wallah was a blur perched on the lower step of a stoop, with the strings of his paijama flying loose on the hot breeze.   Nearby, his rickshaw waited for the village to wake, as he savored rare solitude before a dusty, bustling day.  The market block stretched between them, but even in dawn’s half light, she could tell from the languid, rhythmic movement of his hand he enjoyed himself.

Before he spotted her she was upon him.  His head bent in shame, and she silently thrilled.   When tugging up the waistband and tightening the drawstring proved too complicated, his hands stilled and his mocha cheeks blossomed maroon. His dusky cock dipped almost to the step where his bare feet rested.

This close to him she saw he was not young, but young enough that his eyes remained downcast.

“No need to hide,” she whispered.

His head lowered further as his brown fingers swiped beads of sweat from his forehead.  He attempted to tug his kurta over his embarrassment, though his dark cock pressed confidently against the fabric.

“You speak English?” she asked.

A single nod was his response, so she continued.

“I bet you love a tight hole stretched around that…”

“No, ma’am,” he stammered. “I’ve never…”

She laughed aloud and knelt before him, resting her chin in her palms. The sheer silk of her skirt grazed his toe.

“Never,” she repeated, slowly inching up her hem.  He fidgeted, and his wide-eyed gaze flitted to her crotch, to her face, to the ground.  She leaned forward, and his cock bobbed just at her mouth.

Glancing about the sleeping, quiet street,  she darted her tongue at the tip, dabbled in his syrupy excitement.  His shoulders tensed and his hips flexed forward. Again, she laughed.

Slipping her skirt up her thighs, she knelt over him. Hot, balmy air greeted her bare labia.

He opened his mouth in shock until warm, golden droplets dribbled over his glistening tip. He breathed in sharply, and his mouth slacked into a dazed “O.”

“The blue house by the mango grove,” she said releasing her hem. “You’ll stop by.”

As she headed toward the slowly lighting grove, she glanced back.  His head lolled and his knees splayed wide, his cock slipping frenziedly between both hands.

The Threshold of Shifter Kink

“The Werewolf Delusion” by Ian Woodward [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons

Erotica, in general is the genre to write in right now. With the success of E.L. James’ best seller, Fifty Shades of Grey , it’s safe to assume the interest isn’t going to wane anytime soon. Regardless of what you think of the book, itself, its success opened vast possibilities in how we expand cultural ideas on what is kinky and that which pushes accepted boundaries.

In my earlier post, The Evolution of Kink, I talked about how our cultural perception of “kinky” has changed over the years. That’s one avenue of commentary, but I’d like to explore another, possibly more radical one: paranormal kink. Are we ready for the mind bending, and possibly morality shattering freedom of shifter kink? I wonder, because even when I attempt to search on the string “paranormal kink author,” Google serves me results based on “paranormal king arthur.” The string “shifter kink” goes nowhere. Dirty-minded paranormal prosaics–we’ve got work to do!

Paranormal kink isn’t a new genre. Gothic horror author Poppy Z. Brite began dabbling in it decades ago, and even Anne Rice danced near it. Most recently you’ll find Celia Kyle and Jay Lygon venturing there. Some of these focus on spectral sex, while others press further into shifter relationships. Still, even with these successes, there isn’t a lot of shapeshifter kink out there. Why?

It strikes me that most paranormal erotica still depicts unearthly or unnatural creatures through the filter of human characteristics. As an animist I understand that, because we can only perceive the world through our viewpoint. We’re human. We project our limited range of perception onto everything. However, as an animist writer, I challenge myself to go beyond the limitations of my own viewpoint. I want to read paranormal fiction that steps out of the human filter. I want to write–regardless of how challenging to my personal sensibilities it may be–the most vivid altered reality and form experiences that I can.

Am I the only one tired of Twilight-esque shapeshifters being overall well-mannered, pretty, and neatly groomed even in their animalistic altered forms?  Am I the only one who thinks that despite that it may be sexy, human/shifter sex may not be all that tidy or perfectly ahem accommodating?

Do we stray from shifter kink because somehow inviting the elements of beast and human into the same arena–let alone body–crosses too many boundaries, even if only in fantasy? Perhaps it’s due to a drive to preserve human space and psychology as separate and better than other species.  Maybe it’s because wanting to read about primal animal urges pitted against lesser cunning human characters makes us bad people?  Moreover, maybe it’s just too close to  bestiality, and we’re afraid that through fantasy we are somehow condoning socially unspeakable acts.

You tell me.  What’s taboo, and what’s kink? How do you distinguish the two? What possibilities does the paranormal genre leave shifter kink open to, that general kink erotica can’t offer?

Candy Cane Kink Giveaway Hop – The Evolution of Kink

Candy Kane Kink

What is kink? We’ve all heard the term, and maybe we’ve indulged, but what is it, really? According to Dictionary.com, kink, /n/, “is a twist or curl, as in a thread, rope, wire, or hair, caused by its doubling or bending upon itself.” Metaphorically I supposes that’s valid in our context.

Back in the day, by which I mean the late 80s, before the Internet became the biggest avenue through which to market sex, I observed kink defined more generally, as a sexual experience beyond a framework one would generally consider appealing or arousing. Now, though, that’s all quite changed.

Wikipedia defines kink as ” a range of practices: spanking, tickling, bondage, dominance and submission, sadomasochism (BDSM), cuckoldry and sexual fetishism.” I find it intresting that not too long ago, anal sex and golden showers were deviant behaviours. Now, not are they the pr0n of the new garde, they are pretty commonplace.  As porntrepeneur John Stagliano put it back in 2001 in his industry-shifting interview, “Pussies are bullshit.” Stagliano went on to express how just watching women have sex no longer carried the industry. Purveyors wanted their kink more dark, and in many cases, more violent.

I don’t think kink has to be dark or violent, but I do think it’s about expression of the shadow, the hidden desires.  A friend calls it “speaking to the monster.”  To me the point of kink is you can’t prescribe what it is one person to the next, or how folks will respond to stimulation by… anything.

What does ‘kink’ mean to you?  How has it changed from your vantage point of erotica and the hidden?

If you like your shadows dark and shiftery, and your kink hardcore and pushing boundaries, learn more about Book One of The Scattered Dark Series, Journal of a Lycanthrophile, my new paranormal gay kink release from Fierce Desires, on the series Facebook page.

Can I just say I’m not a huge fan of winter? I’m just not. I don’t like wearing big, bulky clothing, being cold, or did I say being cold? There is one part of the cold holidays that I do enjoy, and that’s hibernating in my amazing cave!

I guess we don’t really get to hibernate as Nature intended, in our frantic cultural approach to festivities. Insomuch as we tend to stay home more, eat yummy comfort foods, and huddle around the fireplace drinking hot cocoa… That I can dig.

And really, that’s what the cold season is about for me. Time together, enjoying good things, snuggling under blankets.

Friend me on Facebook (if you haven’t already) and post your Facebook link in a comment here, to be entered to win a copy of Traveler Through Darkness, my gay interracial erotic short story in Decadent Publishing’s The Edge series. Must be 18 or older to win.
