When archaeologist Virginia Jones uncovers a priceless Anglo-Saxon artifact, she expects to attract academic interest — not a dragon! Trapped in a burning building by the beast, there’s only one thing she can think to do…
Firefighter Dai Drake can handle dragonfire — because he’s a dragon shifter himself. But when he rescues Virginia, her touch ignites an inferno of desire even he can’t fight. She’s his one true mate… but how can he tell her what he is when she’s convinced all dragons are bloodthirsty monsters after her gold?
As Dai fights to protect Virginia, they’re both at risk of getting burned. Can he show her that the only treasure he wants is her heart? Or will his secret make their growing love go up in smoke?

Midnight Texas, who is watching?
WARNING: THERE MAY BE SMALL SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED YET.
The kids and I have started watching Midnight Texas. Although the IMBD page lists the “creator” as Monica Breen… all of us readers know it was really created by author Charlaine Harris. (Yeah, that isn’t annoying at all… And Harris is only mentioned under “Trivia,” but I digress…)
The book series is billed as a mystery, and the show certainly has a mystery element, but it is really about the town and the inhabitants and their struggle to survive in a world that is far from accepting of them. The first show starts with the main character, Manfred Bernardo, a psychic, on the run from someone named Hightower and looking for a place to hide. His dead grandmother suggests Midnight, Texas. Yeah, Manfred sees dead people.
This ability plays big in the first episode and for the record he sees people as they died. So, if you are a believer in Harris’ mythology here, plan to die pretty. The people Manfred sees have missing parts and bloated parts and foul-looking water bubbling out of their mouths.
In addition to a psychic, Midnight boasts a vampire, a bounty-hunter, a witch, an angel or two, and at least one shapeshifter. I won’t go into anymore detail than that as roles are defined and revealed as the shows go on.
For the most part, the kids (15 year old boy and 18 year old girl) and I are enjoying the show. We are all big paranormal fans of one type…not always the same type, but Midnight hits the intersection of our Venn Diagrams enough, and it is nice to have something we can watch together.
There are definitely some hokey parts and none of us are a fan of the vampire. We also have issues with the shapeshifter who was revealed in the second episode. Let’s just say the animal he shifts into isn’t what any of us would pick for a middle-aged white guy who dresses like some old West villain. Or maybe to be more accurate, for the animal he shifts into, we would have liked to have seen a bit of ethnic diversity… But the witch is pretty good and the idea of the town fun. Overall, we are liking it and will continue to watch. How about you?

Recipe: Pork Chop Sandwich
There’s a restaurant in Butte, Montana called Pork Chop John’s. If you are ever there, I highly recommend stopping by. The “meat” of the sandwich is a breaded and fried slice of pork tenderloin. It’s served on a hamburger roll with traditional hamburger fixings… and it is delicious… and I don’t really like most pork. I definitely don’t like most pork chops.
Well, I am a long way from Butte now, but I was able to put together my own version of the “John.”
1 egg
1/2 cup milk (I use whole)
Saltine crackers (Start with a sleeve)
Salt
Pepper
Paprika (or other spice of your choice)
Boneless thin cut pork chops
Canola oil
(Also, 2 shallow pork-chop sized bowls, cutting board, a meat mallet, a big fry pan, paper towels and a plate/platter)
What you do:
Lightly mix the egg in milk in a shallow bowl that is wide/long enough to get the pork chop in easily. Set aside.
Crush the crackers to crumbs and put in a second bowl (same type as egg mix bowl).
Place the pork chops one at a time on the cutting board and pound them on both sides with the mallet. You want to be able to see the indentations from the mallet, but no holes! Keep that aggression under control.
Salt and pepper both sides to taste.
Put paprika (or spice of your choice) to taste in with cracker crumbs and mix up.
Heat your oil in your fry pan until something dropped in sizzles. Then keep the heat at about medium to medium high. You want them to have time to cook the meat without burning the coating.
Coat each pork chop in the egg/milk mixture followed by the cracker crumbs and then fry! I use an instant read thermometer to get the meat to 145 degrees Fahrenheit.
Serve on your favorite bread/roll with mayo, lettuce, tomato… whatever you enjoy most.
(Note: the egg/milk mixture is enough to do probably 6 pork chops. You might need more than one sleeve of crackers for this.)

Fenrir and Garm, Wolves of Norse Myth
If you’ve read any of my Nine Worlds (previously called Unbound) series, you know I love to take myth and tweak it a bit. One way I did this was by taking one particular wolf in Norse Mythology and making it an entire type of shapeshifter instead.
In Norse Mythology, Garm is a giant wolf, or the “greatest of dogs” in the eddic poem Grimsnisal. He makes his most dramatic appearance in the gods’ end of the world, Ragnarok, where he is left tied up and howling. Snorri Sturlson pits him against the god Tyr in the great battle.
Mythology being what it is, Garm, Hel’s hound (as in Loki’s daughter Hel), and Fenrir all get a bit mixed up at times depending on whose version of the stories you read. This, of course, totally justifies my reasoning to use “Garm” as the name of my wolf shapeshifter guardians in the Nine World. (I wrote that last sentence with my tongue firmly in my cheek… )
Fenrir, however, is a lot better defined in Norse myth and thus kept his identity in my books.
Fenrir appears in a couple of well drawn Norse stories. He, like Hel and Jormungand, is Loki’s offspring.

Fenrir bound by Gleipnir.
One story, the story of his binding, is very disturbing to me, but then so many things the gods did were disturbing. After writing my version of Fenrir for Guardian’s Keep though, I found I couldn’t listen to the binding story in Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology. I had to fast forward through it. Silly, maybe, but it honestly got to me. Anyway, in it the gods are all up in arms because Fenrir is getting to be such a big boy. Rather than try to work with him, they get the dwarves to make a magical chain named Gleipnir with which to bind him. Fenrir was no one’s fool though and asked for a god to place his hand in his mouth to gain his trust. Tyr complied. Gleipnir was put around the wolf and the dwarves’ fetter held. The gods were thrilled, Fenrir was outraged, and Tyr lost a hand. Then to add injury to insult, the gods shoved a sword through Fenrir’s jaws (upright). He stayed in this position until Ragnarok when he will be freed and get a little revenge of his own by snacking on one little god name Odin…
I really have to say I still root for Fenrir and if eating Odin didn’t cause the end of the world, I’d probably be all for it. (And to be fair, it isn’t the REAL end. Just the end to that time… a new beginning really… so… )
There are, for the record, two other wolves who at least have ties to Fenrir. Skoll and Haiti have the task of eating the sun and the moon during Ragnarok. The Lokasenna and Völuspá both have stanzas that indicate Fenrir is the father of these wolves. Maybe Aesa did make it back into that cave with Fenrir in Guardian’s Keep…
