Murder Passes The Buck by Deb Baker
When her neighbor is shot and killed, sixty-six-year-old widow Gertie Johnson seizes the opportunity to move on with her life by investigating his death. Gertie is abetted (and hindered) by her grandson Little Donny, man-hungry best friend Cora Mae, and word-of-the-day challenger, Kitty. It doesn’t help that the death has been ruled an accident by the sheriff of this backwoods community in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Or that Sheriff Blaze Johnson happens to be Gertie’s son. Whether it’s interrogating neighbors, spying, or impersonating the FBI—not to mention staying one step ahead of Blaze—Gertie will do whatever it takes to solve the case, even when the killer takes aim at her.
Murder On The Mind By L. L. Bartlett
After insurance investigator Jeff Resnick is viciously mugged, he discovers the resulting brain injury has left him able to sense people’s secrets. When his estranged half-brother, Richard, takes Jeff to the family home to recover, Jeff’s senses pick up clues to the recent vicious murder of a local banker. Despite Jeff’s mixed feelings about his new sixth sense, he feels compelled to explore the banker’s murder–using both his senses and his investigative skills, along with Richard’s reluctant help. Against the gritty setting of wintry Buffalo, NY, and a tormented family history of his own, unraveling the truth threatens Jeff’s–and Richard’s–life.
Loose Screw by Rae Davies
Lucy Mathews, crime reporter turned antiques dealer, avoids confrontation like a home perm. She even lets a cat shove her around.
When Lucy trips over the body of a buckskin-clad relics trader, her ex-boss asks her to cover the story. She tries to tell him no, but old habits die hard and soon she finds herself directly in the path of a killer and the exasperating, if attractive, detective in charge.
Can Lucy catch a killer or is this the last confrontation for her—period?
Still Life With Murder by P.B. Ryan
Book #1 of P.B. Ryan’s bestselling historical mystery series featuring Boston governess Nell Sweeney and opium-smoking former battle surgeon Will Hewitt. Long thought to have died during the Civil War, Will is arrested for murder, and it’s up to Nell to prove his innocence.
“P.B. Ryan makes a stunning debut with Still Life With Murder, bringing Nineteenth Century Boston alive, from its teeming slums to the mansions on Boston Common, and populating it with a vivid and memorable cast of characters. The fascinating heroine, Nell Sweeney, immediately engages the reader and I couldn’t put the book down until I discovered the truth along with her. I can’t wait for the next installment.” —Bestselling author Victoria Thompson

New To You: Trail of Dead by Melissa F. Olson (Prize)
Trail of Dead, an urban fantasy, by Melissa F. Olson .
What is Trail of Dead about?
Trail of Dead is the sequel to Dead Spots. Both novels feature Scarlett Bernard, a young woman in Los Angeles with the ability to “null” supernatural powers. If a vampire or werewolf gets too close to her, they become human again. Witches can’t perform even the mildest charm. Scarlett makes a living cleaning up the crime scenes that are left when supernatural forces go haywire in the city, so she finds herself in some sticky situations. Trail of Dead follows Scarlett as she tracks her old mentor, now a vampire murdering witches in the city.
What type of reader would your book appeal to most?
Fans of urban fantasy, paranormal romance, science fiction (magic in Scarlett’s world is heavily tied to evolutionary principles), women’s fiction, etc.
Who is the main character? What does he or she want or what is his or her biggest struggle to over come?
Scarlett is trying to track down her former mentor, a woman who killed Scarlett’s parents so she could worm her way into the null’s life. She is also trying to deal with the guilt she feels over her parents’ death, and resolve her feelings for two very different men.
What movies or other books would you compare Trail of Dead to and why?
If I were organizing a book store, I would shelve this with Patricia Brigg’s Mercy Thompson series, Carrie Vaughn’s Kitty Norville series, and perhaps Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse novels. I think all of those series share a similar taste for action and intricate worldbuilding, with some romance and humor thrown in. I’ve tried to do that with my books as well.
What plot line drives the story?
The hunt for Scarlett’s mentor, Olivia, and the attempt to figure out what she’s up to. Olivia is working with an accomplice who seems to have her own agenda and plan for Scarlett.
How is your book different than other books in the same genre?
Scarlett’s power is unusual, because in a sense she doesn’t have any. Scarlett is the absence of power. It’s like there is a sphere around her, and within that aura all magic ceases to exist. This greatly affects the supernatural characters in her life. Scarlett is a tough, strong female character, but she’s also dealing with a lot of guilt and confusion because of what Olivia has done to her.
Does your book have romance in it? If so how important is it to the story?
It does have a love triangle, continued over from Dead Spots. The love triangle is a subplot in this novel, rather than the main storyline, but it will be recurring in the series.
Is Trail of Dead part of a series? If so what are the other books (in order) in the series and will there be more?
Yes: Dead Spots is the first, Trail of Dead is the second. The series will continue with a third book, and hopefully more.
If your book is part of a series, should readers read the books in order?
That would be ideal, especially because Trail of Dead’s story really picks up where Dead Spots leaves off. But readers who choose to start with the sequel shouldn’t have any trouble picking up the storylines or characters. The series follows the main character, Scarlett Bernard, as she finds her place in both the supernatural world and the regular one. There will be an overarcing plotline throughout the series, but it’s very important to me that each novel stand on its own as well.

New to You: Rush, a young adult novel by Eve Silver
Rush by Eve Silver, a young adult novel debuting this month! (Answers provided by the author. Thanks, Eve, for participating!)
What is Rush about?
Sixteen-year-old Miki Jones’s carefully controlled life spirals into chaos after she’s run down in the street, left broken and bloody. She wakes up fully healed in a place called the lobby—pulled from her life, pulled through time and space into some kind of game in which she and a team of other teens are sent on missions to eliminate the Drau, terrifying and beautiful alien creatures. There are no practice runs, no training, and no way out. Miki has only the guidance of secretive but maddeningly attractive team leader Jackson Tate, who says that the game is more than that, and that what Miki and her new teammates do now determines their survival and the survival of every other person on this planet. She laughs. He doesn’t. And then the game takes a deadly and terrifying turn.
What type of reader will love Rush?
Fans of young adult books, teens, sci-fi readers, fans of alien books and gamers.
Who is the main character? What does he or she want or what is his or her biggest struggle to over come?
Miki Jones just wants to figure out how to find her new normal after the death of her mother. But her life’s anything but normal when she’s sucked into a game where she has to hunt aliens or be hunted by them—all the while balancing the life or death struggle with her regular high-school life. “So what’s the game now? This or the life I used to know?”
What movies or other books would you compare Rush to and why?
For books, I’d say Ender’s Game because of the gaming elements and the way the main character is left in the dark by those who are in the know and must struggle for answers even as they struggle to survive. Divergent and Hunger Games for the action (though the plot is in no way similar). The graphic novel Fray: Future Slayer. And a couple of my adult sci-fi books that were originally released under the name Eve Kenin (and are now available as Eve Silver): Driven, Hidden because they were high action with a thread of romance and I loved writing them so much I wanted to create a YA book with a similar vibe. I’d also add some video game inspiration to the mix: Mass Effect, Halo, Call of Duty, Bioshock.
What plot line drives the story?
Action. Adventure. Sci-fi. Some mystery because the main protagonist has no clue what’s going on and the reader discovers the clues right along with her. A thread of romance.
How is Rush different than other books in the same genre?
While this book is sci-fi, it isn’t post-apocalyptic or dystopian. It is set in the contemporary world at a regular high school as well as various gaming settings. Also, this book does not involve an overt alien invasion of the planet. The alien encroachment is subtle. Most people have no idea they’re coming. But they’re out there, just a breath away.
Does your book have romance in it? If so how important is it to the story?
Yes the book has some romance, but no love triangle. The romance is important to the story but not the sole element, and it is not the driving force of the book. It’s an action/adventure/hero’s journey book at heart.
Is Rush part of a series? If so what are the other books (in order) in the series and will there be more?
Yes. RUSH is the first book in The Game series. The second book, PUSH, will be out n June 2014, and the third book, CRASH, in June 2015.
If your book is part of a series, should readers read the books in order?
Ideally, readers should read the series in order for the full impact of Miki’s wild ride as she discovers exactly what the game is about. But a reader who picks up book 2 first won’t be completely lost. I just feel it won’t be as much fun for them.
If your book is part of a series, what makes it a series?
The series has the same protagonists throughout. Also, each book takes the reader deeper into the game and peels away layers of information to reveal new clues as to what the game is all about.

The Witch Thief Wins Romantic Times Reviewer Choice Award!
My excitement for the weekend was going to the Romantic Times Convention and receiving this fabulous award for The Witch Thief! Romantic Times has given a number of my books Top Picks over the years, but this was my first major contest win. Look, it’s real!
This year the RT Convention was in Kansas City which gave me the opportunity to see my cousin who lives there. It also gave me the chance to meet up with writing friends and spend time with my daughter who has fallen in love with RT’s Teen Day. Last year she discovered Kelley Armstrong and is now a major fan. Never mind that her mother had been a fan of Kelley’s since the beginning and had told said daughter that she should check out her books…
Our trip was quick. In on Friday, just in time to dash to the awards ceremony, under-dressed I’m sure, and then out early Sunday morning. But it was still a great time.
Next year the convention is in New Orleans. Any of you going? Any of you go this year? I’m really weighing if I should go and if I do, if I should just do the Teen Day again or go all out and attend as an author…
Big decisions.
FYI, if you haven’t been in a few years, the convention has changed, in my opinion for the better. The sexy is still there… check out the room keys Jaci Burton sponsored… but it isn’t in your face. I felt completely comfortable walking the halls with my daughter. And at the book signing too. In fact, they separate young adult authors in their own section. You can walk freely to the other areas, but it is nice to have them all in one block.
There also seems to be a lot of support for self-published authors too. They have two book signings: one for indies and one for traditionally published. I didn’t get in in time to go the indie signing, but from what I heard it was just as big as the traditional one. They also had Reviewer’s Choice Awards for indie books.
It’s a new world and it looks like RT is along for the ride. :)
If you haven’t read The Witch Thief and would like to, I think the print copies are gone, but it is still available as an ebook and an audio book. Find links here. Be aware that it is book 6 in my Unbound series and I highly recommend that you start with an earlier book, preferably at the beginning with Unbound, although starting with Dark Crusade would work too. (My personal favorites in the series are Unbound, Guardian’s Keep and Wild Hunt.)
Rogue, Lost 4
Rogue Werewolf Paranormal Romance 4th in Lost Series Price: $0.99
Deserted by the pack when she was a child, rogue, Kacie Marks is used to defending herself, and she’s happy to keep doing so, even when vampires invade her woods. However, rogue hunter, Bryce Kinkaid has other plans for her, plans that involve using Kacie as bait for the vampires intent on destroying every werewolf they can find.
Kacie evades both vampires and Bryce at first, but the rogue hunter isn’t one to give up. Especially after he gets close enough to Kacie to realize she means much more to his wolf than just bait in his vampire trap.
Rogue is the fourth short story in the Lost series of vampire and werewolf romances. If in print, it would be about 65 pages long.

Loosey Goosey, Dusty Deals Mystery 3

Book 3 in the Dusty Deals Mystery Series
Book Three: Loosey Goosey
You can choose your friends, but you can’t choose your family. You can though move two thousand miles away and hope they don’t come to visit. Unfortunately, for Lucy Mathews that only works for so long.
Lucy has a perfect week planned. The kind of week that includes a romantic dinner with her cowboy detective boyfriend, big dollar sales to the visiting Beef Ranchers Association and their wives, and maybe a relaxing holiday weekend at home with her Alaskan malamute, Kiska.
What she doesn’t have planned is a visit from her animal activist brother, his pet goose, Pauline, and his neon yellow van.
Lucy’s plans quickly go to the birds. First, her date is interrupted by brother and goose. Second she discovers a dead body, under her brother’s van. Then, when her brother gets arrested for the murder, the worst thing imaginable happens, Lucy’s mother finds out.
Not only is Lucy is left in charge of babysitting the recalcitrant goose, but her mother is threatening to come to Montana herself to solve the murder. Lucy has no choice but to dive into the investigation, and find the real murderer before her brother is put away for good.
