I get it, but...
I don't think the Slate headline writer thought this through: "Federal Officials Unveil New Strategy to Combat Child Sex Crimes."

Operation World Peace
President Obama says the Iraq mission's name will change from Operation Iraqi Freedom to Operation New Dawn. When did military operations come to have these smarmy political names? They used to have wonderful odd names, code names I guess, apparently chosen at random or from a prepared list. Operation Squirrel, Operation Envelope, Operation Sea Monster. (I just made those up because I can't remember any real ones.)

LaD
I am here initiating a post about LaD (Life after Death, as of course you know) and related matters to which all comments, thoughts, queries, rants, desperate longings, hopes, descriptions of the afterlife, certain knowledge, messages from the beyond, doubts, denunciations, etc., can be posted. Threads dangling from other topics that Somehow migrate toward these topics elsewhere in this journal will be deleted. I of course will follow the posts here with interest, and may contribute, seeing a...

Easiest grammar whiz ever
See, now I hold out no hopes of fooling anybody. Add words to either or both ends, no adding punctuation within the quote.

Claude Mirande
Claude Mirande is a great favorite of mine though he seems hard to find. At one time there was a website (mirande-factory.com) where you could see many images, and I downloaded as many as I could. I first noticed him when I was in France at a festival -- an image of his Tintin-like girl detective on a postcard for a gallery (Gallerie Collin).I can't find that he's done any books or albums of prints. I'm pasting here the original of that image, which I found somewhere. The few sites where...

The Lovely Subjunctive
A strange incident on Amtrak that involved a blogger, an arrest for taking pictures of an Amtrak train (the picture-taker planned to enter his picture in an AMtrak contest), and a "five figure" settlement: www.nytimes.com/2010/07/28/nyregion/28about.html
Amtrak spokespersonage had this to say in wrapping up:
“Our policy has been and continues to be that ‘Amtrak does not comment on civil case settlements,’ ”Clifford Cole, an Amtrak spokesman, said in an e-mail message. “We would not have any m...

A Lovely Chance to Get Money
I have been getting email after email from the following:
www.newenglandbookfestival.com/
Following this link you can see the books that won last year. You may be forgiven for not recognizing more than one. It's that kind of festival. I have received the same notices from the London, New York, and Los Angeles Book Festivals. a note appended to the London one says this:
"The London Book Festival is produced by JM Northern Media LLC, producers of the Hollywood Book Festival, New York Book Fe...

Help question
Can anyone attending here recommend to me a book or books (or website even) about the belief systems, cosmology. etc. of the eastern North American Indians, particularly the collective group now called the Haudensaunee (formerly the Iroquois COnfederacy and similar). I have a book on th mound-builder Cahokia world, but I'm looking for something more northern/coastal/Appalachian.

Far-flung me
I think I may have noted before my Petaluma activities as a wealthy restaurateur, but only did it occur to me what a great name this would be for my (our) blog.
